Chapter 8: Are You Sick?

Damien

“Where did you find Evie?” I asked him. He looked at me with suspicion.

“How does that matter?”

“Well, she was the only one new—”

“So you brought her to our secret base and let her hear our conversation without trusting her?”

“You know there is no one we can trust!” I shouted. “We can never be sure!”

“No. No, that is not true. I trusted you and you failed our plan.”

I scoffed. “You want to pin that on me?”

“Yes, actually.” He got up. “I should’ve never called you.”

“And I should've never accepted someone you hired.”

“And I should’ve never told you about my fiancee because you are so fucking jealous of everything.”

I chuckled. “What?”

“Yes. That’s what it was about. You never had what I had. That love, that—”

“She was cheating on you and she would always have,” I said and stared at him coldly. “She was a slut and I’m shocked you didn’t know that.”

He didn’t say anything and I left the place. I know that he knows that I would never say anything like that if it wasn’t true.

I didn’t want the truth to come out like this but sometimes, I can’t control my anger.

Anger.

Evie.

I let out an exasperated sigh. I had to go back and talk to her. She better tells me the truth or I would get it out of her by force.

I parked my car in front of the house and entered inside. “Evie!” I called out.

She was in one of the rooms on the first floor. “Oh hey! How did it go?”

“Apparently, someone told Lucifer, who told him about the attack.”

She looked down, probably hiding her shock about Lucifer. “So you lost?”

“Yes.”

“Oh.”

I walked over to her and she looked at me.

“If it is not much of a coincidence, I’d like to point out that you were the only new person in our group yesterday.”

“Wh-what do you mean?”

“Oh, baby you know exactly what I mean.” I chuckled. “So, do you want to tell me the truth yourself or do I have to make you say it?”

She gulped.

“I—”

“By the way, lying would be your greatest mistake.”

She didn’t speak for an entire minute and I stared at her. “Well?” I asked again.

“I-I am so sorry!”

I chuckled. “What?”

“I didn’t, but I–I mean, I didn’t tell him anything. But I don’t know maybe he—maybe he knew somehow through me.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I took out my gun. I was ready to shoot her — just in case.

Her breathing rasped as she saw the revolver. “D—boss.”

“Nothing to fear, Evie. Continue.”

She took a deep breath. “I–I was taken by Lucifer a few months back. He forced me to work for him. That’s how Mr. Trevor found me. Lucifer was keeping an eye out and he sent me on his path. But—but after yesterday, after you were ready to protect me, I gave up on helping him! I did!”

I took a dominating step toward her and she took a step back. I traced her face with my gun and she closed her eyes. “You want me to believe that?”

“I—I have no proof but—”

“Exactly. Do you think you will walk out of here alive?”

Her breath shuddered.

“I—uh, you can use a lie detector. That will tell the truth, right?”

“No, it won’t,” I whispered in her ears. “We’re all trained to fool it.”

“I-I am not!”

“Shut up!” I shouted and she flinched.

I got away and took both of her soft hands into mine. She gaped at me with fear and I took her to the basement of our house.

She looked at me with worried eyes as I tied her to a chair.

“Wha—what are you doing?”

“Either you tell me the truth now or you won’t get another chance.”

“I already told you the truth!” She shouted back.

I scoffed. “You don’t even know how to make up a good fake story.”

“Because it wasn’t fake!”

I don’t know why, but I had this feeling in my gut that… I don’t know, I should trust her. Maybe. Maybe she wasn’t lying.

But everything pointed otherwise.

“No. It is. That’s why you slept with me. So that I won’t get time to do any research on you!”

She looked at me with disappointment. Her eyes were numb and hurt. “You’ll believe what you want to. So go ahead and kill me,” she whispered.

I wanted to look at her coldly but her condition made me feel bad. I took a deep breath before going out of the basement and locking it.

I guess I will have to wait and get my head straight before doing anything else.

I was sitting on the couch in the living room and trying to convince my mind that her story couldn’t be true.

However, I knew that even if I did believe her story, still no one else would — and Trevor already knows about my suspicion. He would definitely get his revenge on her.

I decided to talk to her again. I took a water bottle and headed downstairs.

As soon as I opened the gate, she looked at me with puppy eyes. I looked down, opened her hands, and handed over the bottle to her.

She threw it away.

“What?” I asked.

“You think I want to drink that? You must have poisoned it.”

I sighed. I picked up the bottle and drank a little of it. “Happy? Now if we die, we die together.” I handed it back.

She rolled her eyes and drank half of it.

“I have reached a conclusion,” I said. “I want you to tell me all about Lucifer and stay hidden from everyone else in return for being free.”

“I am sorry, what? How will I be free if I have to stay hidden?”

“Well, if you like being tied up better then you’re most welcomed.” I made an innocent smile and was about to walk out.

“Hey hey hey no!” She stopped and I turned around with another smile.

“So?”

“Deal.”

I smirked and untied her legs. She got up and rolled her eyes at me.

“What? Your eyes can’t stop rolling when they look at something extremely handsome?”

She was halfway through rolling them again but stopped and scoffed. “Whatever.”

“So I am handsome?”

“You’re asking as if you don’t know it.” She took the initiative to walk out of the basement.

I smirked and followed her to the living room. “Well, it is pretty easy to understand that he didn’t tell me his confidential secrets. But I do know the base where he took me when I first stepped on his radar.”

“Let’s start from the start,” I interrupted. “Why did you step on his radar?”

“For starters, I killed his enemy.”

“Come again?”

“Reginald. You didn’t think he just disappeared, did you?”

Well, this girl is full of surprises.

“You killed him? How?”

She looked at me with an irritated face. “How dumb can you be? How do you kill a person? Maybe a shot to the heart?”

I scoffed and nodded. “Well, why did you?”

“Because he killed my brother.”

“Why?”

“Aren’t you being too redundant?”

“No, answer the question.”

She sighed. “Well, he was an illegal drug dealer. I knew it and even though I didn’t like what he did, I didn’t interfere. I wish I had because, well, he was at the wrong time in the wrong place. You know those shallow, empty, and scary places where all this goes down? He was making a drug deal and suddenly a fight broke down between Lucifer and Reginald. He shot my brother — maybe by mistake, so, well, I killed him.”

“You were there with your brother?” I raised an eyebrow, trying to foreshadow my surprise.

“No, of course, I wasn’t, dumbass!” She shrugged and I rolled my eyes! “But it is a rule — well, was a rule, that every drug deal has to be recorded with a camera set on the front of the dealer. So, my brother — Sam, he had the camera attached to his shirt and he last looked at Reginald who clearly shot him.”

I sighed. Well, this all seems to be weird. I never met anyone “normal” before who had such a history.

She definitely isn’t normal, though. She called me a dumbass!

“And you just happened to get your hands on the camera?”

She looked at me and tried to check my temperature by keeping her finger on my forehead and I leaned back. “What are you doing?”

“I guess you’re sick because in no way can you, so dumb, be the CEO and a mafia leader.”

I tried to intimate her by giving her a scary look but she smiled. Was she acting to be scared by my gun earlier?

“Of course, the camera was attached to the laptop at the house. When he didn’t return, I checked it myself.”

I nodded.

“But seriously. Are you sick?” She smirked.

I sighed loudly. It is going to be hell living with her.
