Chapter 6

Luka

After breakfast, which was delicious by the way, JP walked me out. We spoke about things that needed to be taken care of in the pack while am away then I shifted into my wolf form and ran into the forest. My wolf is more than happy to be out as he did not get a chance to come out in morning because I was busy training her.

His large paws left prints wherever we step, he sniffed the air the let out a howl. After that we started running at high speed, we were both anxious to get there and see the pack. We both missed the pups and our mother. My friend Xander, he was one wolf that accepted me from the moment he saw me, while others wanted me dead.

They grew to love me though, trust and depend on me. I had more ways to protect the pack than any of them did and that is because of my human side. Now they do not see my human side as a weakness but a strength. I started to feel the change in the air the closer we got to the mountain and that seemed to fuel my wolf to run faster.

He was excited and so was I. It has been three years since we left this place and now it feels like coming home. This is my first home before the pack anyway, this is where I was raised, this is where I learned to be a man and stand on my own. This place made me who I am, and I am grateful to my pack for that. My father might have been a monster but Alice my mother is a gentle wolf.

I do not remember much about my real mother as she never spent that much time with me growing up, before my father killed her. all I remember is that she liked dressing up and having meetings with other she-wolves in the pack than spend time with me. Which is why I believed it so quickly when my father told me that she wanted to kill me.

We ran up until we got to where the forest was most thick, no human would ever enter this place, it is every scary and that is why it was safer for us to hide out here. I stood there then let out a howl to let my pack know that I was back, I stood there for a moment listening to hear if they answer back but there was nothing. Only birds chipping, my heart started pounding in my chest worried that they left already.

We got into the forest running fast towards the cave, the clear road that was leading to the cave was now covered by long grass, which told me that they have not been here in a while. Where could they have gone? My wolf became anxious as we walked slowly toward the cave. I stepped on something then removed my paw on it and looked.

It was a bullet casing, my heart pounded in my chest and my wolf was agitated. They might be normal wolves but to me they were family, and that bullet casing tells me that someone was here. A human made them leave this place, how did humans even find this place? My steps were slow and laboured as I went into the cave.

I can see that it has been a long time since they have been here, the cave is full of grass as well and bones. Wait, bones! I hurried towards them and saw that it really was bones. It looked like one of the pups, my wolf whimpered, and we sat there next to the bones where my mother Alice used to sit. We sat there for a while whimpering feeling the pain of losing a pack member.

I swear that I will find whoever human did this and they will pay for what they have done. After a long time, I stood up then went to dig a whole then buried the bones in it. after I started running again, I must find whoever is left of my family and bring them back home with me. It is not safe for them here anymore. They took me in when I was young and raised me. Now it is my turn to find them and provide them protection.

I ran from one place to another, searching all the hideouts we had but I could not find them and now am only left with one hideout to check. If they are not there and there are signs that they left recently then I will know where to go. I just need clues to tell me if they have been here or abandoned this place all together after the humans found it.

It was getting late now, and the sun was setting. I ran to the next hideout not wanting to waste anymore time, my wolf and I are anxious. We do not know what to expect and it will be every sad if they left this place and never looked back. They knew that I was going to come back, they might not have understood the words, but we had a way of communicating and understanding each other.

They knew that I was not going to stay away forever, and I would like to believe that they would not leave until I got here. That they will wait until I return. When I got close to the place, I let out a howl but there was not much time to wait to hear any response, it was getting late, and I needed to search the last hideout if they are not here.

But I heard a howl back, I stopped in my tracks thinking that I had imagined it. I howled again and they responded. My heart swelled with happiness and my steps became lighter as I moved forward. Before I could go any further, I was tackled to the ground and my face licked. Alex! Oh, Goddess they were okay. I pushed him away from me then stood on all fours looking at him.

He was wiggling his tail like a dog; he is happy and so am I. My family is safe. We played and tackled each other to the ground happy to see each other again after such a long time. We heard twigs breaking and we stopped then looked at the direction. My mother Alice appeared followed by my brother who was the alpha before me and the others.

They surrounded us, they were fourteen of them when I left with the pups and now, I count thirteen. One pup is the one whose bones I found in the cave. I run to my mother tackled her to the ground licking her face then laid my head on her stomach just like I did when I was a boy. This is my safe place, where I feel loved and protected. Right here on my mother’s stomach.

The whole pack then comes and lays all around us. I can see that they are happy to see me as I was seeing them. It is time they go back with me; they are not safe here anymore and I will never forgive myself if something happens to one of them again. Already one of the pups died and I was not here to protect them. I am their alpha, and I was supposed to be here. But I was not.

We will stay for a week so that we can all say our goodbyes to this home before I take them back with me. I know they will not like it but their safety is more important to me than their stubbornness, I know that my mother and Alex will follow me without hesitation but my brother, the former alpha will not be so trilled on the idea and he might be holding a grudge against me for not being here when they were attacked.

But I also know that he will not stay when others are leaving but he will not challenge me for the alpha position again as he knows that I am much stronger than him and that the pack will be safer with me as their leader. It doesn’t bring me the comfort I need though; I wish my beta PJ was here, he would have already been on the search for who is responsible for the attack on my pack.

I know some may think that I am crazy for treat mere normal wolves like this but to me they are more than just mere wolves, they are family, and I will protect them just as much as I protect my pack back home. Even back home, they will have to understand that there is not me without these wolves here, they made their alpha who he is and if they do not appreciate that then I do not need them in my pack.

When we go back, I expect us to live in harmony, we are all animals anyway it shouldn’t be difficult.
