Chapter 2 Attack

Trudging through the woods, I try and recollect my thoughts. This had to happen. It’s only right that it happened. I wasn’t her mate. I should have known that from the beginning. Throughout the whole process I had known we weren’t destined to be.

Yet – I still felt anger and hurt bubbling inside of me. I let out an eternal growl, sick of feeling like this. No, I had to focus on my pack. I had to focus on getting on with my life.

I make my way back to the border, ignoring the howls that’s piercing the night air. It’s probably just her idiotic mate. I wonder what would have happened if I just attacked the guy?

Probably have lost. Yeah, definitely would have lost.

A flash of white catches the corner of my eye and I swiftly turn my head towards the area. Running along with me is a snarling wolf, a bit bigger than me and clearly a status. I speed up but it’s no use as another wolf jumps in front of me, teeth snarling.

I skid to a halt, my heart thundering. I can try and fight them?

There’s no harm in trying to fight… two betas and emerging from my right, a… an omega. Yeah, no harm.

Damn, today was just not my day.

I let out a growl, getting ready to attack the omega. If I get it down, I can focus on the bigger opponents. But before I can even advance, a sharp pain erupts in my neck. The wolf on my left had decided that it was high time to try and kill me. I try to shake him off, feeling his teeth tearing at my flesh as they unclench from my neck.

But just as the thing finally let go, another sharp pain came from my shoulder. I gritted my teeth, trying to not succumb to my shaking legs. With a sharp turn, I can feel the teeth unlatching and then, before anyone else can try and zombify me – I jump towards the first wolf I can see.

It’s the smaller wolf and as I clench into his neck, the omega lets out a whimper. O the irony…

The other two wolves are on me in a millisecond, making me roll to the ground. I look up, trying to stop my brain from fogging out but all that happens is me slowly turning back into a human. The omega-wolf advances towards me and with a final bite, everything fades into darkness.

I tear away from her thought keep my hands on her shoulders. I wasn’t ready to let go of her just yet. Eyeing her sceptically, her crystal eyes staring back at me.

“I… I… did he?” she’s struggling through the words, trying to make complete sense of what she wanted to say about the monster. If she was fearful he may return. That couldn’t happen.

“He’s taken care of” I responded, giving her a light smile to reassure her. Her frown only increases however, still sceptical.

“Did he go back to the border?”

I nod, leaning in for a hug. I just want to hold her, be with her. She’s my mate. I drowned in her glorious scent, feeling her soft exposed skin of her arms. It felt like velvet. I leaned my head into the nape of her neck, my breath tickling the warm skin there.

We were still standing like that – me never wanting to let her go when I heard rustling coming from the trees. I lifted my head, feeling slightly annoyed as Derrick came out of the woods. He had a nasty gash on his neck that seemed to be healing slowly and looked pretty wrecked. Lily lifted her head but I kept it down, not needing her to worry about my omega.

I lifted my eyebrow, waiting for a response. Derrick nodded and I responded back, indicating that I’ll talk to him later. Derrick headed back into the woods and Lily once again leaned her head away.

“Felix, You okay?”

Yes, yes. My name being spoken by her. As if my name had meant nothing before she had said it. Before she had given me a purpose. She could have called me an idiot and I would have responded to that only from now on. That bell-like voice chiming in my ears like a beautiful melody.

“I’m perfect” I smiled, “Are you?”

She nodded, “So, you’re my mate”

With the sound of the words, my wolf – for the first time in my life – actually howled in my head. Her cheeks reddened and I had to control myself from not kissing her right then and there. I nodded, feeling how a smile slowly spread on my face. She bit her lip, her eyes shining.

“I’m your mate” I said and then I watched as her smile faded and I felt dread creeping up. Was she upset? Did she want someone else? Inside my head, my wolf growled – his possessive side already coming forth.

“Are you disappointed?”  The words come out as a whisper, as if she’s too scared to hear the answer. For in case it’s the impossible. This is the thing about finding your mate. Unlike folklore and all that, it rarely happened that someone met their mate at first sight. Of course it had happened but it was rare. The females were also the first one to identify their mate and then, everything changed.

As soon as that word gets uttered from female lips, the male’s brain turns into mush. Wonderful amazing mush. We couldn’t be disappointed in who was our mate. And even if we could.

I didn’t think I would be. Maybe all those years of torment was actually just our wolves craving attention from one another?

I starred at her, her forehead creased in worry. Her chin was lightly wobbling and I placed my finger underneath it, stilling it. Starring deep into those orbs of storms and oceans, I uttered the words as if it was a promise.

“Squirrel, I’m the complete opposite”
