I have no idea how my life turned out this way.  I have been on the run now for a month.  My mother told me to run as she pushed me out of our house's door.  Everything was going fine, well for our family.  Dad, mom, and I had been on the run and forever moving since I could remember.  I guess when you are the rarest type of dragon, that was your life.  In our world, the supernatural and humans coexist peacefully, for the most part.  However, there was a small number of every species that was considered special or rare.  That was my family; we are dragon shifters.  My parents are known as gemstone dragons.  Their dragons, when they shift, resemble gemstones.  My father was a black sapphire dragon, while my mother was an opal dragon.  Gemstone dragons can have special powers and can even be capable of magic.  Both of my parents had some powers but nothing very special.  No, I was what those assholes were after.  We can get our dragons at the earliest when we turn 16; I, however, got mine at the age of 6.  I am an extremely rare and powerful black opal dragon.

(We are almost there, Ty)-Gemma

(I know, finally, we can rest)-Me

(What about your mother and father’s friend?)-Gemma

(We can’t trust anyone)-Me

Mom had told me about her and dad’s best friends growing up.  I know she had sent him and his wife a letter a few months ago telling them she was sending me to them, but then the hunters happened, as did those mutant creatures.  At this point, I have no idea what town I am in or where they live.  Before mom could tell me, we were attacked, and I was shoved out the door and told to run and don’t look back.  We had lost dad five years ago during an attack, so it had just been mom and me since then.  I was really hoping she had escaped and would come to find me, but for some reason, I knew she was dead.  I felt the bond with her snap as my heart skipped a beat.  I slowed down as I neared the town.  I stopped and looked around before walking into the cafe.  I was thirsty and very hungry and wanted to sit down.  I felt like I would collapse at any second from all the running.

“Tylia?”  I heard someone say my name.

I turned around to see a familiar face.  I smiled at her and sat down in the booth across from her.  I met her two years ago when we were living in Texas.  She was visiting relatives, and we just clicked.  She was two years older than me, but we just hit it off and exchanged numbers.

“It is you.  Damn it’s been a long time.”  Valanya says.

“I know, I literally just got into town,”  I tell her.

I didn't tell her that I had been on the run or what else had happened this last month.  She is the only person outside of my family to know about me.  For some reason, my dragon trusted her, so I showed her my dragon.  She knows that my family is constantly on the run.  She says that she has an apartment not far from here and that I can stay with her as long as I need to.

“I can’t put you in danger like that,”  I state.

“I am not worried. My father owns the building.  Remember I am the alpha’s daughter.”  She points out.

I had forgotten that.  I also knew she had two younger brothers.  She had told me about them when we met two years ago.  I picked up a menu and ordered some food as she did the same thing.  I told her that I had enrolled at the high school for my last year.  I turned 18 two weeks ago, and well, things went to shit not soon after.  She tells me her brothers are also seniors, but I say nothing.  I am not looking to pick up guys, and I am not looking for my mate.  I can’t do that to some guy.  My mate deserves someone that isn’t being hunted. Nope, I am better off by myself.  Valanya looks up when the bell rings and smiles.  I turn around to see a girl walking toward us.  She sits down by her and introduces herself as Reyna.  The three of us talk, and I find out that Reyna is also a senior and tells me to stick with her and I will be fine.  I am glad to make another friend.  The three of us part ways, and I follow Valanya to her apartment.  We walk into the place, and I am in awe.  I have never been to a place so beautiful before.  Our homes were modest and had what we needed to survive.  She shows me to my room, the biggest room I have ever seen.  I set my stuff down and started unpacking my clothes.  Not that I have a lot.  I picked out an outfit for my first day at school tomorrow.  I just need to go unseen this year, and then I can leave here and never look back.  I have some relatives I know in Greece who say I will be safe there.  I take a quick shower and tell Valanya good night.  I let a few tears fall as I think about my parents.  I guess I made it to the right place, according to Valanya.  I just wish mom could have made it here with me.

I slam my hand down on my alarm clock as I sit up in bed.  It is flashing 6:30 am, and I get out of bed and head for the shower.  I don’t want to go to school, but it is a good place to go unseen.  I dry off and slip on a pair of black cargo shorts and a dark green and gold t-shirt.  I have to keep my whole upper body covered.  When I turned 16, I developed these silver and gold swirly vines across my back, up along my sides, and on my chest.  Mom and dad had no explanation for them, so I just kept them covered.  I leave my long hair down to cover up the mark that I have on the back of my neck and put on my black vans.  I grab my backpack as I leave and walk to the school.  Thankfully it is only two blocks from the apartment.  I run into Reyna on the way.  We head to the office to get my schedule and locker number.

“Hey, we are locker neighbors.”  Reyna squeals.

“Good,”  I say.

She walks me to my first class.  The most striking scent invades my senses as I get close to it.  It smells like an apple orchard after a fresh rainstorm.  I also pick up two more subtle scents.  One is warm caramel, and the other is cinnamon.  That has me puzzled.  I have no doubt that means that my mate is near.  I am not sure why he would have two different scents. The fact that Gemma is bouncing around inside my head is also a huge hint.  As I walk into the class, the scents hit me fully.  I look up and into two sets of eyes.  One set reminds me of liquid gold; the other reminds me of liquid silver.  They are obviously twins.  They both had the same mahogany brown hair that looked like the sun had naturally lightened it.  I could see that they were both solid muscles even though they were sitting down.  I turned my head when the teacher said my name.  The teacher told me to find a seat, and of course, the only one left was between the godlike twins.  I sat down, making sure that I didn’t touch them, and stared straight ahead through the entire class.

“God, why are you out of breath?”  Reyna asked.

“I had to sit between this set of twins during class and their cologne was way too strong,”  I explained.

It was a total lie; I had to get away from them.  I knew the moment I saw them and caught those scents that they were my mates.  This is a disaster.  I don’t want to find my mate.

“You mean those twins?”  Reyna asked.

They walked by us, staring me down, and I had to look away from them or get lost in those eyes of theirs.  This is bad, very bad.  I tell her yes, those twins, and she smiles.  She tells me that they are Drake and Dray, and they are the next in line to be alpha.  Fuck, that means they are Valanya’s brothers.  Now I know I have to stay away.  Thankfully I don’t have them in any more of my classes, so the day goes well.  I don’t dare step into the cafeteria.  I made sure to pack my lunch.

“Well, how did our first day of school go?”  Valanya asked.

“It was pretty boring,”  I replied.

“Well, apparently it was exciting for my brothers.  They told my parents that they met their mate today.  Did you happen to see them with a girl?”  She says.

“Sorry but I am not even sure I saw your brothers.  I didn’t see a set of twins in any of my classes.”  I state.

She hmms, but I think she believes my story.  I hate lying to her, but her brothers and I can’t happen.  I am not happy about putting her in danger by staying here.  I sure a fuck am not going to put the future alphas in danger.  I will just avoid them.  I have already switched my first-period class.  It was an elective, so it was an easy switch.  I hear my phone ding and pick it up, seeing I have a text.  I figure it is from Reyna.  It’s from two unknown numbers.  Someone has started a group chat and included me.

-Hello little mate-Drake

-I am not your mate-Me

-Oh, but you are, and we will see you in school tomorrow-Dray

-Not likely-Me

I leave the group chat and put my phone on silent.  I have no idea how they got my number.  For some reason, I can’t bring myself to block the numbers.  I definitely have to avoid them now.  I lay back on my bed, thinking about today’s events.  I wipe away a few tears that fall.  I wish I could have a normal life like everyone else.  I can’t give them what they deserve.  I just can’t put anyone in danger like that.  I am sure they will have no problem finding mates once I am gone.  I turn over, but sleep is a long time coming.
