Chapter Five

“Lycans wiped out his entire family. Literally the entire family. Peter is the only one left of his genetic line. His family is thought to be the first line of vampires, so they were, and he is known to be extraordinarily powerful. Jen’s name was originally Lavinia. She’s the first and only vampire he has ever turned. All other vampires that exist are descendants of his family, but they are not related by blood. He isn’t really the only vampire, though, and is not the oldest. There is another who is like nearly four thousand years old.” Kyle answered, getting a look of surprise from Kohl. “What?”

“How do you know all about that?” Kohl was surprised, and that wasn’t easy to do.

“It’s in the history books…” Kyle replied, not knowing Kohl didn’t know, “I read…A lot, I like to read.”

“You know a lot about him,” Nora stated, and he flashed her a slight smile, which she couldn’t help but return.

“I do. I’m very interested in history, and he is a very powerful vampire. I had to know if he would be who I needed to help stop Kingston and a person as powerful as he is; well, he’s necessary to save this world from the worst evil I’ve ever seen. I know he doesn’t like or trust me; I hope I can earn it, but if I don’t, well, that’s just how it is. If what I read is true no matter his feelings toward me, he will do whatever he can to kill Kingston and protect humans.”

“He is a good man, but I don’t think he is the only one we need. We’re going to need to get Gabriel and Elizabeth.” Kohl backed.

“And talking about men… What are you?” Kyle questioned, “I’ve met hundreds of creatures and other supernatural beings, and I have never run into one like you. Who are Gabriel and Elizabeth? Oh, wait, Elizabeth is the nearly hundreds of thousands years old vampire. Never mind.”

           “I am a Nephilim…”

“What is that?” Kyle tiltled his head in curiosity just as a dog would, “I haven’t read all of the books, so I may not have gotten to that part about you.”

“I am half-angel, half-human. Heavens hate me, and hell fears me, but I can’t belong anywhere specific for my species is heaven’s biggest abomination.”

“Why have I never met another one of you?”

“We are probably, for the most part, extinct. The Gods sent angels down to hunt us and kill us. Angels had come down and bred with human women, they had no idea they could impregnate them, and so when thousands of women were birthing us, the Gods freaked.”

           “Why are you not dead?”

“Because I am lucky…” Kohl didn’t really know the answer. The Gods knew of his existence and yet had never sent anyone to kill him. Kyle realized then that the idea of being the only creature left of a species and knowing why he must be lonely, so he pressed no further.

“Well, I am glad to have met you. I can feel your power.” Kyle stated, turning to Nora.

“We should probably get started.” Nora waved for Kyle to follow her, and so he did.

They passed through a doorway to a long hallway. The walls were a cream color with paintings that were obviously very old, but they were beautiful. Kyle stopped and stared at a painting that brought out some emotions for a reason he couldn’t know. The painting was that of a man on his knees, holding a naked woman in his arms on the ground. He held her against him, and it was obvious he was crying. The setting was in a forest with a dark, cloudless sky and stars. Something about it was familiar, he knew he’d never been here before, and he knew he’d never seen it. The man was white, and the woman was black, and for some reason, it seemed as if that was important.

Kyle looked up to Nora, who patiently waited for him, and a pang of sadness took over, but for only a short moment. “Are you alright?” She asked patiently.

“Um…Yeah.” He shook his head, relieving his brain of the thoughts and emotions it conjured. He then returned to follow her to the very end of the hall. She stood in front of a dark wooden door larger than a door you’d find in a more modern house.

“So, this room is spelled. It’s a potent one; you’ll be able to feel it. So, if you feel weird, off-balance, or something, that’s why.” Nora explained, receiving only a nod of his head to acknowledge her. She pushed up the heavy door as it creaked open, and they walked in.

Kyle immediately felt dizzy and nauseated. His eyesight was blurry, and he was overcome with a sense of lost control. He passed out on the floor with a heavy thud. Nora looked at him, shook her head, and sighed before sitting down on a couch, waiting for him to wake up.

In the living room, Peter paced its length. “Peter, please. Calm down. Sit.” Jen hopelessly begged him.

“Kohl, how could you let him be alone with Nora. He’s going to kill her or something.” Peter was filled with an anxiety neither Kohl nor Jen had seen in centuries.

“Nora trusts him. I believe him. If he were a danger to her, she’d feel it. You know she senses a person, their intentions.” Kohl argued, “you trust Nora, right?”

“Of course, I trust her.” He snapped insulted by the question.

“And you trust her judgment?” Peter flashed him a glare and didn’t reply. “You trust her judgment?” Kohl pushed.

“Yes.” He said through gritted teeth.

“Then you need to calm down. You don’t have to like Kyle. You don’t even really have to trust him, but you need to trust us, and I know he is telling us the truth, and so does she. She dreamed it, the specific events he explained right down to the names and all. It’s not like he can read her mind.” Kohl stated dryly before licking his lips, closing his eyes, and sighing with exasperation. “Have Jen sit in there with them. If that would make you feel better.”

“No, I will.” Peter decided, and Kohl shook his head.

“No. You will be too much of a distraction for Nora. She will feed off your negative energy, and she needs to be on her game. You’ll throw her off. Jen won’t be so much of a distraction. I think Nora is already going to be a little thrown by Kyle as it is.” Peter didn’t quite understand what he meant, and it showed, so again Kohl sighed with exasperation, “they are attracted to each other…”

“Is that what that was?” Peter asked sarcastically as Jen took her place beside him.  She grabbed ahold of his arm and squeezed it gently, and he looked down at her, unintentionally returning her sweet smile.

“I love you.” Her tone was soft and warm, and in an instant, he relaxed some, a noticeable amount.

“I love you too.” His sincerity to her caused him to relax even more.

“I can keep her safe.” She stated, and so Peter took up sighing with exasperation and drama. “You know I can. I do, though, agree with Kohl… And with Nora. I think he is being straight with us.”

“Not you too.” He felt nearly abandoned on his feelings towards the lycan.

“I do, Honey. I do. I love you, and I will be with her if it makes you feel better, but I truly don’t think he is at all a threat to her. I think he likes her already.”

“Well, you guys do whatever you think is best, I guess.” He allowed Jen to kiss him before he walked away, defeated. Jen rubbed her face and combed her hair with her fingers and breathed out heavily before looking up at Kohl.

“I feel bad now.” Her bright eyes seemed a little darker as her negative emotions began to take over.

“Don’t. He is smart; he’ll come around. He has never had a good encounter with a lycan, and suddenly one walks into our lives, claiming to want to help us… Honestly, I think Kyle wants to help Peter the most.”

“Why would you think that?” Jen didn’t comprehend any reasoning for him to believe that.

“He wanted to make it perfectly clear that he wanted to help and that he wanted everyone to know that Peter would be the main target and he’d do whatever to help him. And to stop Kingston.”

“How do you know it isn’t for his own gain?”

“Oh no, he will gain greatly from the defeat of Kingston. The entire world will, many worlds will.”

“So, we defeat him, and everything will be better.” It wasn’t a question, but Kohl felt the need to give her a response.

“Not really. If history tells us anything, you defeat one bad guy, and another will arise to take his place. Sometimes just as bad, sometimes worse. This world will never be truly safe. Luka, for instance, is far worse than Kington, especially since it seems that Luka gave Kingston the power that he has. The world will certainly be safer with him destroyed.” Jen nodded in understanding before gracefully turning and disappearing down the hall toward Nora’s study.
