The Tragedy Of Us
The Tragedy Of Us
Author: Ann Noan

Prologue

If she were to die tonight, this must be the best way to go. Mia held onto her seat. The tattered seatbelt lays useless by her side. Despite everything, she felt scared. Scared for both of them. It was the first time she thought about it. It was true what they said, when you're nearing the end, you only have your regrets to keep you company.

He pressed down on the gas harder, going way over the speed limit. She felt like throwing up.

“Stop the car, Lucas.”

Her trembling voice got carried over by the rushing wind from the open windows. Mia closed her eyes tightly.

“Lucas! Please!”

“Shut your mouth!” He snarled at her. The car went faster, throwing her back on the cushion with knocking force. She couldn't help but open her eyes.

He swiveled his head in her direction, the lovely blue eyes that used to look at her with love were now feverish with mania. "This is what you want right?"

They almost got hit by an oncoming truck but she took over the wheel, swerving them just in time. He suddenly grabbed her by the scruff of her neck, pulling her face closer to his.

"If you think you're getting away from me, you're dead wrong," he spat out.

In the distance, she could hear the siren wailing from the police car. Her body trembled even more. She wished they'd go away.

He pushed her roughly back to her seat and accelerated even more if that was even possible. Everything went blurry as if they were inside a tornado.

"I'll fucking chase you even if it means going to hell," he laughed mirthlessly.

"Lucas!"

She heard herself scream but was cut off as a body-wracking force almost knock her unconscious. The surge of wind roaring around her abruptly stopped. She wasn't able to process everything as her body turned over and under inside the car like a ragged doll.

There was only the ear-splitting sound of the screeching tires and the shattering of glass all around her. The car continuously rolled against the asphalt, not giving her time to comprehend what just happened. She tasted blood in her mouth and felt a distant pain as if she's floating above her body.

Then, nothing but eerie silence.

The last thing she saw was his blue eyes, now painted with the dark red of his blood, staring into nothing. Just a pair of empty hollow depths.

A deep sense of triumph swelled within her before she let the darkness swallow her whole.
