Eliza's Breakfast

Ash poured me a cup of coffee and placed it in front of me. It was oddly entertaining watching the deadly demon making me breakfast like a normal husband would on a Sunday morning. I was certain he’d feast on human flesh or hearts freshly ripped from poor souls, but he sat down next to me and began pouring syrup on his homemade pancakes. We were playing house in the cottage by the sea, pretending that Hell wasn’t at our feet, threatening us as we salted our scrambled eggs.

“Wait, so let me get this straight, some land belongs to the demons and some land belongs to the angels?” I asked Ash.

“And then some land belongs to no one and is free for all to wonder.” He explained to me, but I still couldn’t understand.

“Okay, but demons can’t go onto angel territory, or they…”

“They burn internally until eventually they go up in flames and die. And vise versa.”

“But humans?”

“Humans can go onto any of the territories without harm. This was all part of a treaty between the Heavens and the Hells over a thousand years ago.” He added more syrup to his pancakes, and I wondered if all demons had such a sweet tooth.

“This land, the land we’re on now, who’s territory is this?” I asked.

“We are on human grounds. It belongs to everyone, which makes it harder for anyone to track us.”

“But the…” I hesitated to even say the word. “The Devil can find us anywhere.”

“It’s not the Devil tracking us. If that was the case, we’d be dead. No, the Devil has no idea about any of this. It’s only Onx and his men.” Ash sighed as he thought about the grim situation.

“Why though? Why does this Onx care about me or you or any of this?”

“He has his reasons,” Ash said. “But that’s another story for another time.”

I thought about pushing the question further, but the look in his eyes let me know that it wasn’t something he wanted to talk about. Instead, I began picking at my plate.

“And then, of course, there are the cursed lands.” Ash began telling me, the concerning look in his eyes now fading as he went back to discussing the territories. “The cursed lands belong to no one and neither demons nor angels have powers there. We call these lands The Forbiddens because that is where most banished angels and demons go to live after being cast out. They are stripped of their powers, so they go to live where no one can have powers and they can more of a chance at survival if they are attacked.”

“Do you know people there?” I asked him.

“I know many people there; some I’ve banished myself.” A smirk came across his face like he enjoyed the memory of casting out some of his own kind.

“Okay, well now what?” I dropped my fork, unable to eat as I thought about being chased by demons, actual evil bloodthirsty demons. “What do we do now? Sit around here for the rest of my life?”

“Of course not. Onx will catch up to us soon. The only reason he hasn’t yet is because he hasn’t been able to break the wall inside my head to see my thoughts yet.” Ash said it so nonchalantly.

“He can read your thoughts?” I shook my head, exhausted by the draining feeling that we’d never be able to get away from this guy.

“Onx and I are linked. We can see into each other’s minds. I had a witch use her magic to blur the visions, but it won’t keep the thought blurry for much longer.” Ash told me. “Soon, her magic will wear off and he’ll be able to see into my head clearly.”

“Witch? Mind linked?” I stood up and went to the window, staring out at the magnificent ocean as a dark cloud stirred above it, hovering over it like a reminder that even the most beautiful sight can be ruined by darkness at any moment. “I’m never going to survive this, am I?”

“I won’t allow him to harm you. I won’t allow anyone to hurt you. Right now, it’s only Onx and his men that are after us. He knows we’ve bonded; he would’ve seen that by now, but I still can’t explain how we bonded. It’s…impossible. So, we have to find answers to know what to do. Until I know exactly what’s going on, I don’t know how to help besides fighting anyone that dares come your way.”

“And how do we find answers?”

“I know someone, an angel. He’s got lots of friends in many places and he may know more about it. Besides, he owes me a favor.” Ash stood up and walked over to me. His warm arms embraced me, and the sizzling sensation radiated from my heart to between my thighs. “It’s the bond.” He laughed.

“What?” I asked him.

“That sizzling sensation you feel scorching through your body, it’s the bond between us that you are feeling.”

“Get out of my head!” I rolled my eyes at him, annoyed with the fact that he could read my thoughts at any moment. “Don’t you think it’s rude to pop into people’s heads like that?”

“No.” He shrugged as though he didn’t care at all about having manners. “It’s actually quite fun. You see, everyone has thoughts in the back of their mind that even they push so far back there that they forget they exist. Secrets, regrets, desires. It’s like a maze to make my way into there, but the challenge is intriguing, and I enjoy finding what people like to hide from even themselves.”

“I don’t have secrets,” I told him. “I have nothing to hide.”

His crooked smile curved up into an evil grin and I wondered if he knew something from my mind already or if he was happy at the thought of the challenge of mazing through my mind for secrets.

“Don’t,” I warned him. “It’s impolite.”

“Fine. I’ll hold back, for now.” He said.

“Good.” I got up and went to the kitchen counter to pour myself another cup of coffee. “It feels so sleazy for you to look into my mind like that. It’s like looking up my skirt.”

“Oh, I’d love to do that as well.” Ash raised his eyebrows at the thought and my cheeks reddened as I felt a tingle at the thought of him going up my skirt. He smiled as he read my mind and I shook my head, irked at his power.

I stared out the window as I sipped my coffee, admiring the ocean view. The same view that I had once shared with my parents so long ago. The memory had so often made me question myself. It was such a beautiful memory that I often wondered if I had made it up in my own head. My parents had been dead so long that very few memories were even left behind. I was so young when they passed, and life seemed to turn upside down once they had gone.

A group of people walked down the beach and I watched them, wondering if they were family making memories as we had once done long ago. Brothers, maybe they were brothers and sharing a memorable vacation together on the lovely shores.

“Brothers?” Ash stood up from behind, obviously reacting to my thought that he was reading from my mind. I started to scold him for staying in my head, but he rushed over to the window with urgency before I had a second to speak. “Where do you see them?”

“Right there. What’s wrong?” I tried to look out the window again, but his large body was taking up the whole area.

“Damn it.” Ash grabbed onto me and pulled me to him. “It’s Onx and his men. They’ve found us.”

I peeked around him and saw a glimpse of the men as they were getting closer to the cottage. The men didn’t seem to know we were inside, as they searched the area. I couldn’t see their faces, but I could see that one of the men was so much taller and more muscular than the others.

“The witch’s magic is wearing off, but not enough that he knows exactly where we are.” His arms tightened around me. “We’re leaving now.”

The world around me went black and it felt like a tornado was spinning around our bodies. I kept my eyes closed and pushed my face into his chest, knowing that as long as I was with Ash, I would be safe wherever we ended up.
