A WIFE FOR YOU

PRESENT

"So now that you've told him everything about yourself, what do we do now?" Mr Morris asked with a little tone of anger.

"I didn't tell him everything about myself, I never knew this was his plan all along," she cried from the floor where she sat.

"You are not getting married to that man, ok?" Her mom assured.

"Really? I hope you are prepared for life in prison. And you know Mateo very well, you know what he can do better," he put in again.

"Dad, I'm not going to marry that man! Never! I have a life to live, I have my future well planned, I can't marry that monster. Did you forget what he did to his first wife?!" She thundered.

He kept silent with his gaze on the floor.

"I can't stand this, we need to find a way to sort this out!" She barked as she stood up hurriedly from the floor and stormed out of the room.

She walked down the dusty road surrounded by large acres of land which were all filled with cocoa trees. It was evening and the sun was beginning to set. Her big red chiffon skirt could be seen swaying from side to side as she walked hastily down the road with tears dripping from her eyes.

She stumbled on Maiden who was walking down the other side of the road with her mother. They seemed like one returning from the farm.

"Alex!" She exclaimed with excitement as she rushed towards her.

"Mai," she called sadly as they both stopped in front of each other.

"Mai, meet me home," Maiden's mother's voice came through from the other side of the road.

"Ok maami," she said as she turned back to Alex.

"What's wrong?" She asked at once.

She wiped the tears off her face again as they both stood in the middle of the road. They could see some of the farmers returning from the farms with their hoes hung on their shoulders.

"I don't know how to say this. I need to see Asa and Bisi before I can speak further," she said.

"Ok, come on, let's go get Bisi. Together we will leave for Asa's home," Maiden suggested and she nodded.

**

"Wait.. you mean, he's asking you to marry his son?" Asa asked in disbelief as she tied the cloth around her chest.

"This is unbelievable. One day we were gossiping about him and another day, you're going to marry him?" Bisi asked in surprise.

Alex kept silent with her chin resting on her palm. They were all seated under the big cocoa tree at Asa's house.

"Of all the girls in the world, why should it be you?" Maiden asked in surprise.

"I don't know! I seriously don't know!. You girls should be advising me on what to do," she cried.

"Well, I will advise you to marry him. He's handsome, he's a billionaire like his father, so you're quite lucky,"Asa said nonchalantly.

"Really?" The other girls chorused in surprise.

"You're forgetting about the man we're talking about here. Adrian, the monster. The woman beater who almost tried to kill his wife," Maiden pointed out.

"And you want Alex to die, right? Don't you know marrying Adrian is the same as death? Or you don't hear the things the other women are saying about him?" Bisi asked.

"I can't believe you're saying this, Asa. You want me to marry a man that would slice me to death! I can't even digest the fact that Mateo Steel is going to be my father in-law! You know how evil those people are! You can see people avoiding the Steels family like a plague!" Alex yelled.

"Well, as long as they're rich, you can cope. You used to like Adrian when you were little, right?" Asa continued.

"Asa!" The girls chorused again.

"That was just mere childish attraction back then! We were just attracted to his handsomeness and nothing more," Bisi pointed out.

"So what are you guys suggesting she do? Let her parents go to prison?" Asa asked.

"Have you told Femi about it?" Maiden asked as she looked at Alex.

"No, I don't know how to break the news to him, it's going to kill him!" She cried.

"I will suggest you speak to him first, maybe he will have a solution to this problem" Bisi suggested.

"Or what do you think?" The girls asked as they looked at Asa. She hissed and looked away.

"Of what use is it? You've got a billionaire husband coming for you, why don't you let Femi be?" She asked at once.

"Are you ok?" Alex thundered as she stood up.

"Babe, let her be. Come on, it's dark. You need to visit Femi," Maiden suggested.

**

As she walked into the dark yard, she could see him walking out of the house. She stood beside the mango tree in the yard as she saw his broad figure approaching her.

"Ife mi"(my love) his brass voice came through as he walked closer to her, wearing only native shorts over his unclad chest.

As he held her soft smooth palms, she giggled as she stood before his huge body. She couldn't seem to get enough of the man she had come to love over the months.

"Where have you been all day?" He asked.

"I've been home. The day has been bad," she said sadly as she looked away from him.

"Ife mi, speak to me, what's wrong?" He urged as he placed a palm on her cheek.

"I don't know how to say this," she cried.

He held her close to himself and raised her face towards his.

"Speak to me, you're making me scared," he said, anxiously.

"It's Mr..Mr Steel," she cried.

"What did he do this time around?" He thundered.

"You know about the debt my parents owe him," she said as she wiped the tears off her face.

"Yes," he said impatiently.

"He..he wants a repayment and it's beyond our means to pay back" she continued.

"And now, he's asking that I marry his son for the debt to be cleared off,” she spilled.

Silence fell in and he shifted away from her.

"He said that?" He asked in dismay and she nodded.

"He is sick! That man is sick! He thinks because he owns this village makes him the owner of everything in it?!" He barked.

"Lower your voice, Femi," she urged as she walked towards him and held his hand.

"No! He shouldn't dare me! He can't take what belongs to me!" He continued to vent.

"We should be thinking of a solution and not this venting!" She cried.

He kept silent and began to pant.

"There are other girls out there. There are other rich girls out there. Why should he be interested in you?!" He continued.

"I don't know! Femi, I don't know!" She cried.

He kept silent again and stood before her.

"What are the consequences?" He asked.

"He says my parents will go to prison. They signed an agreement on the day the loan was taken" she explained.

"Look, we need to run away or something, we need to go away from this place. I can't let you marry into that wicked family. I can't let you marry that monster!" He cried with his whole body shaking violently.

"If you had come to pay my bride price on time, all this wouldn't have happened. I would have been married to you by now," she cried.

"Look, I don't think there is any way out of this than eloping," he continued.

"And then I'll watch my parents go to prison?" She asked.

"And so you want to marry him?!" He barked.

She kept silent and walked away from him.

"I can't watch my parents go to prison!" She yelled.

"Oh really, you want to marry him, right? Because he is Rich? Yes, because he is a billionaire?" He asked angrily.

"Stop it! I don't want to marry him! What woman on earth would want to marry a man like him!" She yelled.

"So let's run away," he said as he grabbed hold of her hands.

She pulled them away and let out a sigh.

"What about my parents?" She asked tenderly and he kept silent.

"Alex, you and I have been together for almost a year now, and you think I will just let you walk away from my life?" He asked.

"I don't want to walk away from your life," she cried as she rushed back to him and hugged him tightly.

As they both held each other tightly, he raised her face towards his and planted a deep kiss on her soft full lips.

"I love you,Lex," he whispered.

"I love you too, ife mi," she whispered back.

He tried to kiss her again but she refrained and pulled away from him.

"What?" He gruntled.

"I..I need to go home now," she said.

"When are you going to let me in?" He asked softly as he caressed her palms.

"Come and pay my bride price," she said sternly.

"I'm working on it, and now this marriage saga came up," he said with a frown.

"I need to go home. I need to clear my head," she said as she walked away from him.

He sighed and licked his lips as he watched her walk out of the yard.

**

The sound of his black Oxford shoes could be heard as he walked majestically into the lavish and luxurious penthouse which was all lit up that night. The men at the entrance made a slight bow as they watched him walk in.

He kept a straight face with no smile detected as he walked to the ashes coloured round couch where he could see the old man drinking and vibing to the afrobeat music, playing in the background.

“Son,” he heard the old man’s voice as he walked closer to him.

“What did you do?” He asked with a strong tone as his handsome oblong face stared at his father who was sitting excitedly on the couch.

“I’m getting a wife for you,” the old man replied nonchalantly as he took a sip from his expensive J&R wine.

“And does it have to be Morrrison’s daughter? The peasant?” He asked again, with his deep brown eyes filled with fury.

Mateo chuckled as he raised his head to look at his son.

“Sit,” he offered in a low tone.

“I didn’t come all the way here to sit and drink. I’ve got a lot in my hands right now,” he said impatiently as he looked away from his father.

“Sit,” Mateo’s voice sounded again, this time, with authority.

He sighed and licked his lips before settling on the couch. He adjusted the collar of his royal black suit before crossing his legs stylishly.

He focused his eyes on the 63 inches plasma playing in the room, as one of the men poured drink into the glass in front of him.

“What’s up your sleeves this time around?” He asked grumpily with his eyes on his father.

A smile appeared on Mateo’s face as he looked at the side of his face.

“Good question,” he said as he took a sip from his drink again.

“Do you bother to know the reason for your failed marriage with Barbara?” He asked.

He kept silent and took a sip from his drink.

“Well, since you don’t know, I'll lecture you,” he said with a crooked smile on his lips as he looked at his son whose eyes were still fixed on the tv.

"Your marriage with Barbara failed because she was from a rich background just like you. You lost your dominance over her, you lost the will to control her, you lost the power to tame her," he said seriously.

He turned to look at his father as he heard those words and he pulled a long face.

"Look Adrian, I don't know what happened back then between you both, but from what I saw, Barbara was dominating you, unlike what she made the public see about you.

And during the years, I've brought you countless ladies from affluent homes for you to marry, but they all ended up leaving when they couldn't withstand your mean self anymore.

And you know why they were able to leave so freely?" He asked as he looked at his son who was listening attentively with his gaze on the floor.

"They left easily because there was nothing binding them to you," he said and let out a chuckle.

As he heard those words, he turned slowly to look at his father who was taking a sip from his drink. He was beginning to understand where the old man was coming from.

"Yes, there was nothing binding them to you. And then, when I came across Morrison's daughter at the farm, an idea struck me. I knew this was the only way I could get you a wife who would never run away like the others. She wouldn't want her parents to go to prison, and she will have no option but to stay, and endure your menace," he said with an evil grin.

He let out a sigh and looked away from his father.

"And you think, the debt will force her to stay?" He asked thoughtfully.

"Definitely. She has no other option," Mateo said with a chuckle.

He shook his head in disbelief as he looked at his father again.

"I can't believe you're doing this! Look, I don't care what you stand to gain from all this! But I'm never getting married to that peasant! Are you trying to mock me or something?!" He asked angrily.

"You seem like a man with an empty brain, don't you? Take a look at yourself Adrian, you're 31 already. Though handsome, with great body physiques, all the women out there are avoiding you like a plague" Mateo stressed as he looked at his son who kept silent with his hand tapping the couch angrily.

"I'm trying to help you get out of this miserable life of yours," he continued.

"And how is a peasant girl gonna help me out of this miserable life, as you called it?!" He snapped.

Mateo burst into laughter. He leaned his back on the sofa as he looked at him with a smile on his face.

"You don't know what you'll find unless you try. You see, the peasant girl as you called her, might be far better than those rich ladies you've come across. She's beautiful in case you haven't seen her. Curvy, with spotless brown skin," He made emphasis with his hand.

"Then why don't you take her as a wife instead?" He asked as he looked at his father with disdain.

"Oh, I wish I was still a boy, I would have taken her as my wife. You know, if I had married one of those peasants back then, my life would have been far better than it is now," he said.

He chuckled and took a sip from his drink as he looked at his father again.

"You know the reason I'm doing this Adrian? It's not because of my love for you. No, the father and son love that we once shared died a long time ago," Mateo continued.

He let out a sigh as he heard his father speak. His face became hardened and he felt the urge to leave at once.

"I'm doing all this because I need a grandson. I need an heir for the Steel's family. And from what I'm seeing, you're not prepared to give me one just yet," he continued.

"I can get you one through surrogacy. I don't wanna be involved in anything called marriage!" He thundered.

"Surrogacy? Adrian, I'm a full Yoruba man and I didn't have you through surrogacy, why will you get me a son through one?" He asked seriously.

"I guess if you had gotten me through surrogacy, it would have been better than your miserable marriage with Amelia!" He slammed.

Mateo chuckled and a wry smile appeared on his lips as he tried to remain calm.

"Amelia, your mother" he said with a smile as he rubbed his palm on his chin. "Well, that is why I'm getting you a woman who would be far better than the women we've come across in our lives," he explained.

"Do you think any woman is better?" He scoffed.

"She will be better. Look here, son," he said as he turned to face him.

"As soon as she bears you a son, she will be sent away. That's the plan. I wasn't planning to keep her in the Steel's family forever," he spilled.

He kept silent as he heard those words. They seemed appealing though, he thought.

"And what if she doesn't bear me a son?" He asked.

"She will," he assured with a grin.

He let out a sigh and looked away.

"When are you planning for the rites to take place?" He asked as he heaved a sigh.

"I gave them seven days to make a decision. After the seven days, we will hit the village and take home your bride" he said with a smirk.

"Against their wish?" He asked in disbelief.

"Everything, including everyone in the whole of the cocoa village, belongs to me!" He said with authority as he let out an evil laughter.

He stood up and looked at his father.

"You know I will never be in support of this. I beg to take my leave now," he said as he took a final sip from his drink, and stormed out of the Penthouse with his feet stomping the ground with power.
