CHAPTER 8

Makaila's POV

It was lunch break and everyone was in the cafeteria. Nigel decided to sit with me today. It felt nice because I have never had anyone seat with me before. We were talking when the cafeteria door flew open and the clique of jocks came, Christian leading the way.

All of them in their varsity jackets. I felt a tinge of familiarity. I couldn't help but feel they all wore it for a reason. They rarely wore their jackets except they were having a game that evening. I looked at Nigel with a raised eyebrow.

"They are planning to do a welcome party for a new student." He clarified. That statement alone made my eyes widen in realization.

"Seriously?! That awful. Christian won't let them do it, will he?" I asked.

"Makaila, sometimes he doesn't have a say. I wonder if he is really a captain." Nigel sighed.

I saw Tyler drag a girl out. Looking at her clearly she was what you will describe as cute. She was of an average height, petite with curves in the very right places. She was blond with plump pink lips. She looked really scared.

You might think welcome party was something really fun and nice. Well, hate to burst your bubble people, but it's far from nice. It's when the Jocks decides to humiliate and embarrass the newest kid in school.

My "welcome party" was a terrible experience. Since then, they haven't stopped taunting me. Building up my self esteem was a futile effort since they always found a way of bringing shatter it.

"What's your name, pretty." James cooed, trying to act like he wasn't going to hurt her.

"It...it's Rita. Look I haven't done anything wrong. Just let me go." She pleaded.

"Ohhh sweetie. We will let you go very soon. Well, after we do this." Suddenly Tyler's fist collided with her face. I gasped in horror.

Rita's scream echoed throughout the cafeteria. Everyone was laughing and taking a video of the whole thing. I felt sick to my stomach. This was wrong. It had to stop. I looked at Christian. He wasn't part of the beating but he was enjoying himself, watching the show with Bethany on his laps and laughing as well.

I grimaced with disgust. Then I decided what to do. I didn't care whether I was going to get beaten. I stood up suddenly. Nigel looked at me like I have gone bananas.

"Makaila, what the fuck are you doing?!" He whispered harshly to me. I ignored him and mentally prepared myself for whatever would happen.

"Stop!" I screamed on top of my lungs.

The whole cafeteria grew quiet. Tyler and the others stopped and looked at me. Christian raised an eyebrow at me as if asking me what I was doing. I ignored him totally and went to stand between the Jocks and the bleeding girl. She was crying profusely.

"Hey, get out of the way before I do something really bad to you." Tyler said through gritted teeth. From no where I felt a burst of confidence. I took a step closer to Tyler.

"No! I can't stand by and watch you do this. She's really in pain. Haven't you guys had your fun? Just leave the poor girl alone." I told him.

Tyler was furious. Christian was giving me this are you crazy look but I don't care whatever he thinks. He just proved me right. He was like the rest of them even though he claimed otherwise.

"Don't try to be an hero, freak. Get out now before I hurt you." Tyler growled.

"You know what? Bring it!"I replied confidently.

Everyone was surprised. I was also surprised. What the hell have I gotten myself into?

Tyler raised his first to punch me. I closed my eyes and braced myself for impact. But it never came. I opened my eyes and saw Nigel in front of me. His hands had stopped Tyler's fist mid air and he had a bone crushing grip on it. Tyler was wincing in pain.

Nigel wasn't all that popular because he didn't move with the jocks, but he was popular for both his music and fighting skills. Tyler or any other jock were no match for him. Well, except Christian but he rarely fought. I quickly rushed over to Rita to help her.

"She said...leave Rita alone. You have a problem with that boys?" Nigel raised an eyebrow, daring them to try anything stupid.

"No. Boys, we are done here." Tyler gave the order and they retreated. The whole cafeteria was in silence. Nigel looked at Christian. He was angry but Nigel didn't care. He shook his head at Christian and joined me to help Rita to the nurse.

Christian's  POV

After the whole scenario in the cafeteria, I was sorta pissed. Not only because Makaila stood up for that girl but because She and Nigel were working together. What was the deal with both of them anyway? Through the week they have gotten close. Nigel brings her to school and takes her back.

I know I shouldn't be feeling this way but I couldn't help it. I stood up and walked out of the cafeteria hoping to see Makaila and I did. She was by a locker I presumed to be Rita's, getting books and placing them into the bag . I walked up to her, took her hand and pulled her to a quiet area where we could talk. Immediately we got there she jerked her hand off from me and folded her hand.

"Excuse me, you can't just pull me to a corner of the hall way." She said frowning. She sounded really angry. What did I do? I wasn't the one that beat Rita up.

"What did hell was that for?! How dare you pull that kind of stunt in the cafeteria? Do you want to get yourself killed? You and I know Tyler and the guys won't hesitate to." I snapped.

"Really?! You think standing up for Rita was a bad thing. I had to do what was right. They could have killed her or caused a permanent damage to a part of her body. I did the right thing, something you obviously don't have the balls to." She snapped right back and I was shocked at her boldness.

"Its a tradition, Makaila and it has been going on for years. I honestly don't know why you are venting because last I checked, I was not part of the guys that beat up Rita." I told her.

"Are you this dumb!" She suddenly said. I was shocked. Did she just ask me that?

"Excuse me?"

"Seriously, you are acting dumb, stupid in fact!" She retorted and I stood, awestruck. She scoffed and continued.

"You are the captain of the football team, Christian. You call the shots. You could have simply told them to stop beating her but you didn't. Instead, you sat down like a mannequin, enjoying the show with Bethany on your lap. I am sure you had your fun quite alright." She folded her hand sassily.

Wait, she is jealous?

"Is that what this is all about? Bethany staying with me?" I smirked cockily and she rolled her eyes.

"You are delusional if you think you hold that much importance to me." She deadpanned, to my shock. She jabbed her index to my chest.

"This is about you not standing up for what is right. Nigel was right, I really wonder if you are really the captain of the team because you don't act like one. Rather you are being pushed around by your so called 'friends'." She sighed and began to walk away, leaving me awestruck. She suddenly stopped and turned around.

"You told me you were nothing like them. That's a big lie, Christian Hales. You are everything like them, even worse." She concluded and walked out, leaving me to my conscience.
