PROLOGUE:

"The Rogue Alpha has taken over more than half of the packs. He alone owns more land and leads more warriors than we and our allies combined." My father slumps in the chair as a loud, frustrated groan leaves his lips.

When I took over the pack, I was sure he'd get the rest he deserved, but I was wrong. The grey has replaced his once brown hair, and the laugh lines around his eyes have turned into waves of wrinkles. He has lost so much weight that I almost don't recognise my own father now that he is no longer a massive wall of muscle.

I reach for the whiskey bottle and fill his glass, "There are two kinds of wolves, father, those who lead and those who follow. I come from a long line of Alphas; what makes him think I'd ever follow another Alpha? A rogue at that. We will keep fighting."

I wish my words could reassure him, but not even I believe them. That man, whoever he is, has been causing trouble for some time, but in the last three months, he has managed to build an army and take over pack after pack.

Every pack falls at his feet, no matter how great their fighting spirit might be. It's like he's an actual God everyone worships as soon as they face him. I still think of him as a criminal who is too greedy to stop grabbing whatever is within his reach. One might think he'd stop by now, but he hasn't stopped yet, and I'm sure he won't stop until he rules over everyone like a mad King.

"Son, if you want to save the pack, we have to admit defeat. Unless we comply with his demands..." I hand my father the glass just as he gulps and averts his eyes. Following his lead, I sit down and wait for him to speak again. "I'm afraid many, if not all, will fall."

I stare at the painting on my office wall. It's one of my father, mother, and me. That's exactly why I should keep fighting- so many families rely on me and my decisions. "From what I've heard, I'm almost certain his ego will kill him."

"A man can dream." Father chuckles and brings the glass to his lips.

Groaning, I get back up and walk to the window. If I don't address the elephant in the room, we'll lose ourselves in the comfort the silence might offer. "When will he come?"

"In two days."

Two days isn't enough to prepare weapons and our army. We need at least four days, ideally five.

Besides, I should think of a defence plan, especially for those who can't fight. I can't help but grow frustrated. All this information falls on me like an unexpected blizzard.

How can I make the right decision, do the right thing if I don't have enough time to think about the possibilities and risks?

After a moment of silence, I give in, "And what does this change for our pack? For you? And for me?"

"Everything; it changes everything, but we must embrace it if we want to save our people. I'm not sure what his plan is for me, but for you..." He cuts himself off.

I turn around to look at him. I've never seen him so anxious, so worried and... Afraid? I walk back to him, sit down and place my hand on his shoulder. "Father?"

A single tear escapes his eye as he looks down at his feet. "I can't keep this from you. The negotiations, I lied about those. He's not coming here to discuss anything. He's coming here to get married."

Holy crap, he's been hiding something like that? And why? Why would he agree to something like that without asking me? I'm the goddamn Alpha of this pack; I can make decisions for everyone. I've never let them down before, and I don't plan to change that.

"Marry who? With all due respect, have you lost your mind, father? Didn't you think about discussing that with me before agreeing to such an outrageous deal? No, I can't approve of that. No woman in my pack will marry that monster!" I raise my voice, angered by the sudden news.

"He won't marry a woman," Father whispers.

Well, that doesn't make any damn sense now! "Who's the fucking bride?" I run my fingers through my hair and return my gaze to the painting. We do this for families, for kids and mothers. Darn, remember who you are fighting for, don't give in! It's worth it. We can do it! We have to do this!

"You are."
