Layers of protection around the house were gone; silver fronds were nowhere to be found. A strong tide of loss washed over her soul as Miracle walked in. Her eyes reddened. Flashes of Hayden were still everywhere, stirring up a strong pang of regret in her.

The regret of failing to protect him.

"I wish you were here with me, Mr. Hayden," she wept. "I wish you saw how we defeated the evils. I wish you—"

"I wish I was there to save you, Mr. Hayden. Just like you did to me."

Melvin came close and entwined his fingers with hers. She tightened her grip, her broken gaze pouring out shades of guilt and sorrow she had for her half-mortal father. Her lips trembled. She couldn't hold back her stream anymore.

"I miss him, Melvin."

He patted her head and pulled her into his warm embrace, straightening the black tangled strands peeking through. Was it her illusion? Every touch of his seemed to have healing power, easing her buried pain of losing somebody she treasured.
