9. The City Of Dreams
The city rose before their eyes.
The cobbled paths were decorated with colored smaller and bigger pieces of what seemed to be semiprecious stones, in pink, green, brown, and blue, mixed with polished river stones, giving a beautiful effect, especially where the sun touched the streets.
The palace was a huge stone structure with four towers and several thin golden chimneys that let out white steam.
The streets beamed with happy, relaxed people that came and went from one store to the next one.
The most usual theme was motion and the large gears that moved the machinery which allowed that transit.
What surprised Annabelle the most was the toy store.
It was the biggest window in downtown. Framed in golden with red thin lines, the glass allowed the passersby a peek of a fantasy world within the fantasy world.

They were standing right in front of the exit of that weird and scary metallic box that took them downstairs. Annabelle and Dominik followed The King all the way from the steam room, where they had met the Monarch, to the hidden terrace of the Palace.Most of the walk was in silence, except when the things she saw were too interesting not to gasp for them. "Really!? I almost can't believe we'll go there.""Yes, I will take you there, but we're not entering the mirror.""Why not?""Because they are... The portal closed right when he was getting there, and a new one took its place. Immediately, Dominik raced in the opposite direction, way back to the palace, in hopes that the portal could be accessed, and he could go in to help her. The way she reacted, he kept thinking, was because she was not used to the energy of the mirrors, more so because they were calling for her to enter.For her to go in and be "fixed."Dominik kept saying that the mirrors were tamed energy. It really was an easy-to-say definition of what they really were. Still, there was a little more to them that he usually didn't say.He didn't expect people to run straight to one of the portals and disappear without him. He usually went with people that wanted a guide. The air was starting to feel scarce, and the room smaller.Suddenly Annabelle woke up covered in sweat and with severe pain in her chest and left arm.She opened her eyes, feeling weak, and knowing that the only reason for her to wake up was that she was almost unable to keep breathing.She stretched her arm towards the bell that had been put not even two hours previously by herself on her nightstand, and reached, not without difficulty.The bell reverberated through the hall, bringing three helpers and two worried parents. "Dear diary:Today, the first night at the house in Exeter, I decided to try the sleeping pills that Dr. Marsh added to my long list.I can say without a question that they fulfilled their purpose, but also, apparently, too strong for me.I had the weirdest, most amazing dream, that also was one of the scariest I've ever had.Who am I kidding? Annabelle found herself back in the dream, the place that scared her so much, not long before. So big was her fear that she started feeling as if the air was running out of her lungs again, and she had to fight it to stay. "But why am I back, if I didn't even take another pill. I thought it was the only way to get here again."She was scared, confused, and worried. She knew the only way out was moving, but where can you move if you can't even see?Her lantern was on the floor, still turned on. Everything was as if she had put a pause on the whole mirror when she left, and then it moved again when she came back.With a shaky hand, she moved her body down slowly to get the lantern again. Dominik fell into the water, close to the spot where Annabelle fell before. He tried to stay afloat and soon started swimming, but it wasn't long before the filaments that were holding Abbie got to his foot.He saw very possible that this thing that now lived under the water was the same that had made the holes that lead to the cave. The thing that he felt holding him might have been something Abbie had to fight as well. Domi took out his Sheffield knife and easily cut the threads that were holding his foot. He moved faster to try and get to the other side where he finally took out the watch-like device again and saw the red dot still in motion.It seemed to keep going through the passageway, almost in front of him.
