The SUV bounced down the dark road as I stared out hte window, frowning at the forest around us. I sat in the back, my backpack sitting forgotten on my lap as I contemplated what had gotten me to this point.
Just last month I'd been at work waiting tables when my mom called. I shrugged it off at first, firguring she just needed me to pick something up on my way home. But then my mom kept calling. So I finally answered.
"What's so important that-"
"Run," my mom said, sounding scared and frantic. "Run and don't stop. You know what to do," she said before hanging up.
Shit, I thought, wiping my now sweaty palms on my faded and torn jeans. I walked quickly to the front, looking around for my boss.
"I quit," I said, handing my apron to him before heading out the door. He called out to me, but I didn't have time to waste. I jumped in my beige Honda Civic and pulled out of the parking lot at top speed.
I knew that meant that my father had tracked me down again. For the last 5 years we'd been on the run, never settling anywhere for long, moving every few months. I ended up finishing high school online a year early.
I drove through the night, only stopping for gas and a bathroom break. As dawn approached, I pulled over and and parked in a rest area right over the Oklahoma Texas border. I didn't know what they would do with me- I knew that it was me that they were really after. I leaned my seat back so I could rest a few hours beofre hitting the road and heading on to Arrowhead, Oklahoma.
The nightmares started as soon as I fell asleep. I was back in our home in Charlotte. I hadn't been feeling well that day and had woke from a nap with a high fever. My mom had been worried as nothing seemed to help - no medicine, not even an ice bath. I had felt a strong desire to go outside and had fought with my mom about it. Finally, she gave in and led me onto the back porch. I walked out into the yard and laid on the cool grass, staring up at the sky.
I was suddenly wracked with pain so intense it took my breath away and I was barely able to even whimper. My mom ran out to me and held me, crying, unsure of what was going on. My bones began to crack and I felt like she was dying. My mom pulled away as my body began to grow and rearrange until a beautiful silver and red wolf lay there.
I was confused and relieved and exhausted all at the same time. I sat up and looked at myself, noting I wasn't much bigger than the wolves I'd seen at the zoo, but my fur was long and practically glowed in the moonlight. I wobbled on shaky legs at first, unsure of myself in my new form. I moved towards my mom slowly and licked the tears from her check before running off towards the woods behind our house. I had spent that night running the same paths in the woods that I usually did, just this time on 4 feet instead of 2. The sight and smells and tastes of things so very different and yet so familiar.
Finally as dawn set in, i had made my way back to my house and found my mom asleep on a chair on the back porch. I shifted back and quietly crept inside, not wanting to wake my mom. I managed to put on my pajamas before passing out on my bed.
My mom shook me awake what felt like only minutes after I had fallen asleep.
"Azalea. Wake up now! We have to go. Wake up!"
I blinked sleepily at my mom, trying to get my bearings. "What's going on? What time is it?"
"You've been asleep since yesterday, but we have to go now. We have to hurry before your father gets here," my mom replied, rushing around my room, throwing things into boxes.
I had been still half asleep, but sat up putting my feet on the ground. My mom tossed some clothes at me before stating, "You've got 5 minutes before we go," and then left the room.
I got dressed quickly, noticing that my room was almost empty, all of my favorite things now gone.
"Mom, what the -" I started, walking into the living room. My mom cut me off.
"I'll explain on the way. Let's go." I helped my mom load the last few boxes in the car and then we were off.
Once we hit the highway, my mom started talking. She told me that when I had changed and ran, she had called my father and asked if he knew what was going on. She had been worried about me and didn't know who else to turn to. At first my father didn't believe her, but when she explained how horrible it was to watch me shift and the sound of my bones breaking, his tone turned serious. He told her that he was coming to take his daughter home with him, that I would only be safe with him now.
My mom knew that I would never accept that, but she would give me a choice. We had met his wife once and that was more than enough. We had left them both behind 3 years ago. She said it sounded like he lived with some sort of cult and that if that's what I wanted she would take her there. I agreed with her - I had felt the hatred rolling off of my step mother the one and only time we had met. I had been close to my dad until then - but he made the decision to push us away. I would not be going with him now nor ever.
And so we ran. Moving cities every few months. My mom explained that my dad had a lot of reach and money and kept sending people after us.
Abel's POV The bitch I had moaning underneath me was doing little to subdue the urges I had burning inside me. I could barely get off with Kamilla anymore. I was truly getting bored with her. She was annoying, only cared about money, and kept on telling me how much she loved me. Honestly, I can't stand her, but I needed a Luna back then, and since she was banished along with me. I had originally felt some guilt, like that meant that I needed to take care of her, but I was so tired of her lately that I fantasized about killing her. The Alpha Summit had been the perfect opportunity for an ambush. I took a handful of warriors with me, told King Ivan of my plans and even rigged explosions in the primary locations. It was a flawless plan, the Alphas should've been dealt with in one go. It wasn't expected that most of them would be gathered outside, and everything after that went to shit in a hurry. "Abel! Harder baby.." Kamilla was whimpering. I just realized that I had slowed down. Her
"What's the death toll?" My father commanded as I entered the War room behind Kaine. There were several people gathered around the large table. Torren looked like he was about to say something when one of the other men spoke up. "A total of thirteen dead from the Alpha Summit. Sixteen from the planned attacks across the different packs prior. A total of Twenty Nine needless deaths. All Alphas are accounted for, four dead Lunas and a few deaths related to betas and their mates. From the Summit and a few others." Another man spoke. "What's the plan moving forward?" Torren asked. "That's what we're here to decide. I think the best course of action is to split our warriors into three sections. We split up the groups into arrangements of lycans, wolves, panthers, and bears. We fortify our center group right through the middle with the strongest we have. Lycans should take the front line followed by groups of Panthers, bears, and Wolves. They will be the center of attention and likely the
"Alright, Valeria. There are three battle formations of a Lycan." Valeria tilted her head to the side, confused. "The first form is mostly what you use now. The usual shifter type. Then there's a second form. A larger wolf that will dwarf the size of a normal shifter. The final form is called the Royal Lycan form. A werebeast. The mixture of humanoid and Wolf. This form is only to be used in dire situations, and hard to control. The duration you spend in the Royal Lycan form can make a difference in battle, that's true. However, it's also unstable, unpredictable, and more feral than a normal Lycan energy can sustain. The human host can completely lose their humanity and find themselves unable to shift back. I will show you all three forms, but be wary that the third form is only to be used when your life is at stake." My father insisted. I watched him shift, like Reya... His wolf was mostly solid white with the exception of dark paws. The second form was just a beefed up version of t
The ride to my father's kingdom was a long one. I spent most of the time looking out of the window and trying to get the sight of so much blood, destruction and death out of my mind. It was hard not to close my eyes and see those girls lying there. I didn't want to admit it, but the situation had me a bit shaken up. Zayden sat in the back seat, continuously fussing over Winter. It's not that I could blame him. There wasn't that much of an age difference between me and my brother. Zayden was actually only a couple of months older than me. Shifters had short pregnancies, but I had heard that Lycan births came by even more quickly. He found his mate at sixteen and married her barely a year and a half later. I loved Winter, but I often worried for Zayden's state of mind, going from being a kid, to being a mate, to being a husband. It had to be a lot. Behind us, there was a row of several cars. They were all headed in the same direction, to the Kingdom of the Southern territory. It took a
Get up girl! We are under attack! So Sleepy... Valeria, the wolves are closing in. Get up! "Valeria!" Kaine's voice woke me from my dazed state. My eyes fluttered open and I was able to take in the sight of Kaine leaning over me. I took his hand as he helped me to my feet. There was cuts and scratches along his arms, no doubt from the falling glass. "What happened?" I heard myself ask and Kaine was in the process of ripping off his jacket. "There's little time to explain. We're under attack. The explosion, I suspect if we hadn't called for a recess that all the Alphas would be dead. We have enemies coming from the west end of the lot. Us Alpha's will handle this squirmish. Since you don't seem to be all that injured, I need you to go inside the conference room and look for the surviving Lunas and help all you can." The realization suddenly hit me, and my legs suddenly started moving on their own. Winter! I heard Kaine let out a roar as his clothing shredded and the snapping of wol
The meeting room was filled with different Alphas, most of them male. However, there were a few females situated inside. The seating arrangements consisted of long tables facing a smaller table up front with most of the occupants sitting behind these long tables and facing towards the shorter table at the front of the room. The three Lycan Kings took their seat along that row. Kaine kissed my cheek and took his seat at the end of one of the other rows, while Zayden and I were situated at the end of the main table. Ulric stood first. "We will now commence the meeting of the Alpha Summit. We will handle small trivial matters first. If you'd like to approach with your concerns, we will address those first. After we finish with these matters we will get into the larger more pressing matters. Who would like to go first?" A woman stood first. She was covered with multiple tattoos, She had long dark hair, but had half of it shaved. The hair fell and covered one of her eyes. I could smell th
