Chapter 11 I’ve Done Nothing Wrong

So many years have gone by and she was tired of saying this. It was the only truth she had left.

“Everly Pettis! We have all the evidence that you killed my sister. This is the truth! They sentenced you to ten years back then and sneaking out like this is basically prison break!”

Lisa’s shrill voice rang out, “Carson told me all about you. I promised him that I wouldn’t sue you if you admitted that you were wrong and were willing to learn from your mistakes. Or else, you can rot in prison for the rest of your life!”

“I’ve done nothing wrong.” Her gaze was unfocused as she repeated that line, just as she did countless times over the past four years.

“You!”

Lisa grabbed her and tried to hit her but stopped just before she touched Everly’s face. She threw Everly against the wall. Everly watched as Lisa cried toward the person who stood coldly to one side, observing everything.

“I’m sorry, Carson. I… As soon as I think about my sister…”

Everly watched as Lisa’s tears fell onto his arms. She saw that he did not move to dodge her and watched as he patted Lisa’s shoulder comfortingly the way he used to do to her many years before.

That was the tenderness he used to show her. It was also the tenderness that she could not attain at this moment.

“Apologize!” His eyes, filled with a cold fury, met her. Everly’s heart ached once again. She hated that her heart was still aching for him.

“I’ve done nothing wrong.” She repeated this again and again.

Lisa’s sobbing grew louder. He also looked like he was about to lose his temper. Carson gripped her shoulders violently. His thin lips parted and closed as if he were saying something. However, Everly’s ears were ringing and she could not hear a thing.

He asked her once more furiously. She could not bear it anymore. Everything went dark before her and she fell to the ground with a thud.

He looked at her coldly. “Get up!” He said icily.

There was no response from Everly.

“Everly, you’ve pulled this stunt too many times! I won’t be fooled!” His anger grew as he shook her constantly. However, it was burning hot when he brushed against her face.

“Sir, Miss Pettis has lost a lot of blood. I think there’s something wrong with her.” The butler’s worried voice rang out before behind.

Carson was about to carry her up subconsciously, but…

“Carson…”

Lisa’s choked-up voice rang out. He turned and saw Lisa’s tears. Cason was stunned in place. After about three seconds, he paid Everly, who laid on the ground, no attention; instead, he comforted Lisa, saying, “Don’t cry. I’ll send you home.”

“Sir. Miss Pettis here…” said the butler hesitatingly.

“Just send her to the hospital. Don’t let her die.” He casually muttered those words and left with Lisa without sparing Everly a second look.

The butler watched after them then turned to glance at Everly, who laid unconscious on the ground. He shook his head and gave a long sigh.

It was bright outside when Everly regained consciousness. The cool light of the winter sun shone in through the curtains causing her to squint as she stared at the white ceiling. For a moment, she did not know where she was.

The air was filled with the smell of disinfectant. She looked at her hands. They had been bandaged. There was also a drip connected to her left hand.

This was a hospital.

The memories from before ravaged her mind. Everything that occurred in the Baxter Residence terrified her. Her heart beat like a drum. She subconsciously stroked the inner pocket of her black padded jacket. Her rapidly beating heart calmed down slightly. Thank goodness, the money was still there.

She let out a breath of relief and looked at the needle at the back of her hand. She gritted her teeth then yanked the needle out, ignoring the stinging pain and the blood pouring out of the back of her hand as she stumbled to get out of this place.

The cold air outside was freezing and made her shiver. The chill seemed to seep into her bones and forced her to stop. The warmth in the room and the cold here made for a drastic contrast as though stepping back was like his warmth while pressing ahead was like his coldness.

She lowered her head slightly.

His warmth no longer belonged to her.

It was beginning to snow again. She pursed her lips tightly, shut her eyes, and erased everything related to him from her mind. She braved the wind and snow, walking into the white landscape ahead.
