Chapter 9 What Is “That”?

New East Corporation was far from Clarissa’s university. Thus, she rented a two-bedroom apartment near the company with someone for convenience.

Luke was living in their mother’s house.

On Saturday at ten o’clock in the morning, Damien picked Clarissa up.

Clarissa had dressed decently according to Damien’s request. She wore a white shirt, a red skirt, and a pair of white sneakers. Overall, she looked very youthful. Young people tended to look good no matter what they wore.

Damien was not driving. He sat in the backseat beside Clarissa.

When she got into the car, he only glanced at her without saying a word.

Clarissa suddenly remembered something when they were on the highway. Did her marriage arrangement with Damien include sex?

She signed the contract in a blur without even asking for further clarifications. The lack of money had probably driven her insane.

They almost arrived at Damien’s grandfather’s house. Since the two of them had to put up an act, they would have to sleep together. Would Damien request to have sex?

At that moment, Clarissa suddenly quivered.

She did not know if the driver knew about their marriage arrangement. Hence, she was extra careful to ensure he did not overhear their conversation. Clarissa decided to just send Damien a Whatsapp message.

[ President Lawrence, does our contract involve doing “that”? ]

Damien slowly picked up his phone after hearing it ring. He tapped into Whatsapp to check the message.

Clarissa sat still and gripped her phone tightly.

Soon, the notification “1 message from 1 chat” popped up on her phone’s screen.

She unlocked her phone to read the text.

[ Stranger: What is “that”? ]

Clarissa’s head was about to explode. This man was actually pretending to be ignorant about such a crucial question.

Did he really not understand? Was he faking it?

[ It’s “that.” ]

A moment later, Clarissa’s phone beeped again. She quickly unlocked her phone with facial recognition.

[ Stranger: What do you think? ]

Upon seeing the reply, Clarissa almost went insane. She was speechless.

Clarissa’s fingers were just moving across the keyboard because she did not know what to type. Suddenly, Damien’s voice rang in her ear. “Am I ‘Stranger’?”

His voice made Clarissa shudder. She did not expect him to ask that question. When she turned her head, he was squinting his eyes at her phone.

Clarissa’s Whatsapp displayed that she was messaging with “Stranger”.

“Huh?” Clarissa was puzzled. Nonetheless, she instantly added, “It’s a code name. I was scared that if I wrote ‘President Lawrence’, someone might see it and expose our relationship.”

Her words also showed that she did not go around telling people about their relationship and had been keeping it a secret.

Damien could not be bothered to talk to Clarissa. He turned his head and looked outside the window.

‘Why is he so lukewarm? Can’t he reply properly?’

Since Damien did not answer her on Whatsapp, she decided to ask him directly. At this point, she did not care if the driver found out.

“President Lawrence, did you bring condoms?” Clarissa asked in a serious tone while facing Damien.

She could not risk getting pregnant. After all, she still had to sit for the certified public accountant exam, earn money, and become successful. There was no way she would let a child hold her back.

When Damien heard Clarissa’s words, he turned his head and stared at her with a slight frown. It was as if he wanted to say, “How can a girl be so brazen?”

“No.” After answering indifferently, he turned his head and looked outside the window again.

Clarissa gulped. She was extremely nervous.

However, she comforted herself by thinking, ‘Maybe he didn’t bring condoms because he had no plans of having sex. He might have regretted his previous decision. Now that he’s wide awake, he will not allow the same incident to repeat itself. Besides, he’s the president of New East Corporation. How can a mere intern be allowed to bear his child?’

With those thoughts, Clarissa breathed a sigh of relief.
