Chapter 22: Keep a level head

              My heart thunders in my chest as I approach my front door, and my feet feel heavy as if I’m wading through the sand. Throat tight, I carefully open the door and step inside of the dimly lit room. I blink my eyes, trying to adjust to the low light, and take a couple of deep breaths. When I walk in, the first thing that I notice is that my couch is overturned, and my television is lying face-up on the floor.

              “Close the door behind you.” The woman’s husky voice permeates the stillness of the room. Goosebumps spread down my back as she makes her presence known from the kitchen doorway. Turning around, I carefully close the door. I wince at the sound of the door’s lock clicking in place. Lips tight, I face the woman. Nothing has changed about her appearance. Her skin is still weat
