Chapter 4: Creaks...

.

~~Lyla Drew~~

I walked out of my room hurriedly shutting the door behind me.

I’m not taking any chances.

Walking downstairs, I paused hearing a creaky sound in the upstairs floorboard.

Don’t think about it, Lyla.

This house is old, it has creaks all the time.

I assured myself while heading downstairs and then to the dining room where Klaus was already waiting for me.

I sat opposite him taking my portion of breakfast as the scent of bacon and eggs wafted through my nostrils.

“Look at you all ready on school on time all because of me “. Klaus smiled giving himself a compliment as well.

I rolled my eyes. “Because you woke me up against my wishes “.

“Take it as a morning present from your big brother “.

“Tch !”. I scoffed. “As if I’m happy to go to school”.

“School helps “.

I watched him eating waiting for the right time to talk.

“What?”. Klaus paused asking with his mouth full. “Why are you staring at me ?”.

“Why can’t I school outside Springfield? And go with you ?”.

“Lyla. We’ve talked about this, you are on a scholarship, after your last year in high school, you’ll come with me. I’m not going anywhere yet, I promise I’ll take you with me “.

My brother had a scholarship from a football team earlier this year.

He was supposed to go but instead he stayed behind for me so I could finish high school.

“But I feel like I’m holding you back “.

“No, you are not, relax. I’m still going to get another football scholarship“. He said reassuring me. “And besides, you want me to leave you here all alone in this deadly town ?”.

I shrug remembering the incidents happening. “I can handle myself “.

“No, you can’t. You get scared easily and make fuss out of ordinary things. But like I said, after you are done with high school, we’ll leave this town immediately “.

“You don’t want the serial killer getting to me because you love your little sister?”. I asked teasing him.

“Yes”. He agreed, surprisingly. “You are the only family I have left. I can’t let him or her, whoever the person is, get to you. I’ve been protecting you and I’ll continue to do so “.

I smile. “I love you, Klaus”.

“Eww “. His face scrunched up. “Don’t tell me that “.

I laugh knowing that was his attitude.

“I have to go to school “. I say standing up hanging my bag on one arm.

“Be careful, Lyla”.

“The school is only two minutes walk from here, don’t fret out “.

“I’m serious, Lyla. Anything is possible now, i don’t want you gone. So be careful who you talk to, understood ?”.

“Okay, bye”.

I blew him kisses which he rejected while I laughed heading to the main door.

I got out of my house and walked on the lane to my school.

People weren’t in sight this morning.

But I didn’t mind, I can walk alone.

The school isn’t really that far.

Klaus likes making a fuss and yet he’s claiming that I’m the one who does that.

“Hi !”.

I paused hearing someone’s voice behind me making me turn to see a boy my age.

He was giving me this gummy smile that creeped me out.

Not a good sign.

I ignored him and immediately looked forward walking faster so I wouldn’t be involved in a conversation with him.

Klaus said not to talk to anybody.

“Hey, wait up “. He grabbed my arm trying to make me stop but I shrugged him off still walking faster.

I could hear his footsteps coming closer which scared the hell out of me and I began to run.

I only ran a few meters then sighed out of relief seeing my school in sight.

I turned expecting to see the boy but no one was there.

Nobody was at my back.

That’s strange.

I could hear his footsteps following after me while I ran.

Why wasn’t he behind me now that I turned?

Finding the whole thing suspicious, I walked hurriedly to the school gate going to stand in line with the girls.

I kind of felt safe with people around me.

“Hi, Lyla”.

Two girls waved at me but I simply gave them a nod of acknowledgement.

That’s me.

Lyla Drew.

18 in high school, have never had a boyfriend, doesn’t have friends and always tight lipped in school.

I always kept my distance.

Because most of the girls who wanted to have a friendship with me were those who crushed on Klaus.

And I was kind of their middlemen.

So I stopped.

I stopped responding to people, I stopped initiating conversations.

People deemed me weird and I guess I kind of got used to being alone.

I liked the feeling and continued with the silent mode so as to avoid anything called a conversation.

I felt a pain in my arm and looked down noticing a few scratches where that boy had grabbed me.

Jeez!

Did he have long fingernails or what ?

“I feel so sorry for him, you know. And to think he was so cute “. One of the girls behind said talking to her group of friends.

“Yeah”. Her friend responded. “Too bad he was killed “.

My ears perked up hearing that.

The serial killer struck again ?

“Who was killed ?”. I asked breaking my rule to talk to the girls.

“Hi, Lyla “. One of the girls smiled walking over to me.

I didn’t say anything and she took that as a cue to go back to her spot.

“A boy was murdered last night. His body was found this morning around 6am “. She told me.

I widened my eyes. “What ? But a teenager was also murdered in a playground too yesterday evening“.

“Yeah “. The girl nodded. “Too sudden, that’s like two deaths in a row”.

I sighed realizing that’s why Klaus doesn’t let me watch the news.

So I don’t get to hear things depressing as that.

“Look at him, he’s so cute to be murdered, which means the serial killer isn’t a girl because how can she resist the handsome face ?”. One of the girls asked.

“Can I see ?”.

The one in the middle nodded handing her phone to me.

I muttered a low thank you scrolling down the article but then paused seeing the boy picture.

It was as if my heart stopped beating.

This was the same boy who stopped me this morning.

Stumbling backwards, I handed the girl her phone as she looked at me confused.

I breathed in and out trying to calm myself I fiddled with my fingers.

The boy is dead.

He was murdered yesterday ?

But now, I saw him this morning.

Alive and talking to me.

I closed my eyes trying to steady my breathing when the image of him popped into my head causing me to scream opening my eyes back immediately.

Students stared at me before turning back to their business while I fiddled my fingers whimpering slightly trying not to think of the fact that i just saw a ghost on my way to school.

Oh jeez!

I’m scared.

~~At Springfield Road~~

The two adults were in the car as the man sped across the road leading to the border.

“Finally”. The lady muttered. “Soon, we’ll be out of the shitty town”.

The man glanced at her. “It’s still far, an hour away from getting to the border “.

“It doesn’t matter. At least, I’m relieved that in an hour, I’ll be far away from all of these stuffs happening “. She replied turning away to look outside the window.

The lady was so desperate to leave Springfield.

She and her boyfriend made a plan to run away.

Just this morning, it was on the news that another dead body was found.

She didn’t want to die yet.

She didn’t want to become one of the victims.

Despite having been warned about the police about not leaving the town.

Still, she and her boyfriend deferred the laws.

They felt the unknown killer appeared only at night and that gave them the urge to attempt running away in bright daylight around noon.

“I really need to stop “. The man said slowing down his car.

“Why? Is something wrong ?”. Her eyes flew to the fuel tank. “Do you need a refill?”.

“No, nothing like that. I just need to have a quick piss. I’ve been holding it for a while now “.

She groaned. “Okay fine, go urinate, don’t take long”.

The man nodded as he finally stopped the car by the roadside.

Opening the side of his car, he stepped out and went into the nearby bushes to go pee.

While the lady waited clipping off her fingernails constantly looking out of the car.

There wasn’t anybody in sight.

And that made her feel uneasy.

“Where the heck is he ? He should have been back by now, it doesn’t take that long to have a quick piss”. She muttered after 5 minutes had presumably passed.

She grabbed her phone checking if there was any service to call her boyfriend.

But there was none.

She groaned putting her hands behind her head resting back on the car seat.

She might as well take a nap.

10 minutes passed.

“Where the hell did he go ?”.

Getting frustrated, a scowl spread on her face as she opened her side of the car door and stepped out.

Walking towards the bush, she stopped letting out a loud screech clutching her hands to her chest.

There was her boyfriend.

On the bushy grasses, the shirt he had been wearing was torn off as his chest seemed to have been stabbed continuously, blood flowing from the area and his neck was slit, skull hit as blood rushed down his face.

She kept on screaming until she felt the pierce of a knife through her back.

She slowly turned her head feeling the breath on her neck.

Tears steaming down her face and she whimpered at what she saw.

A young boy, with dark brown hair.

Blood splattered on his face and clothes as he gave a low giggle earning a scream from the young lady.

As the girl’s vision faded, the one thing she would never forget even if she was dead.

Was the wide and eerie smile on his face.

~~Sky Hepburn~~

“And that’s what most organizations don’t know “. The economics teacher said while writing the benefits of capitalizations on the board.

But I wasn’t focused on her teaching.

I was getting distracted.

By my own thoughts.

Remembering how Ace Carlton was staring at me this morning kind of irked me.

Why would he be staring at me ?

Maybe I’m kind of over reacting and reading too much into it.

But I seriously can’t be blamed.

After the whole rumors swirling about that Ace is into guys.

Not a confirmed rumor but still.

I glanced towards the back where he sat with his friend, Jason.

His friend seemed to be saying something while he listened with rapt attention.

I set my gaze on him for a little while.

He kind of seems cute.

With the whole brown hair and hazel eyes kind of making him look like a high school sweetheart.

He turned my way and our eyes met making me face my front swiftly.

Jeez!

I breathed out.

That was a close one.

I can’t believe he caught me staring.

Or maybe he didn’t exactly know I was staring.

I turned again to get a glance at him when I realized his eyes were still on me.

With color rushing up to my cheeks, I faced the front again trying to stop the blush forming.

The bell rang and some students sighed in class.

“And thats it for today “. The teacher said as mostly everyone began standing up.

I grabbed my school bag and rushed out of the class immediately.

Damn!

Ace caught me staring at him.

I knew I should have been more discreet about it.

Now he’ll think I’m into him.

Which I’m obviously not.

I turned making my way to the male restroom.

I seriously need to wash my nervousness away.

I got there and opened the door closing it behind me going to take a pee but stopped at what I saw.

A boy at the sink washing his hands.

It would have seemed normal.

But he was washing his hands with blood.

The boy turned around and I stepped backwards surprised, my heart pounding against my chest.

The same boy from the news this morning.
