The Ultrasound

“What?” Lee asked. “Why would you ask her that?”

“There’s a bunch of tests in the bathroom trash and they all have two lines.” Grayson answered. “Scar? Are you pregnant?”

“Just like a little bit,” I answered.

“What is a little bit?!”

“Like a month.”

“Scarlett!” Lee exclaimed. “You’ve been pregnant for a month and didn’t tell either of us?!”

“Ugh…I just found out a few days ago! The day I had finally made a decision! And that’s why I was so weird and asked you guys to leave." I rushed out.

“Why wouldn’t you tell us?” Grayson demanded.

“I told her to,” Skyler commented.

“Sky really?” I asked.

“Sorry, I’ll just sip my wine.”

“Well, who is the father?” Lee asked. “Is it me? I know this is sooner than we wanted kids, but this could be amazing.”

“Or it’s me right?” Grayson asked. “I mean I’ve always wanted kids with you. We’ve talked about this a million times.”

I felt awful that they were both so excited.

“I don’t know,” I whispered. “I have no idea. And I was gonna do a paternity test and whoever was the father…that’s who I’d be with.”

“But what about who you chose before?” Lee questioned. “Doesn’t that matter? What if you were gonna choose me, but Grayson is the father?”

“It’s not fair to complicate a kid’s life. It would be weird if I was dating you, but Grayson was my child’s father and then I’d have the kid and feel so connected to Grayson because we created something so beautiful and I’d want to be with him for the rest of my life and then I would have hurt you and given you false hope. A-and vise versa! I’m not saying it’s Grayson’s.”

“So what needs to be done?” Grayson asked. “Do you need our DNA or whatever?”

“Nope. I actually already got it,” I looked down at the ground.

“Is that why you pulled my hair out?”

“Yes,”

Lee shook his head. “You’re a lunatic.”

--

The next day the three of us went to the hospital ready to give our DNA and find out who was gonna be a parent.

Dr. Conner smiled upon seeing me. “Hello, Scarlett! Am I to expect these are our two prospects for the child’s father?”

“Yes they are,” I responded. “They found out so I had to tell them.”

“Well, I feel better about taking their DNA knowing they are aware of what’s going on.”

“So, after this, we’ll have a sure answer, right?” Grayson questioned. “There will be no question about who the father is?”

“Exactly um…”

“Grayson Wrenford.” He shook Dr. Conner’s hand.

“And I’m Lee Windsor.”

Doctor Conner’s eyes widened. “You were not kidding about two very rich men,”

“You see my issue?” I asked.

“Well let’s all go to the lab and get you boys swabbed and Scarlett, another blood draw.”

“Will there even be enough for the peanut, jeez!”

“Peanut?” Lee raised his eyebrows.

“It’s what I’m calling it until I have more information on it.” I smiled.

“That’s cute,” Grayson said sincerely. He leaned in close. “I really hope it’s mine.”

“I know.”

After we were all done Doctor Conner smiled at us. “We should have the results in two weeks!”

“Wait, you said next week,” I protested. “We really need to know.”

“Because you’re my favorite patient, I’ll expedite it okay? But it still won’t be here before your ultrasound. Both Mr. Wrenford and Mr. Windsor may accompany you though.”

“Thank you Dr. Conner.” We chorused.

“So…what now?” Grayson asked.

My stomach turned. “I think I have to throw up.”

--

Everything smelled disgusting!

Every other second of the day I just wanted to vomit from all the horrid smells surrounding me. It was getting out of control at work. I was throwing up like every hour. Why don’t they tell you morning sickness happens in the afternoon too?!

“Ms. Watson, could I see you in my office?” My boss Rex Adams asked.

“Of course sir,” I hurried inside. “Um, is this about my last campaign? I know it was kind of lacking, but I’m going through alot and-”

“Scarlett, take a seat.” I slowly sat down. “I hate to ask you this but…are you using drugs again?”

“No, no of course not! Did something come back in my tests? Th-the doctors said it was clear.”

“No, but I’ve noticed you go to the bathroom almost every hour like you used to when you were…so I had to ask.”

I should tell him. He’s my employer and he should know.

“There’s a super good reason for that, Mr. Adams um…I’m pregnant. And super nauseous.” I admitted.

“Oh…wow um congratulations?” He asked.

“I mean I guess.”

“Well, thank you for telling me. We have great maternity leave here and of course your job will be waiting for you.”

“Oh thank you.”

“Um…I know it’s inappropriate to ask but…is that child a Windsor or a Wrenford?”

I winced. “I’ll let you know in a week.”

--

Grayson and Lee were over at my place all the time now. It’s like they thought because I was pregnant I couldn’t be alone.

“Is it weird that I’m excited for the ultrasound tomorrow?” Grayson asked, his grey crinkling happily. “Like there’s really a living thing inside of you that could be mine.”

“Or mine,” Lee reminded him.

“Well it’s definitely mine,” I laughed, trying to diffuse the tension.

“Can you feel kicks or anything yet?” Grayson asked eagerly.

“All I feel is nausea.”

“Ginger ale and crackers,” Lee stated. “I’ll order you some now.”

“How do you know that?” Grayson demanded.

“I’ve been around pregnant women,”

Right, his mother. If the baby is Lee’s I knew I’d definitely be taken care of.

Lee sat down next to me as I inhaled sharply. The once satisfying and comforting cinnamon smell that always surrounded him infiltrated my nose, but I was not pleased. The baby did not like it all.

I gagged. “Lee you have to go to the other couch,”

“What why?” He asked.

“The smell, I’m sorry, I can’t.” I pushed him away.

“You love the way I smell! You love cinnamon!”

“Your possible baby doesn’t,” I breathed heavily through the nausea.

“That’s definitely my child,” Grayson grinned. “I hate the smell of cinnamon too.”

--

The next day I was laying on my back in Doctor Conner’s room awaiting my ultrasound. I was so nervous. What if something was wrong? Or what if they didn’t find the heartbeat? What if I had already started making all these plans for no reason?

“How are we today?” Doctor Conner asked.

“Terrified,” I admitted.

“Everything will be okay. Now this is going to be really cold, okay?”

I nodded, taking both Lee and Grayson’s hands.

Dr. Conner squirted the clear liquid on my bare stomach. “Shit that’s cold!” I hissed.

“You’ll get used to it.” I felt him press the transducer against me and start moving it around. “Hm. Let’s see…ah there they are!”

I looked at the screen and almost fainted. I mean I couldn’t tell exactly what everything was, but I knew it was beautiful.

“Hey, peanut.” I whispered.

“Now for the heart beat…hm.”

“Is something wrong?” Lee asked.

“Can you not hear it?” Grayson questioned.

“Actually…I hear two heartbeats.” Dr. Conner laughed.

“Why does my baby have two hearts?!” I demanded.

“It doesn’t…you’re carrying twins Scarlett.”
