Chapter 3: Ambroise Family

It has been three days since then the incident had happened. Trust me when I told myself to forget about it. I couldn’t. I couldn’t help but feel bothered by the necklace.

I stood in front of a memorial picture of my sister, who looked exactly like me when I was younger. I removed the necklace off my neck and placed it in front of her.

“Just what is this?” I asked her.

The young girl brightly smiling in the picture was my older sister, Hannah Ambroise. Since we’re siblings, it’s natural to look like each other.

I stared at the necklace and wondered why it was so important that even strangers asked me about it. I haven’t heard from father since he hasn’t been home. The same goes for my mother.

Well, without them, I don’t think I can live a luxurious life. But they’re lucky I don’t like spending their money. Since it feels like I’m wasting their hard work, spending on useless things.

We don’t have a close family relationship. But that day when I woke up. I saw my mother’s eyes filled with tears. While my father couldn’t hide his angered expression.

At one point, I know they care about me. But they’re too busy to play with me. I guess you can say it’s lonely living in such a huge house. Every time I close my eyes. I don’t hear anything but silence. But this is enough for me.

“Hannah, I wish you were alive. I’m not blaming you, but I want to be happy around my parents. If you were me. What would you have done?”

It was a Monday. Yet I decided not to go to school. The impact from Friday night still scared me. To add, I wouldn’t know how to act around them.

Even if we see each other almost every day. Joshua and Wayne are in the same class as I am. That time when Micah asked me about those two. Of course, I knew them. I was just lying around her.

“Young Miss, the Master has returned,” said a maid who had her head lowered.

“Thank you for informing me.” Just in time. I was starting to get hungry for answers.

I made my way to my father’s office, and before entering, I knocked on the door. When I heard his acknowledgment, I entered the room, seeing him massaging his temples. Seeing him exhausted, I hesitated to ask him. There might be time to ask next time.

“Sofia is there anything you want?” asked my father.

Harrison Ambroise. A well-known businessman in the whole world. No one dares to fight him, which shows how powerful a man he is. I don’t know what kind of business he does, but I’m sure it’s legal.

I forced a smile on my lips and said, “I just wanted to greet you. That’s it.” Father wouldn’t care anyway. I bet he won’t know I want something from him.

“I heard that you went to a nightclub. How was it?” He asked, sighing for the nth time. Judging from his looks. He does seem exhausted.

“I had fun,” I lied once more, which tasted bitter.

“Nothing happened?” Asked father as his brows knotted.

“Nothing.”

“I see….” paused father. “Sofia, if you need anything, tell it to me or your mom. Or you can just ask someone in this house to get it for you.”

I nodded my head and went with the flow. The truth is my chest felt heavy. I wanted to ask, but it doesn’t seem like the right time. Father looks exhausted. It’s better if he gets some rest.

“Don’t worry about me. I’m rather worried about you,” I walked up to the table and poured him a cup of water.

“Thank you. Indeed, something troublesome happened. It has been stuck in my head for a while,” answered my father.

“In the company? What might have gone wrong?” I curiously asked him, but he didn’t answer.

“Today is a Monday. It’s just afternoon. You didn’t go to school?” Asked father, and I lowered my head out of guilt.

“I apologize.”

“It’s alright. I didn’t say that you have to go to school. As long as you are comfortable being home rather than in school. It’s alright.”

There were times when I felt that my father was distant and cold towards me. But there are times like this that fill my heart with warmth. This is why I have not once resented my parents. I concluded that they just didn’t know how to express themselves.

“What about mother?” I asked father, and he laughed out loud out of nowhere.

“Oh, your mom keeps calling me. Saying she doesn’t want to deal with this customer. But in the end, she did it.”

“I haven’t seen her in a while,” I placed both of my hands in front of me.

“She’ll return soon. I miss her as much as you do.”

My mother, whose job I don’t know what is, has been traveling around the world like a madwoman. If you were to ask whom I’m closer with. I’ll answer my father. My mother loves me but tends to forget her own daughter.

But it’s alright. Since I don’t think she had completely forgotten about me. As every month she would send gifts to me.

This house doesn’t seem warm from the outside. But it’s warmer than what others think. The Ambroise family may not always be together. But their hearts are always one.

That is what I read in my sister’s diary. It seems like Hannah was lonely at one point. But she had her own group of friends. So she was fine.

“Sofia, do you want to eat early dinner with me?” Asked my father. “To tell the truth. I want to eat a meal with you.”

“Of course. I would gladly take your offer,” I giggled at my dad, who struggled to stand up. I guess old age has finally hit him.
