Chapter 12 The Last Warmth

The snow was getting heavier and heavier. Everly walked down the long alley and headed towards Granny Preston’s place again.

In the beginning, she just wanted to take care of Granny Preston for Bonnie. However, as time passed, she had somewhat become the pillar of support for Everly.

She had no home anymore, and she had nothing more than this borrowed life. The dilapidated but lit house was like a lamp for her, sustaining the last warmth in her heart.

She squeezed the money in her hand, and the corner of her lips curved slightly. She breathed a breath of white mist amidst the icy cold air. Hastily, she moved to the back of the alley and craned her neck quietly. She wanted to stuff the money through the crack of the door as before, but she found that the door was wide open this time.

Moreover, she saw a pair of feet!

It was Granny Preston!

She was lying on the ground unconscious!

“Granny!” She did not care much and ran directly towards Granny Preston. Everly shook her body slightly, but there was no response.

It was cold everywhere within reach, but when Everly extended a hand to touch Granny Preston’s forehead, it was burning!

In Baxter residence.

“Where’s she?” Carson, in the study, was on the verge of berserk. His voice was filled with suppressed anger. “It’s been so long, haven’t you found her yet?”

He had heard that she had escaped from the hospital in the afternoon. He demanded his people to search for her, but there was still no news!

It was already dark outside, where could she go?

“I’m sorry…” the butler said tremblingly, “I’ve already searched the place she worked before, and the place she stayed, but we didn’t find her, and now…”

The butler hesitated.

“Shoot!” Carson berated.

“Cannesville is so big, Miss Pettis doesn’t have the money to stay in a hotel, and she is still ill. She may faint anywhere on such a cold day…” The anger emitting from deep within Carson intensified, and the butler’s voice got softer and softer, to the point that it was barely audible.

“Find her!” He yelled, “Leave no stone unturned and find her!”

“Yes!”

The butler hurried to make further arrangements, leaving Carson alone in the study, writhing angrily.

He swept everything on the table down to the floor with a loud bang. He clenched his fist, and blood seeped through the wound, dripping down slowly.

Anger. Unstoppable anger was churning out of control, torturing him constantly, making him lose his usual calm and cool demeanor. He was on the brink of going crazy.

He hated this feeling!

On the avenue outside of the hospital.

Everly was walking on the road, and the doctor’s words were still ringing in her ears, “The high fever was caused by kidney failure, and it was deadly. It needs to be treated quickly. Dialysis can only delay the effect, and it’s best to have a kidney transplant.”

Bonnie had already sacrificed herself for her, and she could not live for long either. Her biological parents had abandoned her, and she fell in love with the wrong person. What she had cherished and wanted to protect were all gone.

Now she was barely alive, only with the last warmth supporting her.

Even if it meant to cost her her life, she must protect that final scrap of warmth!

It was cold at night in Cannesville. She raised her gaze slightly, and the dark night sky was adorned with pieces of falling snowflakes. It should have been a beautiful scene to behold, but it was only a catalyst to claim her life.

She cried suddenly. She fell to the ground and cried hysterically.

The heavy snow in the sky wrapped her as if she was a snowman, making her tremble with the cold. She lost track of time, and when she felt that the snow had finally stopped, she looked up and saw that a pair of dark eyes were staring back at her.

It was him. He was holding an umbrella, standing in front of her. The snow was still falling, and he sheltered her under the umbrella with his gaze fixed on her.

Something seemed to hit her heart hard.

A fatal blow it was.
