"You want to make a nobody the Alpha of our pack, that would never happen under our watch Balthazar," Demetrius said pacing the hall where all the decisions concerning their pack were made. 

Alpha Balthazar just stared at his Beta, he was supposed to be his right-wing man, his friend. But he was the one leading the opposition against his son taking over from him.

"What do you have against my son, He has always proven his loyalty to the mountain pride pack. My son has paid his due and has outdone his peers in ensuring that that we thrive as a pack. The other day he singlehandedly saved your son from the claws of death. Tell me my friend who is better suited to take over from me." Alpha Balthazar was already on the verge of losing his patience, his wolf was becoming restless and his human was too weak to keep it in check.

 For months now he had not shifted because of the sickness ravaging his body. He wanted to hand it over to his son so he could take care of his ailing body and also connect to his wolf. But his beta and some of his council members had opposed him.

"You can retire, Balthazar. You have served the pack well. Our community has progressed under your leadership, we are the second largest and richest amongst all the packs in this region all thanks to your good intuition but on your idea of making your son the Alpha we are sorry we have to say no." Raphael interjected.

Balthazar rose from his seating position and hit his fist hard on the table  "And why is that, my son is next in line to succeed me." His eyes rolled over the room blazing hot. 

They all knew he had a raging temper that was kept at bay since his son came into his life. 

"Calm down, none of us is against you, but you know our leader must be the true son of the Alpha. But your son isn't." Demetrius 

Alpha Balthazar roared up in laughter getting a confused look from his council members and Beta. "You all are delusional, Czar is my son and you all know that."

"Is he?. Was he birthed by Luna Phoebe, is he the seed of your loins." Demetrius challenged 

"You all mock me. Czar is a hundred times better than all your seeds and yourself combined. You Demetrius, your son is only alive today because my son risked his life to save him."

Seated now, tired from all the arguments his hands over his face, "The meeting is adjoined till tomorrow, I need my rest."

They dispersed one after the other till it was just the Beta. "Don't take this the wrong way, Balthazar. Have your rest till you feel well enough to discuss your succession." 

He watched as his long-time friend and Beta walked out of the hall. They had been long-time friends from time immemorial, they had fought side by side, conquered territories together, and even cried together.

Now that he needed his support his decision had gone against him. Thinking back he remembered that his Beta had been behaving strangely this few months since he became ill, he rarely visited him or joined him for their morning run, it had been like a ritual for both of them. They would leave their homes at the early house of the morning when every creature was still in slumber once they shifted, they ran for miles and once their longs had soaked in enough air they would turn back to humans and swim in the cold creek not too far from their home.

It seemed like centuries ago that they last spent time together. Balthazar made a mental note to confront his Beta and get some answers from him.
