Prologue: When It All Started

Once upon a time, in a land unknown, in a time forgotten, there lived a king, King Xerxes. He had two lovely wives, and he loved his life. One day, the king went hunting, deep into the woods, and got attacked by a ferocious beast. His body was mauled and ravaged, and he was on his last breath when a beautiful witch saved him, breathed life into his dying body. The king was filled with love and gratitude for the witch and asked her to make a wish. The witch asked for his love, to take her as his wife and show her the royal life.

“I have lived in the woods in makeshift shacks for too long. Please uplift me from this poverty, and I will be yours forever, faithful and resourceful."

The king didn’t waste a breath in accepting her proposal. They got married in no time, and she became the apple of his eye. But the king was never the same ever since he got attacked by the beast. He thought it was a giant wolf that attacked him but he never got to see it clearly. His body was changing and so was his temper. Many people believed that it was the witch that was casting spells on him to keep him under her control.

She soon got pregnant with his baby and was really worried about how the king was affected by his people’s opinion. Everyone hated her and blamed her for his poor health. The king soon forgot that it was her who saved him and gave him a second chance at life. Too scared to die under her dark magic, he throws her out of the palace on a full moon night.

Heartbroken and six months pregnant, the witch walks by the banks of Nile, willing to sacrifice her life if that meant her husband survived from whatever was inflicting such misery on him. Just when she was offering her last prayers to the river goddess, she thought her water broke.

It can’t be! She panicked. She was unusually big for someone whose baby was only a six-month-old fetus. She clutched her stomach in pain and was filled with remorse for wanting to end the little one’s life when she thought about killing herself. How could she forget him? She knew it was a boy.

She chanted under her breath, distracting herself from the pain that pierced through her body with each contraction.

The waters of the Nile shuddered at the sound of the baby’s first cry. The moon emerged out of the clouds wanting to take a peek at the newborn; the first alpha.
