After graduating out of National University of Ireland, Galway, O'Connell chose to stay in Galway. He got an apartment of his own, and did minor jobs, because he had it at the back of his mind that he was going to head back to Drogheda, to work and stay there. His father had been more than supportive to him, and O'Connell was really glad he took the bold step, to look for him. Being the heir to his dad's companies, he decided to not stay with his dad and brother, since he wanted to work for himself and earn his own money.
