Chapter 7 The next morning, Elena sat weeping softly as she stared at her knees. Everything semed so surreal and she could barely believe her sister was gone. “Hey,” Marcel said with a knock as he stepped into the room. Elena tried to wipe her face quickly but Marcel had already noticed her crying. The previous night after promising to help Elena, he had gone home to sleep and returned the next day. When he arrived, Marcel went straight to the doctor’s office to get Elena discharged and sign all her paperwork. “You’re crying again,” Marcel said softly as he sidled up to her bedside. “Yeah, I seem to be doing a lot of that lateyl,” Elena chuckled humorlessly. “Elena,” Marcel said softly as he held her hands and squeezed it. “I’m fine,” She said as she shook herhead to clear the thoughts that had haunted her all night long. “No, you’re not,” “It’s just. I guess after everything that happened. Some part of me hoped that David would come see me in the hospital. I mean, he’s my ne
Chapter 8Elena walked into the company building with renewed Virgor. She was about to carry out the plan that had been stewing in her mind all night long and she couldn’t help but feel slight excitement. They walked into the company together but while Marcel took the elevator to his office, Elena took the stairs. She was trying to avoid being seen by another person as much as possible. Her plan depended on David’s ignorance about her presence in the company. Elena climbed to the fifth floor where David’s office was, as briskly as she could. After being married to him for five years, she knew David’s timetable and knew he was not present in the office. She stood behind the stairway door and peeped through a small crack in the door. Elena smiled a bit as she saw David’s secretary sitting at her desk. The girl had always been a simpleton so it was pretty easy for Elena to fool her. Elena knew she didn’t have much time so she quickly but quietly retrieved her phone from her jeans p
Chapter 9Adrenaline surged through Elena’s veins as her survival instincts kicked in. She quickly evaded the impending blow as she scrambled out of the chair narrowly missing David’s attack. “What the fuck is wrong with you!” Elena screamed in terror as David crashed into the desk in surprise. She didn’t wait to get a reply from him and leaned forward to tap the enter button on the mouse for the video transfer to begin. David righted himself and grabbed Elena’s hand aggressively as she tried to pull away. “I’ve had enough of you!” David growled in anger as she slapped Wlena across her face. Elena went crashing into the table from the impact of the blow. Her vision swam, and she gripped the edge of the table with her hands as she used it as support to get back to her feet. “You killed my sister. I’m going to ruin you,” Elena swore in a low voice as the monitor began to beep and ‘TRANSFER COMPLETE’ flashed across the screen. David looked to the monitor as the truth of what Elen
Chapter 10Evangelyn’s living room was the first sign that someone had gotten to the house before them. It was in disarray with pillows strewn about, the contents of the cabinets littered on the floor, and some of the sofas ripped open. Tears filled Elena’s eyes as she stepped in. The smell of her sister was still fresh and enveloped her as she walked deeper into the house with Marcel trailing her softly. “They came here. I don’t know how they knew Evangelyn had something on them but David and his bitch came here,” Elena said to Marcel with her eyes flashing as they stepped into the kitchen and surveyed even greater damage. All of Evangelyn’s things had been thrashed in an effort to find whatever evidence she might have been keeping for Elena. “Do you think they got the document?” Marcel asked in defeat as he looked around at the seemingly hopeless situation. “No. They couldn’t have. The hiding spot is secure and only Evangelyn and I know where it is,” Elena replied with a shake o
CHAPTER 11Marcel! Marcel!” Elena called out in terror as she hurriedly looked around the kitchen and the living room, but Marcel wasn’t there. Fear overtook Elena’s mind as the sounds of the police coming out of their cars and conversing amongst themselves hit her. “He probably went out to confirm if there was any problem,” Elena muttered to herself in panic as she tried to make sense of the present situation. Elena’s adrenaline rose, she panted and paced about the base of the staircase in utter confusion and fear. She knew the news was fake, but only two other people knew the truth. Her dead sister Evangelyn, who was no longer in the picture, and Marcel, who was surprisingly nowhere to be found. “Marcel!” She yelled out for the last time, hoping that he had gone up the stairs and would hear the sound of her voice, but her call was met with silence, and in a split second decision, she decided to save herself first. From the side of her vision, she saw the policemen making their
Chapter 12“Elena, what do you think you’re doing?” David wheezed as he tried struggle against her grip.“I said Don’t move!” Elena hissed in anger as she tightened her hold on his neck.“Elena you’re choking me” David coughed as he tried and failed to loosen her grip.“I’m just choking you and you’re complaining,“ she paused a bit and continued “After everything you’ve put me through choking you doesn’t seem so extreme. You’re lucky I’m not with a knife I would slit your throat without thinking twice,” Elena finished with utter disgust in her tone.“Well, that’s a great idea,“ David replied with an amused smile.“Just that you’d kill me and still lose everything,” he added with a chuckle “What does that mean?” Elena asked apprehensively as her mind began to race.“Chelsea. Chelsea is my next of kin and she’d get everything, so even if you are foolish enough to kill me, it still…”David didn’t get to finish his sentence because in a surge of rage, Elena smashed the bottle on David’s h
Chapter 15Elena spent the next few days resting and planning as much as possible to make her plan foolproof. With the money she had taken from David, she paid for her cab and a few nights at the motel. The moment she got there, she rested for a bit, then searched his wallet for money she could use to buy some stuff. There was no loose change in his wallet, but she found two of his credit cards, which she used in the store. She bought a box of hair dye, new clothes, painkillers, scissors, and some new shades.Elena had been reluctant to use the credit cards to prevent David from tracing the transaction, but the cash she had found on David was low, so all she could do was hope he didn’t notice his missing wallet.“Thank you,” Elena said kindly to the room service lady who had delivered her breakfast.Over the last few days, she had made sure to leave her room as little as possible. Going as far as to have her food delivered directly to her doorstep. Even her motel room was registered u
Chapter 16“Yeah! Come here!” Elena whispered as she beckoned wildly for Marcel to join her at the edge where she stood, covered by trees.“What are you doing here?” Marcel asked her in confusion as his eyes roamed her in shock.“Why haven't you been making my calls?” Elena snapped in irritation as soon as he came close to her.She pulled on his hand and lead him deeper into her makeshift hiding place.“Elena, wait, you're not making any sense. Why are you here?” Marcel asked again as he continued to stare at her like she had grown a second head.“What do you mean why am I here? David set me up with the police, he canceled my credit cards, I can't go home, the only hope I have is the evidence with you and you haven't been taking my calls! You just abandoned me to find for myself,” Elena whispered hotly as she blinked her tears away furiously.Marcel's brows rose in what Elena interpreted to be understanding as he held her gently.“Hey, calm down. It'll all be fine,” He said softly.Bu
