When we finish showering, Eli calls Alpha Rik. He wants to meet, but I have Eli put him off. I haven’t even settled into this environment, and I don’t know what to expect from those two Alphas. They seem to have expectations of me as a Guardian, and I’m not ready for that yet. When he’s done, he takes my hand, and we go in search of Carlos. We arrive at a door that is cracked open and we hear raised voices coming from inside. “I don’t care that he’s back, this pack is mine!” An unfamiliar voice yells. “And I told you before, you are not Alpha here. You do not make the rules and I will not step aside for you to ruin everything that we have built.” I recognize Carlos’s voice. It is strong and unwavering. As much as I’d like nothing better than to take my mate back upstairs and complete our mating bond, I need to see the pack lands. I know there is a lot of work that needs to be done, but I’m hoping some has been done in my absence. We don’t spend much time in the packhouse. I had started these repairs before I brought Cara here. It doesn’t appear that any more has been done. As we walk out back Carlos begins pointing out the structures that are being built. “We’re repurposing the concrete blocks from the dilapidated buildings around the pack to build homes for new families. As you can see over there,” he points to another group of houses. “Those houses had a strong structure, so we are just refurbishing those.” “How do you keep track of which houses are full and which ones are available?” Grace asks. He looks at her sheepishly. “It’s another stack of papers that I have. I just try to keep up with how many families we have and how many unoccupied homes we have. No one seems to mind

As we walk up the stairs toward Eli’s room, I start asking questions, trying to calm my nerves. I know what’s coming and while I’m no longer timid about completing the bond with Eli, it is something new and unknown for me. Most girls probably learn about sex from their mothers or their friends. After leaving Eli and Carlos, I head straight to the kitchens. There are only four people working cleaning up from breakfast and getting ready for lunch. “Hello everyone.” I say as I walk in. They are three omegas and Maddie. “Hi Maddie. You work in the kitchens, too?” I ask. “Yes, Luna. May I introduce you to Camila, Eleanor, and Abigail. They all go by their nicknames like me, so you can call them Cammy, Ellie and Abby.” “Hello ladies, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Grace.” I say. They all incline their heads and quietly say hello. I look at Maddie and I can see that this behavior is not unexpected. Well, they aren’t here because they were treated well at their last pack, and the only way they will learn that I’m different is to work with me, side by side. “Okay.” I say, clapping my hands together. The difference in the kitchen from this morning to now is almost unrecognizable. When Carlos and I walk in, I don’t know what to say. Thankfully, my unbelievable mate cues me in that I need to help our omegas feel comfortable and positive about their work. I make sure to go to each one and listen to what they are doing and praise them for their hard work. In my experience, omegas look to their ranked members, but specifically their Alphas, for praise and reinforcement that they are doing well. After Eli and Carlos went hunting, I turned to Maddie who had just returned from the garden. “Can you begin to make a list of items we need to stock the pantry. Eli and Carlos are going back out for meat, but I know we’re lacking in condiments and I’m sure many other things.” “Of course, Luna. Happy to help.” I begin to interview the new omegas that are streaming into the kitchen. Those that had no cooking experience but have some cleaning experience are now joining us to get assignments in the packhouse. I start with kitchen and dining room clean up, adding the community bathrooms on this floor to the list. I find someone that was a Lead Omega in her previous pack and set her up with a helper to go room by room in the packhouse to find out how many people are in each room and what supplies they need and cleaning rounds they would like.
