Chapter 3: Never-Ending Thoughts

Damien’s POV

“The work is done, boss,” Michael — one of my people — informed me. I nodded and he left the room.

I rubbed my forehead and sighed. Things have been difficult without Trevor. He wasn’t just a business partner, he was my best friend. Now, he had just… disappeared for three days.

I can’t find him. I don’t even know if I should.

Anyway, the work was done, so it was time to go home. I got up and as I left the cabin, my eyes fell on a woman standing near the door. I raised my eyebrow.

“Do I know you?”

She looked at me and gasped. “Ah— no, no sir. I–I was, uh, just…”

“Calm down,” I said as I sensed how scared she was.

She took a deep breath.

“Y-yeah. Uh, I was… um, appointed by Mr. Trevor Hall to assist you in your work, but—but I couldn’t gather the courage to… to introduce myself. I am sorry.”

I looked at the interesting woman with precision. She was weird — and beautiful.

“Well, I hope you have the courage now,” I said with a smile I usually don’t wear.

She looked at me and then down.

“I-I am Evie. Evie Davies.”

“Well, welcome Evie. Now, why would he appoint you? I’ve never worked with a female assistant before. What’s so special in you?”

She started thinking nervously. To be honest, I was also thinking about why Trev would appoint anyone? Did he do it for me? And does she know where he is?

“I-I have no idea, boss. But I will try my best!”

I nodded. “Okay. Let’s start then. Do you know where he is now?”

“Uh, you-you mean Mr. Trevor?”

“Yes.”

“I… don’t know. He never contacted me again after hiring me yesterday. He told me not to contact him either.”

I nodded. So, of course, he doesn’t want to be found.

“And well, if you want to work for me, lose the stuttering.” I shrugged and said. With that, I started moving towards my car and she followed me.

When I reached my car, I had a weird idea.

It was weird for me.

“Do you know how to drive?” I asked her with a smirk.

She gulped slightly and nodded. “Yes, boss.”

“Get in.”

She gave me one last look without getting inside my very own car and got ready to drive. I sat in the passenger’s seat and looked over at her.

“I want to reach my house today. So follow the map and start.”

She nodded twice and started driving along the location given. Her driving skills were good. I don’t know why I asked her to drive — or even let her in my car — but it felt like it was good.

I’ve never had a female assistant because they would all be so vicious, but she doesn’t seem like that. So, I just want to know her more — and that means I need to spend more time with her.

I kept quiet as she drove me back home.

The car came to a slow pause and I looked that I had already arrived at my house. I came out of the car and she did, too.

“I-I am sorry, boss, I should’ve opened the door for you! I am a little clumsy, but I will improve!” She said suddenly and I smiled.

“I don’t mind that not really,” I replied.

She smiled slightly.

“How will you get to your house?” I asked and she looked around.

“I will catch a cab.”

“Is it far from here?”

My concern seemed to… concern her. Not only her, though.

“A… little. But I will be fine. Thank you, boss.”

I nodded and went inside. She stood on the road and booked a cab. Weirdly enough, I had the urge to stand by the window and make sure she got a cab. So, I stood for like 7 minutes until she finally got inside one of the cabs.

Evie.

That’s a beautiful name.

What’s wrong with me? Beau— what?

I laughed at myself and my thoughts. Maybe I was going crazy from what happened with Trevor. Of course, I was going crazy.

I finalized some deals on the phone for my business and then finally had the time to sleep. Normally, I would go to bed and after switching off the lights, I’d fall asleep in a minute.

But today was different as her face and voice continued resounding for a long while. Her nervousness, her words, and her small smile.

I have known her for what, like an hour or two and I was already drowning in her thoughts.

I was about to fall asleep when suddenly I heard a loud noise coming from the living room. I got up immediately and took one of my revolvers. I took stealthy steps towards the stairs and then tried to peek downstairs, but it was too dark to see anything.

I went downstairs very quietly and turned on the lights.

I let out a shaky breath — for the first time — at the person I saw.
