Maxwell and I drove in silence. My heart was heavy. It was hard leaving my mate and children, but it was necessary. As long as Grigory was still out there, we could never indeed be free. Ruby had cried when I talked about death; her tears and apprehension were motivation enough not to tell her what I truly intended to do. I just have to hope for the best and pray that we succeed. As strong as I knew she was, she wasn't lying when she said she would follow me to the grave. She meant every word. We have to win at all costs, even if we have to cheat. It was imperative.

"Ruby will kill you when she finds out the truth," Maxwell said, and I sighed because it was true – Ruby would kill me.

"I did not tell my wife either," Maxwell said, and I sighed, grateful that Noelle won't crack and tell Ruby what we were up to.

"You need to be careful, Jasper. You are a good man, and good people hardly win. You have to be selfish, wicked, mean, and want everything for you
