40. The right guest list

My first reaction would have been to run back upstairs and lock myself in my room, but Alex’s words caught my attention. Taking some steps back, I crossed my arms on my towel and gave him a look that said I-don’t-trust-you-but-you-can-speak.

He seemed to be carefully considering what he was going to say. I could see an apology all over his face.

Was he playing with me? Was he going to lie to me like I feared Thomas would when we met? Alex’s behavior reminded me of a scared sheep, left outside after nightfall.

“Speak or get out of my way,” I bit with a confident voice.

My hair was still dripping wet and tiny water drops were tickling the skin on my forearms, falling on the floor. I was feeling uncomfortable and naked. I just wanted to hear whatever he had to say and go somewhere where he was not.

“I've wanted to talk to you since the day after the party. When I sobered up, I couldn’t stop thinking of what I said and did…” Alex’s eyes were glued to his shoes while he was speaking,
