Chapter 6

“What are you talking about?” Kevin asked, his eyes widened.

“I know this is so sudden, but I have prepared you for this kind of situation right from the start,” she stared at him.

“You know that isn’t what I am talking about, Bella,” he stared back at her.

“What will happen to us?” he asked. “How do you want me to cope?”

“Kevin-,”

“Don’t tell me you didn’t think about us when you made your decision?”

“Kevin,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

“You have to understand that I don’t have a say in this matter,” she paused. “My hands are tied here.”

“Don’t tell me you don’t have a choice. Everyone does,” Kevin yelled.

“Kevin!” she snapped at him. “If I had a choice, I would choose to stay here, because I can’t bear to leave everything I have built for years.

“But you have to believe me when I tell you I have no choice but to return home.”

“Bella…”

“I can only promise you that once everything is back to normal, I will come back to find you.”

Kevin stood up from his seat, he walked over to her and pull her up.

“You promise?” He placed his hand on the small of her back and pull her closer to his chest.

“I promise,” she smiled at him for just a second, before keeping a serious face.

“You also have to promise me something.”

“Anything,” he smiled at her. “If it is for you, I would do anything.”

“If I take too long to return, promise me you will move on?”

“Is there something you are not telling me?”

“No!” she blurted, and he narrowed his eyes at her.

“I mean… no,” she said in a calm voice. “I don’t know what could happen, but I want you to be prepared for anything.”

She placed a finger on his lip to silence him.

“I give you custody of this hospital. I trust you will take care of it in my absence.”

“Bella,” he croaked.

“I can’t trust anyone else to do the job.”

“How do I know you won’t be coming back?”

“You will know,” was all she said.

He nods his head; his eyes grew wistful as he stared at her small pink lips.

She smiled, knowing the thoughts running through his head. She stood on her toe and place her lip on his. He pulls her closer as he deepens the kiss.

A WEEK LATER

Bella walked out of the terminal of Toronto airport; her phone pressed to her ear as she got into the hired car that was there to pick her up.

“Yes, I am back in Toronto Kevin… I was able to convince them to let you take over until further notice… They promise to always send their specialist to Toronto whenever you need them… Of course, you can call me… I am sorry Kev, I can’t disclose my location for safety reasons, even our calls will be limited but I’ll try to get in touch… I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the whole truth, but yes, I am in danger. It is why I can’t tell you my location even though we are both in the same city…”

The line went dead for a while, and her heart skipped a beat, thinking he hung up on her. She was about to pull the phone away from her ear when his gruff voice filled it.

A smile stretches her lip.

“I promise Kev, I will take care of myself… I love you too.”

She hung up and turn her face to the window side, watching the trees and house whoosh past her. Her mind drifted off to the last time she left her home.

“Please mom, don’t chase me out,” tears trickled down her little cheek.

“I didn’t give birth to a nuisance. You wanted to live with the humans, right?” Her mother snapped at her.

“Now is the chance for that, you can go to hell for all I care. I don’t want to see you near my house anymore.”

It felt like a dream to her.

How did things go wrong?

As far as she remembered, werewolves don’t like associating with humans and humans have no idea that they exist. But being the kind of girl she is, she always craves whatever is forbidden to the wolf generation.

Her eyes moved across the crowd, searching for someone. Her frown deepens as her eyes settled on his little form.

She knew at once that he was the one who ratted her out to her parents when she saw the smirk on his lip. Her heart plummets down to her stomach.

She had trusted him with her secret, but he backstabbed her. He made the whole pack hate her for wanting to live with the human. He made her childhood experience a terrible one.

He unleashed the bitch in her, and she spend her teenage and youthful days getting her revenge on him.

Of course, he retaliated. She remembered vividly the accident that cemented their hatred.

“We are here, ma’am,” the taxi driver called back her attention.

She lifts her head to stare at the gigantic building in front of her.

“Thank you,” she whispered as she stretches her card to him.

She got out of the car, and a few minutes later, the driver came out too. He returned the card to her and brought out her bag from the booth.

She thanked him and watched him drive away before turning to look at the building again, which stood in place of the old cottage that used to be her hiding place. Whenever she felt the need to cry and didn’t want to break down in front of her parents or the pack members, she would come here and cry her eyes out.

The memories brought fresh tears to her eyes; her hand tightened on her bag as she awaits the pack member who would come to pick her up. But no one could have prepared her for what happened.

“Look who we have here?”

Her body stiffened, her hand tightened on the bag, and her eyes widened.

That voice! She would recognize it anywhere.
