Chapter Four

"Oh, you're still here... you're not going to work?"

I turned around when I heard Eugene's voice and the bedroom door closing. I give him a friendly smile.

"I need to go to the hospital; Gail is about to give birth, and I need to monitor her," I said, placing the food I had prepared for Gail.

Gail is the woman who is carrying Eugene's child. I've been with her since Eugene and I decided to take care of the child. The two are still not talking and they haven't seen each other since their encounter at the Company.

I'm not sure if Eugene is still angry at Gail, everytime I tried to make him come with me to visit Gail he always makes a alibi so he can't go with me. Maybe he still can't accept Gail's decision and he's not ready to face her yet. I just kept quiet and do what I can to help them, specialty Gail who's now in the Hospital.

I'm not sure if Eugene is still angry at Gail, but every time I try to convince him to accompany me to visit Gail, he always comes up with an excuse why he can't. Perhaps he still finds it difficult to accept Gail's decision to abandon the child.

I just kept quiet and did what I could to help and support them, especially Gail, who is now in the hospital.

"Do you have any meetings today?" I asked as I handed him a cup of coffee.

"Yeah, there are things needed to discuss in the upcoming projects," he replied before sipping his coffee.

"I'll try to get to the office after I see Gail," I respond, sighing as I notice his crumpled suit and rumpled tie.

It's always been like this. He might go to work in a crumpled suit if I'm not here.

"Thank you," he said sincerely, and when I lifted my head, I saw his eyes, that are fixed on me.

After a few seconds of staring at him, I feel a little awkward; my heart is also beating strangely because of how intense his stare is. So, when I noticed he'd finished his coffee, I shoved him in the face and took the cup from him.

"I'm tired of hearing your thank yous now, Eugene; you don't need to thank me every day," I laughed to lighten the mood.

But it's true; he hasn't stopped thanking me since we moved here and I began caring for her ex-lover.

I'm enjoying what I'm doing. Besides, I had a great time taking care of Gail, and it made me happy to see the baby grow in her tummy.

"I'll thank you every day, even if you get tired of hearing it," he says as he pulls me in for a hug that generates my heart rate up.

After a while, I hugged him back; Eugene has a childish attitude like this, he enjoys hugging, he's clingy and demanding like a child... But I don't despise it; in fact, I find it charming—damn, Laura, stop thinking like that.

I shake my head to clear my mind before looking at him. But the moment I lifted my eyes to look at him, I burst out laughing when I saw how his lips were cutely pouting. I jokingly hit his cheeks and pushed him away.

"You know you need to stop acting like a baby now, we're about to have a real baby, please have a shame to your child haha," I had to stop laughing when I noticed how serious his expression was.

"That's why I'm enjoying this moment; when our child arrives, I'll have a competitor for your attention," he said softly.

"Come on, go to work already. You don't have a secretary for today, and you still have a meeting. I'll come in later for lunch, and I'll bring you dinner." I shoved him out of the unit.

"OK, I'll leave now; please be careful on your way to the hospital, okay?"

"Yeah, bye," I said as I closed the door, despite the fact that he was still saying goodbye to me.

I need to do that to put an end to his never-ending goodbyes.

When my phone rang, I turned to look at it. There are two messages. Eugene is the first name I saw, so that's the one I open first.

[Please be careful on your way to the hospital, call me from time to time, and don't get too tired.]

I simply responded to his messages with a simple K and then opened the second message.

[She's about to give birth.] that's the message from the hospital.

After reading that, I quickly dressed and went into the living room to gather the Baby's belongings. Because of my panic, I was unable to text Eugene right away. I'm not sure what I'm going to feel; I'm excited but also concerned for the baby's and Gail's safety. I hope nothing bad happens to them.

Almost everyone I see as I exit the building is staring at me; perhaps they're all wondering why I'm wearing a worried expression and carrying so many bags. I just ignore them all and walk as fast as I can.

When I arrived at my car, which was waiting for me at the building's entrance, I immediately put my bags inside before rushing to the driver's seat.

"Thank you," I hurriedly said to the male staff who had prepared my car before hurrying inside.

"Be careful, Ma'am," was the last thing I heard before pulling over.

When I arrived at the hospital, Doctora Pia greeted me and immediately escorted me to where Gail is. Before entering the room, I put on a hospital gown. When I heard and saw Gail screaming in pain, I instantly gasped.

Is childbirth really that painful?

My hand is trembling from nervousness. I look at the Doctor, who is checking on Gail's condition.

"Is she okay, Doc?" my voice trembles with fear.

Gail's face is covered in sweat and tears, and her entire face is turning red from the pain.

"She's fine," the doctor simply stated.

I don't know what to do, I don't know what I can do to help Gail feel less pain. My eyes are welling up with tears as I look at her and see her smile at me.

"Don't worry, I'm fine; the baby is so excited to meet us," she said, her brow wrinkled from pain.

"Shh, don't talk in case it causes you more pain. You're doing great, Gail, you're doing great," my tears well up in my eyes. "You can do it. I'm here... don't be afraid." I tighten my grip on her hand to support her.

"Hmm, t-thank you... " tears flowed up in her eyes as she yelled again.

Gail and I are both fine. I began caring for her when she was six months pregnant. We are not officially friends, but I can say that we have a good relationship. We just don't get along when I ask her why she has to leave Eugene and her child. I always tell her that leaving Eugene and the baby will hurt them, but we end up fighting because she is so determined to leave them.

I got tired of asking her, if that's what she really wants, it's fine, I'm here to look after the baby.

"Does Eugene know?" she asked. The nurse injected her with something.

"Ah, not yet. Wait a minute, I'll just message him," I said as I walked out the door and dialed Eugene's number.

I forgot to inform him because all I could think about earlier was getting here in an instant.

While I waited for him to answer my call, I overheard the doctor say that Gail is only a few minutes away from giving birth.

"Laura? Something wrong? Where are you?" he asked as soon as he picked up the phone.

"Come here to the hospital, Gail is about to give birth," I say, smiling as I hear him curse in panic and excitement.

"I'm on my way," he said loudly.

"Drive carefully," I remind him. I can hear his rapid breathing when he's starting to run.

I hung up the phone when I heard her car's engine start up; he's really quick to get into his car.

When I returned to the room, I noticed Gail was having trouble in breathing, but when she looked at me, she smiled brightly hiding it to me.

When I told her Eugene was on his way, all she did was nod.

I wipe her sweat away with a clean tissue while tightly gripping her hand. Even though I haven't given birth, I can feel her suffering. Just looking at her causes me to wince in pain.

After a few minutes, the Doctor entered the room.

"Are you ready Gail?" the doctor asked as she positioned herself below Gail.

Gail nodded hesitantly. I tightened my grip on her hand to encourage her. I could feel both of us shivering from nervousness and nervousness.

But I know gail feels worse now. It's really not a joke to give birth.

"Okay Gail Inhale, Exhale, Inhale, push slowly first .. You already know this, you've already practiced it. Do what I taught you. Okay .."

"It hurts," Gail cried out in pain.

I couldn't help but whisper to her that she could do it, that she should be brave, that she was doing well...even though I, myself seemed to be fainting right now.
