Chapter 43

Violet

Halfway through lunch, I caught a glimpse of golden hair and baby blue eyes and felt my heart jump in my chest. Holden had just emerged from the line, a tray stacked with fruits and fire-grilled meats in his hand. There was a tug in my gut, bringing on an ache that didn’t exactly feel physical in nature. It drew my attention away from Holden to the other side of the lunchroom, where Hael sat glowering at the golden-haired football player.

Holden’s shoulders slumped and he turned around, walking to a table full of his friends, and taking a seat.

‘That prick. Holden was going to sit with us!’ Lacey growled. ‘I take back what I said before, I can’t fucking stand the bad ones. I’ll take a boring jock any day.’

I tried to catch Holden’s eye all throughout lunch but couldn’t manage to get anything more than a second long glance. It wasn’t until my last class that I got to talk to him.

We’d gone to the Media Center for the remainder of class, so that everyone could get the chance
