UNKNOWN

"You know, I have a feeling that you haven't been listening to me," Lucian said to me as we had lunch together.

"Wait. You were talking to me? I didn't realize that," I said.

He rolled his eyes.

"You're thinking about her again," he pointed out.

"It's not like I can help it," I said and he stared at me, amused.

"I'll like to meet her someday."

"Why?" I said, glaring at him.

"I mean, the girl who has always made my boy look like a love sick pup for several years must be special. I want to meet her," he said.

"Just stop talking okay?" I said. "I know I have a bad case of word vomit. It's not as if I can control it. If you were a wordiologist, I could possibly have a chance to control it," he shrugged.

I stared at him, gobsmacked.

"What's a wordi...."

"Wordiologist. A word doctor," he said, looking me dead in the eye.

I choked on my juice.

"Wait, what? Does that word even exist?"

"I might not be a human, but trust me, I know a lot more than you do" he said.

"Whatever you say, professor," I chuckled.

"That's right-"

I froze as a sharp pain invaded my skull. My eyes went wide when I realized what had just happened.

A very alien feeling was the next thing I felt.

Fear.

I was not capable of being afraid. I knew whose emotion it was.

Devon.

She was in trouble.

"You okay? You look like you've just been sucker punched," Lucian said, frowning.

I stood up, my wings stretching out into the air.

"Woah, where the hell are you-"

I winced when I felt pain in my ribs.

"Devon is in trouble, " I said and headed towards the balcony of our apartment.

"Wait, I'm coming with you," Lucian said, his wings outstretched.

We both jumped into the sky, our glamours hiding us from human view.

She was at school, I could tell. We both landed in the school parking lot, our glamours still on. We walked in as I flipped on my hood.

"Are you sure she's in trouble?"

I rolled my eyes, increasing my pace. "I'm not a child, Luke. I felt it."

I moved past several classes.

That was when I saw it.

The aura of a demon.

I cursed under my breath.

"Okay, this is bad," Luke mumbled.

I paused, closing my eyes. I blocked out everything else. I was subconsciously searching for her. My eyes popped open when I found her. So, I began to head for the restroom.

"Okay, We're actually heading to the girl's restroom!" Luke said and I ignored him.

"Did you hear what I just said?"

"Just shut up for once, Luke. You're a major pain in the ass," I groaned, pushing the door open.

"But you love- oh damn it."

My eyes started to glow brightly, rage pulsing through me at the sight of the demon strangling my mate. I threw my dagger at the demon, catching it's attention. It growled, lunging at me. I conjured a bright green ball of energy and the demon reared back. It was trying to outsmart me. Lucian dazed it with jets of lights from his fingers. It slowed down, fangs in full display. It lunged at me again. This time, the ball of energy collided with it and it burst into nothing but black demon ichor.

I rushed to Devon's side. She was unconscious but was still breathing.

"I think we have a problem," Luke said.

"What now?" I groaned, lifting Devon into my arms.

"I don't know why, but a teacher and some female students are heading this way. I think she screamed before she passed out" Luke said. "Well, do something about it" I sighed.

"What do you mean do something about it?"

"Distract them... maybe," I shrugged.

"Uurgh- fine but you owe me one," he said

"Fine," I replied and in a twinkle of an eye, I was in Devon's bedroom with her unconscious form in my arms.

...

  DEVON

I groggily opened my eyes, wincing at the dull throbbing in my head. I gasped when I realized where I was. I was at home, in my bedroom. How was that even possible? I didn't know how I'd gotten to my room because I couldn't remember going home.

"You're awake."

A husky voice said to me from across the room and I sat up immediately.

Mystery guy.

He was here in my room.

I could remember being attacked by a terrifying creature. I could remember passing out.

Mystery guy stepped closer to my bedside. He was wearing some sort of hooded black leather coat and black leather pants.

"W-what happened? How did I get here?" I asked.

He took my hand in his, a bluish smoke appearing around his fingers. He slowly stroked my bruised wrist with his long, elegant fingers. The bruises faded slowly. I stared at him, intrigued.

"I found you in the restroom. The demon was going to kill you," he said. He sounded like he was grieving.

"That thing was a demon?" I asked, a shudder running through me.

"Yes, A demon that had actually possessed a corpse. I had to bring you home," he said, his fingers moving to my rib cage. There was an ugly looking bruise right there. I winced.

He started to do the same thing he'd done with my wrist. "I'm sorry," he said.

"Why? You didn't do anything wrong. You saved me," I said.

He shook his head, a long strand of hair escaping his hood. "You almost died, Devon. If I had been a minute late, I would've lost you," he said.

I sat up, holding his free hand. "You didn't. I'm right here," I said.

He sighed and sat down beside me.

"You don't understand. I don't really know why the demon attacked you. Maybe someone summoned the demon to kill you just to get to me," he said.

I stiffened.

I didn't realize that I was that important to him.

"Maybe, this is a bad idea... maybe I'm actually putting you in danger-"

"If you think that you can scare me with your words, you're wrong. I want to know you. I need to. There's something between us. I can't explain it but I know you can feel it too" I rasped and he inhaled sharply.

"Please do not push me away because of this. Don't keep me in the dark because you think me being in trouble is your fault" I said, lacing my fingers with his.

"You're so stubborn, Dev" he said. I could sense the amusement in his voice. I could tell that he was smiling. "I know. I can always count on you to protect me, right?" I said and he squeezed my hand gently.

"Always" he rasped.

"You should get some rest, Dev" he said, rising to his feet. His black and gold boots looked really shiny.

I held his hand, preventing him from leaving.

"Wait. At least..... tell me your name," I said and he stiffened.

"Dev--"

"Please?"

He let out a sigh.

"Goodness me. Why do you make me feel so powerless. You're very evil," he said and I laughed.

"I'm surprised you're just figuring that out," I said, grinning.

"You should lie down" he suggested and I laid down and closed my eyes, anxiously.

I felt him lean closer, his long hair tickling my skin. He pressed his lips to my forehead and I let out a contented sigh.

"Theo," he whispered. I couldn't feel his presence in my room anymore. I opened my eyes, a smile tugging at my lips.

Theo.

I loved it.

Theo, my mystery guy.

It suited him perfectly.

I closed my eyes and slowly sank into slumber where I dreamt of a certain golden eyed boy named Theo.

  THEO

"Dude, she's hot. You didn't tell me she's smoking hot," Lucian said to me as I took off my coat.

"I didn't know I was supposed to tell you that she's smoking hot," I deadpanned, wrapping up my hair in a bun.

"So, she's never seen your real face before? How d'you manage that?" He said, switching on the TV.

I shrugged.

"Wait until you see her reaction when she sees you. She'll literally pass out at the sight of your unearthly beauty," he teased.

I ignored him.

"Wait, is she a tattoo lover kind of girl? If she is, she'll find your runes very sexy"

I rubbed my temples and plopped down on the couch.

"Seriously-"

"Why can't you stop talking for once?-"

"Well, I can't. Unless you prefer a dumb Lucian," he said, interrupting me. I stared at him, exasperated. He wiped off the humorous look on his face.

"What's wrong?" He asked, looking worried.

"I can't believe I almost lost her today. What would've happened if I didn't feel it?" I said. Lucian's gaze softened.

"I know you're worried that you're doing a bad job at protecting her. But, believe me when I say this. You're wrong. You've protected her since she was ten. You haven't failed at all"

"You don't know that"

"Fine. How about this? I enroll into her school and discreetly watch over her," he said. I sighed, wishing I could do that instead of him. But, I just couldn't risk exposing us to other threats.

"It won't be so bad, huh? Besides, I could do with a little fun," he said.

"Are you sure you can keep an eye on her?"

"Of course, darling. She means a lot to you ergo, she means a lot to me"

"What if it happens again and I-" I closed my eyes, rubbing the back of my neck.

"You're scared" Lucian said and I froze.

"That's it, you're afraid," he said, looking very worried.

My heart sank when I realized that he was right. If I was actually afraid, it wasn't a good thing.

"Come on, take off your shirt," Lucian said and I stared at him with disbelief.

"Stop looking at me like that, you perv. I just want to see your fearless rune" he snickered.

The fearless rune just like every other rune on my body, is a supernatural symbol drawn on my skin. Each rune has it's function. The fearless rune, just as the name implies, makes it impossible for me to fear anything. Due to my position as a guardian, it is necessary to have these runes. There were creatures that preyed on people's fears. Defeating these creatures would mean that we were fearless, hence the need for the fearless rune.

I stood up and took off my shirt. Lucian stood behind me, his finger brushing the fearless rune on my back, just below my shoulders.

"Theo?" He said, a tone of urgency in his voice.

"Yeah?"

"It has been deactivated" he said from behind me.

"That's not possible," I said.

"I'm not joking. Not this time," he said.

"How the hell did that happen?" I said.

"I dunno. This hasn't happened by accident, Theo. Someone out there probably knows your secret and has possibly done this, discreetly" he said as he grabbed his Syll, a small pencil-like structure used to activate and deactivate runes. It was made of silver.

I felt it burn a bit before it faded.

"There, it's activated," he said, pocketing his Syll.

I wasn't listening to him. If he was right and someone else knew my secret, I was definitely in trouble.
