Nell reflected that it was just her luck that the music had changed to a slow ballad. She knew all the excuses in the world wouldn’t save her now. This was bound to upset a lot of people. Well, it couldn’t be helped. Alpha Liam was the last person she wanted to antagonise.
He looked good in his charcoal grey suit and was actually clean-shaven for the occasion in contrast to the majority of his male pack members. Was that a new aftershave or a scent wafting in from the garden? It was unseasonably warm which was why the windows were open.
Accepting his outstretched hand, Nell told him, “I’m flattered, but you really ought to know I have two left feet.”
The Alpha leaned down a long way to whisper in her ear, “That makes two of us. The difference is, I’m paying people not to notice.”
She wanted to giggle but didn’t dare. He was so hard to read most of the time.
Then she was being pulled in close for an unnerving slow dance. The top of her head barely reached to his chest and he was strong, so strong. Nell almost forgot to breathe.
“Sorry,” she murmured, when her foot skidded on the slippery floor.
“Look at me,” he demanded. “I feel like I’m supporting a child.”
Her head shot up at that. “Just say the word and I’ll give way to the dozens who want to take my place,” she snapped.
Nell’s mouth stayed open after her unguarded words.
“That won’t be happening anytime soon,” the Alpha growled.
Was that a smirk?
“My neck’s going to have a permanent crick in it at this rate,” she grumbled, trying to pretend his sharp jawline wasn’t affecting her.
“Too bad,” he said, “because right now I’m enjoying the view far too much.”
Hot colour scorched her face.
“Do you set out to humiliate all women, or is it just me?”
“I don’t know what you mean, Nell.”
A redhead in a mini skirt was hovering, but a simple flick of his fingers dismissed her.
“Is everyone looking at us, Alpha?”
“So you do know how to address me properly,” he commented. “Nell, what do you care?”
“I work here, remember?”
“That’s right. For as long as I want you. Say it.”
Her lip mutinous, she said, “I don’t even have a contract of employment. Am I just here at your whim?”
Alpha Liam didn’t answer immediately, though there was an infinitesimal slackening of his hold. Was he taking her seriously for once?
Then he spoiled it all.
“What is it about you, woman? Putting these crazy ideas in my head.”
“Am I to take over as Fallon’s main carer," she persisted, "or will you find someone else too lazy to check on her every hour?”
She meant her sister, but he took exception to her accusation and Nell realised he probably thought she was referring to his aunt.
“I’ll be sure to tell Deborah how lowly you rate her,” he said, confirming her fears.
“Please don’t do that, Alpha, because it’s not true. It was Liv I meant.”
“A likely story.”
“It’s true,” she said. “Punish me, if you must, for disrespecting your relative. But I can assure you I would never do anything of the kind.”
“I’ll let it go this once. It is my birthday, after all. Isn’t it about time you kissed me?” Nell assumed he was joking and didn’t reply. “Well?” he demanded.
All at once a scuffle broke out behind them, involving the redhead she didn’t know and Carrie, the mother of a pup named Bradley who sometimes brought him to see Fallon. High pitched screeching followed before the other she-wolves pulled them apart.
“Does she need assistance?” Nell asked, glad of the distraction.
“Shifters heal swiftly,” he told her, dismissively. “Now, where were we?”
“But you still need a new pack medic,” she pressed.
“Are you questioning me, woman?”
She shook her head and winced, hoping her ears were still covered. “Just stating a fact, Alpha,” she said.
“Kiss me and I’ll consider promoting you.”
“You can’t be serious. I’m far from qualified to do such a responsible job.”
“So what other duties can I assign you?”
“Anything,” Nell said, “as long as l can resume taking care of Fallon.”
“Sure of yourself, aren’t you, woman?”
“Not especially. Oh, the music’s stopped.”
Trying to escape him before he was ready to release her proved unfortunate as Alpha Liam seized her wrist so tightly that he dislocated it. Her cry of anguish was lost on no-one.
“Come with me,” he ordered, hurrying her away from the festivities and awed faces.
“Please let me go, Alpha,” she begged. “I need to assess the damage.”
“I’ll take care of that,” he snarled, pushing her against the wall beside the medical room.
It was locked, of course, making him even angrier. But it simply made sense to keep pills and potions secure, especially with curious youngsters about.
“Why?” she asked. Shock was setting in now and her legs felt weak. “Why did you do it?”
“Because you’re mine,” he said, just before his mouth swooped down on hers.
Nell struggled feebly, beating at his chest with her good arm, but it was futile. The Alpha was in no mood to be denied. His tongue sought entrance and she parted her lips without thinking though stopped short of kissing him back. She didn’t want to be accused of anything, like when her mom had seen her and Josh necking outside the house after their fifth date.
He lifted her trembling body in his arms without warning, only then coming up for air.
“Let me go,” she pleaded. “This isn’t right.”
“See sense, woman. I need to take a look at that arm.”
“Oh,” was all she managed.
The Alpha headed in the direction of his office but didn’t stop there. For a brief moment she assumed he was taking her to the nursery. Instead, he nodded to the permanent guard and took her into his bedroom, kicking the door closed behind them.
He set her down carefully on a low couch. Her head was spinning by now. What would everyone think?
The painkillers were a surprise as was the fact that he brought her a glass of water, chilled from his small personal fridge.
“I might have to snap it back into position,” he warned. “If so, it will hurt.”
There was no apology forthcoming; she hadn’t really expected one.
“Alpha, don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t have an ounce of shifter blood in my veins. I won’t heal in the way you believe. It may even make it worse.”
“Then what do you suggest, Nell?”
“I have dressings in the nursery,” she told him. “And I’m used to taking care of myself, trust me.”
That was when he touched her cheek and pressed his forehead to hers, the nearest he would come to saying sorry.
Of course, he had to have the last word.
“Go then,” he said. “But I want you back here at midnight. We need to discuss your future duties.”
Nell gulped. There was no way she was consenting to that.
“Can’t it wait until morning?” she pleaded.
“Are you defying me, woman? Make sure you’re outside the door as the clock strikes the hour, or else.”

Liam stood people watching from the open doorway, reluctant to re-join the crowd at his own party. Turning twenty-five without a mate was sending him down the feral route. He sometimes believed he would end up as crazy as his mother.Aunt Deborah was trying to catch his eye. She seldom used the mind link with him, even though he had encouraged it. Now would be a good time to make her see sense and he continued to ignore her, knowing only too well what she wanted.Uncle Alan sauntered over. These days he was the pack’s accountant, but for once he didn’t want to talk shop, thankfully.“What did Nell do to upset you?” he asked, offering him a drink.“That’s my business,” Liam said.Accepting the cup of punch, he scanned the crowd, wondering who was babysitting Fallon. The Beta was absent though he could see Louisa by the French windows deep in conversation with three other she-wolves.Was Nell now alone with Jack? Well, that was one pack member who wouldn’t dream of trespassing on his te
Nell really couldn’t believe his audacity. “Will this take long, Alpha?” she countered. “I’m kinda busy right now,” he told her. When he moved aside and she saw the half-naked she-wolf lounging on his couch, the blush was inevitable. Yet she couldn’t understand why she was so angry. “I thought you were partial to redheads.” “Did you now?” “You’re impossible,” she stormed, resisting the temptation to stamp her foot. “Don’t tell me you’re jealous? You are, aren’t you?” She turned on her heel and was about to march off in the wrong direction when his voice stopped her in her tracks. “Henry was right. He said you had a little crush on me. Well, as you can see, you’re not the only one. You can go now, Selina,” he added. Sulking, the beauty slunk away without even bothering to retrieve her top. If Nell didn’t know better she would have thought it had been staged for her benefit. “Is that all, Alpha? If so, I’ll bid you goodnight.” “Not so fast.” Relieved not to be within his gras
Liam didn’t get much sleep. He’d hated the whole idea of a party and taken his resentment out on the one person who deserved it least. Over-indulging had been a way of avoiding the consequences but he didn’t have the headache which would have alleviated some of his guilt. He doubted Nell had noticed his inebriation; she probably couldn’t tell the difference. Though he seemed to recall foolishly telling her about Simon.Give these females an inch and they wanted the whole fucking mile. Like the one who’d emerged from his en suite unexpectedly wearing little more than a grin. It wasn’t the first time that had happened to him and he doubted it would be the last. Nell had been shocked, bewildered and ultimately, disbelieving when she saw Selina lounging on his couch. He could see it in her face, she suspected him of setting out to trap her into something offensive to her sensibilities. A very moral woman, Nell, unlike her slut of a sister. Even he could see that much.Sometimes, in her co
It was a difficult task now to pick up Fallon to soothe her. Nell managed it by sitting on a chair close to the window. Perhaps she should have held out for surgery, make the Alpha pay. Occasionally, her eyes strained to see the forest in the distance, and not because of her employer’s inexplicable behaviour. For her, it held its own pull, which was odd because a much scarier version figured in her nightmare, the recurring one which seemed to have banished all others.A dwelling was on fire and, because of its hidden nature, no-one came to help. She could see a girl straining to give birth and couldn’t understand the significance of the filigree chain and symbol which graced her forehead. Her clothing was ragged, a mixture of sage and purple in hue, and she was all alone in her travail.Sometimes, a man’s face convulsed in grief appeared. At others, she fancied she heard the cry of a baby. The most bizarre of all was when she saw people with light hair gathered in a semi-circle chanti
“What about Fallon?” She kept her tone reasonable and even, despite being caged by his much larger body. “Theo’s mated. Did you know that?” “And you’re just a bully. Alpha, I only know his name because I glanced at the badge on my way to your office. It doesn’t harm to be civil.” He spun away and she heaved a sigh of relief. “Ignore me. I’m just – at the end of my tether.” Admitting such a thing, and to her, wasn’t a first. Yet she marvelled at the way he continued to treat her like a confidante. “Let me make us a hot drink,” she said. “It’s about time for Fallon’s feed. Please excuse me while I change her.” She went about her necessary business in the bathroom. “You’ve done a lot with this place,” he called to her, as she cooed to her charge. “Good or bad, Alpha?” “Not to my taste, but girly enough for its occupants.” “You don’t want me to re-arrange your office, then, Liam?” She was only making small talk while she worked and winced a little to think she’d been so forward
Liam had dismissed the notion of giving in to the demanding humans until the idea for the concession came to him. He tried to convince himself it had nothing to do with Nell, but had to admit the thought of having access to her twenty-four seven was an appealing one.In truth, he was lonely and yet he wasn’t overly eager to find his mate. Having her at his beck and call, including in his bed or on the floor beside it, was too tempting a lure to resist. Not that he wanted Fallon to succumb to the weakness inherent in hybrids. Though holding her the other day had told him something was definitely amiss.Creating a new law would be a way around that.He could, of course, sack Nell if it suited him. Maybe he would tell her that if she started to misbehave. The delegation from Shutterford was due to arrive and he understood the mayor’s deputy was a doctor by trade, but there was no way he was going to have him examine the pup.Nell was coming to take notes. He hadn’t seen her for a day or
Nell forced herself to concentrate on polishing her notes while she waited for Deborah’s daughter to answer her message. Her heart was beating madly. What was he going to think when he saw her deformity? Maybe she could gauge his response by Holly’s reaction. Though she knew the two things were not the same.Getting up to look in the bathroom mirror more than once was no help. Whichever way you sliced it, she was a freak of nature.Holly responded in typical fashion with emojis indicating her enthusiasm and it wasn’t long before a tentative knock sounded at the door. The girl was mindful of the sickly baby, which could only be a good thing.“The Alpha likes you, I can tell,” she said. “Mom says … ”Nell held up a palm which trembled with the after effects of repetitive strain. “Please, save it,” she said. “I don’t want to know.”“Liam’s all right, just – burdened.”Like me.“I know. Unlike the rest of you, I guess I’m just unused to following orders.” Once the words left her mouth, sh
From the moment Holly gasped out the alarming truth, Nell had known instinctively she was right. Did that explain Rosemary Worthington Field’s coldness towards her? Her close relationship with her father spoke volumes. She knew he hadn’t been anything other than reassuringly human. Did that mean her natural mother was an elf?And had she been forced to give birth unattended in a hut which caught fire?Could Liv have been privy to the secret? That would explain a lot. Was her hip pain a sign? She supposed she would never know unless she plucked up the courage to ask her mom to tell her the truth.Holly didn’t seem unduly upset. She found the whole thing cool. Deborah had a slightly more grown up approach. They both wondered how the Alpha would take it, though neither of them voiced the thought. When he turned up, eventually, her heart was hammering in her chest. Nell knew the chignon suited her and that it had been a style favoured by Martha when hosting the once famous pack parties.T
