The silence that followed after Ruby’s statement was frightening and brought back memories.

She was a little girl again, sitting on the counter in her mother’s kitchen, tears in her eyes with a broken eyeglass in her hand. All objects appeared blurry, the tears coupled with her poor eyesight was a terrible combination.

She sniffled and wiped the tears off her face. It was the fifth pair of eyeglasses she had gotten that school year.

“Honey, are you going to tell me how you got that one broken?” He mother asked with sad eyes

She was preparing dinner and had an apron on when Ruby walked into the kitchen sobbing. She was alarmed and feared for the poor child. It wasn’t the first time she came home with broken glasses, each time she asked her how it happened, she would lie that she tripped and fell. Her mother had reported the case to the school but there wasn’t any proof a fellow student was the one who broke it.
