Chapter 4

Caterina POV

You were staring right at me. Why could you not have done this at dawn, Sailor? Then you would have seen. You would have seen me, where I have waited for you for all these years. The curse would be lifted and we would be reunited.

What is the use of my power if I can’t break a simple curse? I would move the earth itself to be able to breach the surface and make myself known to you. I would give anything to have some way of telling you that I am right here…

I closed my eyes and began to sing, blindly hoping that the power of my Siren song would break through the barrier and reach you.

"The Heart of the Sea,

Trapped in time,

I'll sing you back to me,

Love of mine...

Below the surface,

Lie the answers you seek,

Turn your stare to the water,

Call on your soul to see..."

I had been singing your song every day for 7 years. But I’d never had your attention before, your eyes were never on the water. Always on the horizon. I notice the realisation creep over your face. You hadn’t noticed until now, you can’t see below the surface. You’ve done it my love, you’ve finally figured it out.

Hours. Mere hours, and we will be together again. There is so much to tell you, so much to explain.

Your stare did not waver from the water for the rest of the day. And when the night blanketed us with darkness, you finally gave in to rest. You knew as well as I did what the new dawn would bring.

As the first light crept over the horizon, your handsome face was revealed to me once more. Hope and desperation in your eyes as you stared with intensity at the surface. The moment our eyes met I felt the invisible chains that held me below snap and set me free. As I rose from the surface onto the deck of your ship I paused. The last thing I was expecting to feel was hesitation. But, it had been so long, and we knew so little of each other. We stood, a few metres from each other for a long time. Each carefully contemplating our next move.

You let out a heavy sigh, followed by a light chuckle breaking the silence.

“I’m so sorry… All this time, all these years… I still don’t have a name for you, my love.”

My heart soared at the sound of his voice, a hint of embarrassment in his eyes as he ran his strong hands through his soft curls. I let out a small laugh of my own before responding.

“Caterina. But you may call me whatever you wish, as long as you promise to never leave me again.”

He closed the distance between us, unnaturally fast as his lips crashed against mine. 7 years of words unsaid being forced into the intention of that one gesture. We would not be parted again. Of that much I was certain.

And now, we had work to do.
