Logan drove so fast that I had to hold onto him tightly, I kept telling him to slow down but he wouldn't listen. I was afraid that we'll crash if I hit him so I tried my best not to.
"You jerk!" I said as soon as I got off of his motorcycle. I wish I can slap away the smirk on his face.
"This is where you work?"
I turned my back against him and did not bother to answer his question. I would thank him for getting me here on time if I didn't almost die along the way. I saw my boss at the counter as soon as I entered the convenience store, beside him was a girl around my age.
"Naomi, I'm glad you're here. I was waiting for you," he said.
I went closer to them and smiled. I then heard the door opening and saw Logan walk in. His eyes roamed the place, he glanced at me before focusing on the beverages. I shook my head and diverted my attention back to my boss.
"Is that your friend?"
"She's obviously not. If she's working here, that means Logan is way beyond her league," the girl said, she raised one of her eyebrows before smiling at me. I wasn't dumb, I know that it wasn't genuine.
"He's a schoolmate," I answered.
"Oh, I almost forgot that you're from Sierra University?"
"Yes, I'm a scholar there."
"You must be incredibly smart," he said with a voice filled with excitement.
I laughed awkwardly because I'm bad at taking compliments.
"Anyway, this is Dixie. She'll guide you, so get along with each other. I really have to go now," he said while glancing at his watch. "Dixie, take care of her okay?"
"Whatever," Dixie replied.
When our boss left, Dixie handed me an...apron? I guess what seems like a uniform for us. Fortunately, we don't have to change our clothes since I go here after school.
I thought she was supposed to tell me what to do and how things work around here, but she was busy staring and taking pictures of Logan.
Logan took two drinks before going to the counter. Dixie was trying to look cute as she scans the drinks. After paying for them, Logan faced me and handed one bottle to me.
"We're even now," he said. I didn't have a choice but to take it because it might fall on the floor if I didn't. As soon as he left the store, I felt the glare Dixie was giving me.
When I looked at her, she just rolled her eyes. Fortunately, she proceeded to show me what to do. During my first day, I made sure to follow her instructions and let her lead even though I feel like she doesn't like me. Based on how she talks and acts around me.
She asked me to fill up the empty shelves so that's what I did, after that she asked me to mop the floors, then clean the empty tables. Our shift ended after three hours but I had to stay behind to wait for the person that will replace us.
When I got back to the mansion, they were already done with dinner. I didn't mind because I don't want to eat dinner with my Mother again.
"You just arrived?" Aleah asked, she was already wearing her nightdress. "You missed dinner? Did you eat already?"
"Yes, I have," I lied. "How were your first days at the university?"
Even though we live under the same roof, We barely see each other. Whenever I am here, I always stay in my room. She's also almost always out with friends.
"It was great! Everyone was so nice. And there's this guy, I'm curious about him. He's older and they say he was bad news," she pursed her lips and acted as if she was thinking about the guy.
"Please don't tell me that it's Evan..." I murmured but it seems like she heard it.
"Evan! You know him? They say he's a playboy but I think he's still charming though," she giggled. "Do you want to meet my friends? I figured you weren't into all the extrovert stuff so I didn't want to drag you into it without asking you first." I guess she and Evan have mutual feelings for each other. I suddenly thought about Evan's offer.
"Oh...Socializing isn't really my thing. But uhm, I'm sure your-
"It's okay, you don't have to push yourself. Goodnight, Naomi!" she cut me off before turning around and walking back to her room.
I just shrugged and went to my room. It was a tiring day so after doing my assignments, I went straight to bed.
When morning arrived, I got up early, did my morning routine, and went to school. I wore a fitted white shirt tucked in my jeans. I also brought my jacket since I get cold easily. I was a bit anxious because I thought Evan would bother me today, but he didn't. After our classes, I went straight to work.
I was about to go in when I noticed that our boss was angry and talking to Dixie. I didn't want to be caught in an awkward situation so I waited outside for a bit. I went in as soon as our boss left, good thing he didn't notice me just standing there.
"Are you alright?" I asked Dixie, she seems pissed.
"Mind your damn business, nerd," she said before going to the storage.
I just sighed and took off my jacket before taking over the cashier. She must be pissed so I'll just let her be. After an hour, the store was filled with customers and Dixie was still in the staff room. While I was accommodating the long line at the counter, I heard a loud crash and bottles breaking.
"Excuse me," I muttered before checking where I heard the noise.
My hands went cold when I saw what happened. Some bottles from the freezer fell on the floor which created a huge mess. My eyes also scanned the kid and fortunately, he wasn't hurt.
"Phil! Come here!" The mother took her son's hand and ushered him out of the mess that the kid made.
The woman and her child were about to leave when I called out to them.
"Wait!" The woman looks at me with her eyebrows furrowed.
"It was an accident, he's a child," she said.
"I understand, but uhm you have to pay for that..." I bit my lower lip as I watch her arch her eyebrow.
"I told you, it was an accident! How old are you even? You don't even know how to handle this kind of situation?"
"She's right, Naomi. She's a customer and it was an accident." Dixie suddenly popped out of nowhere. She smiled at the woman before saying, "don't worry about it, Ma'am."
The woman then rolled her eyes at me and left with her son. I turned to Dixie to ask if that was okay.
"Is that okay?"
"Yeah, you just have to pay for the bottles since it happened on your watch," she said before turning her back on me.
"What? Wait, Dixie!" My heart started to palpitate, I wasn't even earning a lot and I haven't got my first pay yet!
"Oh, and you should clean that up too."
I watched her walk to the cashier. I massaged my temples before going to the staff room to get the mop. I don't know if that is really how it works or she just hates me even though I didn't do anything to her.
I slammed the door shut when I got out of the staff room to let her know that I was upset. I wanted to cry when I found out how many products were damaged. I had to pay for all of them and here I am, also cleaning all the mess while Dixie was enjoying her time at the cashier.
I didn't talk to her throughout our shift. After arriving at the mansion, I went straight to my room only to find my mother there.
I'm already exhausted, I don't know if I can still talk to her.
"What are you doing here?" I asked after I closed the door of the room.
"I had the helpers arrange your things," she said.
There were a lot of new things in the room, most of them are make-ups and more stuff that I don't even need.
"What do you want?" I know that she's only nice to me when she needs something.
"I want you to meet someone," she said with a meaningful smile.
I couldn't believe her. Is she turning me into her? A damn gold digger. Someone that will use people just to get what she wants?
"Whatever your plans are, leave me out of it." I want her to get caught and I don't plan to go down with her. I'll make sure that I'm gone before it happens.
"Leave you out of it? You wouldn't be in this mansion if it weren't for me!" Her eyebrow raised as well as her voice.
"I never wanted to be here. I know you married him only for his money, I know that you will ruin him the way you ruined dad. Even though Dad did everything to satisfy your greed."
Her eyes widened, I have been on the edge for a few days now. All it took was one last push for my emotions to burst.
"Your dad had nothing to give! I wasn't greedy, I just don't want to settle for less than I deserve. I didn't ruin him, he did it to himself. Why do you despise me and take your father's side when he was someone so much worse than I am. You know his crime! He confessed right in front of you!"
"You pushed him to do it!" I couldn't control my tears at this point. I was mad, hurt and I'm tired.
"It doesn't matter because he's already as good as dead by now." She was glaring at me.
"W-what do you mean?" I stopped asking her about dad when I realized that she will never tell me where he is. All I know was she forced me to come with her and leave him behind.
"Where is he?" I raised my voice as well, I don't care if someone hears us. What my father did in the past wasn't enough to make me stop loving him. I cried harder as I ask her over and over until she slapped me.
I stared at her with my lips parted. I was a fool to think that she will change.
"He's at a hospital, it's better if you start to forget about him."
"D-do you even know what my dreams are? What do I want to become someday? What makes me happy?" My lips were trembling as I spoke. "Because Dad did."
"I'm your mother, I lost a lot because I had you. You will do as I say," she firmly said.
I kept shaking my head until I left the room. I searched the jacket that I was wearing for the card that Evan gave me, I remember that I haven't thrown it away. When I found it, I quickly typed the number into my phone and called him.
I just want someone to save me, just this once.
"Evan..." I was still sobbing as I ran out of the mansion. The helpers and guards were calling out my name but I didn't give any attention to them.
"Naomi? Are you okay?" he asked.
"Meet me at the rooftop."
