Chapter Four

Third-person point of view.

Josephine the daughter of a priest she lives in the town Stella and Aaron are planning to move to. Josephine is an Eighteen- year-end old.

She got ready quickly, she was planning to go to a funfair, her parents would never have allowed her but she lied about going to the library to read, she wore her clothes under her pajamas she packed some of her make-up and her purse in a large school bag, walking downstairs she was met by her parents.

Their sitting room wasn’t that big it had two couches, a small television a small center table painted brown, the walls were painted white, the doors were brown but on the right was a dining room some of the chairs weren’t good anymore, the room was filled with family pictures hanged all around the room, a traditional family clock kept by the television. They didn’t have enough money for an air conditioner but they had an air cooler towards the end of the room.

“I will get going, mamma.” She said in her thick Spanish accent.

“Ok, come back before 12 okay make sure you read well.” Her mother said, Josephine looked more like her mother rather than her father, with those baby blue eyes, that chocolate hazel hair, the plump lips but she had one thing from her father was height she was very tall just like her dad.

“Okay, mamma.” Josephine didn’t have a good relationship with her father, they barely spoke to each other, and they were the polar opposite. He wanted her to join the church and become a nun, but she wasn’t ready for that, she wanted to live life she wanted to explore and see the world. She stepped out and hailed a cab.

The cab driver gave her a wide smile “Are you Spanish.” he suddenly asked.

“Yes.” She said.

“Dónde a la señora(Where to madam).” He asked.

“llévenme a la divertida feria de la calle Copana( take me to the funfair at Copana street.”

She changed her clothes in the cap, it took about ten minutes to reach her destination. She paid the cab driver. She could hear the noise and laughter from the parking lot. There were not many people in the parking lot, she walked to the entrance, the smell of food hit her nostril, the carnival was big, there was a parade lot of swings a circus, and food, it had different varieties of food. She went into the circus first, they had amazing characters it was funny. Next, she decided to try the food court she saw a court for Italian dishes.

“Hello, I will like to try one of your best dishes,” Josephine said to the chef with a smile on her face.

“Caprese Salad with Pesto Sauce.” The chef said in his Italian accent.

“Okay, I will try that,” Josephine said with a smile on her face.

When the food touched her test buds, she smiled, the tomatoes were beautifully arranged, the mozzarella was cut into chunks and the pesto sauce was delicious. She spread a smile across her face when the sauce made contact with her test buds.

“ I love it,” Josephine said while smiling at him.

“Thank you, ma’am.” The chef said with a smile on his face.

She dropped her food to quickly use the restroom, the restroom was neat, with white walls sinks attached by the right, a couple of doors leading to the toilet, by the right was a hand sanitizer, she used the first toilet she found open once she was done with the business she left. The funfair became nosier. She decided to try the roller coaster, she arrived there to be met with Britney. Britney her high school mate also known as bad bitch, bad news, Savage God, bully, every boy's bitch. Britney had the bad reputation of sleeping with almost all the guys in school

"Look at this, Look who decided to wear a dress and finally feel part of the society," Britney said to her two friends. Laira and Laura the twins always hovering around her, it is like they obey her and do whatever she wants. Laira, Laura, and Britney were the most hated girls in school.

"Back off Britney, Just leave me alone," Josephine said.

“come on Jose, don’t kill the fun,” Laura said.

“Oh Laura, If I were you I will shut up,” Josephine said.

“Jose poor Jose is getting angry,” Lara said.

“Shut the fuck up Bitch.” Josephine shouted.

"Aww, little Jose is mad," Britney said making her sidekicks laugh.

"Fuck you," Josephine said while leaving, She didn't want to try the coaster anymore.

She decided on taking a rest, staying in a quiet place to rest her mind, she spotted a tree, it wasn’t far from the funfair. She sat under the tree, a soft wind passed blew her, she looked up looking at the stars that when she saw it a book in the room covered with some leaves and branches, it wasn’t hard removing the book. The book was large and had beautiful writing on it, a title which wasn’t clear enough, she tried opening the book but all in vain. She put the book in her backpack and headed home.

It felt like someone was whispering to her on her way home, it felt like she was been watched, it felt like he was already there with her. Once she arrived she rushed to her changed her clothes and lay on her bed she kept the book right beside her, she tried opening it again but it couldn’t open. It felt like the book was glued, she tried everything she could remember to open the book but all efforts went in vain. She stared at the book long enough that she thought the book moved.

she was already tired from all the funfair, she decided to drift off to sleep.

Mid-night.

She was sound asleep when the book opened, The pages were old, they had a little bit of sand on them, Some pages were not written clearly. The pages were flipped until they reached a specific page.

The coming of the devil.

Flashback.

Josephine was just three when her father raised his hand to her, he will always say she is bad luck, Josephine never knew why her dad hated her much.

It was fine Friday morning, Josephine was getting ready to leave for school, her mamma was dressing her up, the white shirt looked pretty on her with a blue skirt and blue tie, and her mother was tying her hair into a bun. Her room was bright from all the sunlight, a bed was laid at the center of the room, a small mirror and a chair by the right a small couch towards the other end of the room, and a ceiling fan.

when her dad came in. Josephine looked at him and waved.

“Good morning.” Her mother said to her dad.

“Morning,” he replied. He stared at Josephine she still hasn’t said a word when her mother was done, Josephine stood up to carry her back bag when a hand landed on her cheek. She cried a loud cry.

“You insolent brat, don’t you know how to greet?, enséñale a tu hija algunos modales (Teach your daughter some manners).” Her father shouted.

“She is sorry, it won’t happen again.” Her mother apologized. Josephine lay on the floor still crying, she couldn’t believe her father would do such a thing. He raised a hand at her because she didn’t greet him. She cried until her eyes went sore that day, It was a day she remembers every day, she had no idea he would ever raise a hand on her.
