Chapter 2

The night was beautiful, as far as Joey was concerned. He had finally recovered from his hangover.

Lying in bed with his eyes closed, comforting himself with a bitter smile in his heart.

Suddenly, a familiar voice sounded from above him.

\"Wake up, Joey Xiao. Time to get up.\"

As he heard the words, he froze.

He pinched his thigh hard enough to make sure he wasn’t dreaming, and opened his eyes slowly.

James Fu stood by the bed, looking at him with an expressionless face.

There was pain on his legs, but everything felt surreal to Joey Xiao.

“I must be dreaming again,\" Joey Xiao whispered and closed his eyes.

Annoyed, James Fu, dropped some papers on his face. “Get up, sign the contract,” he said in a cold tone.

Joey Xiao took the papers and quickly scanned through the contents.

\"What do you mean?\" Joey Xiao looked at him with the contract in his hands, pretending to be confused.

\"I don’t think that needs explaining.\" James Fu glared at him.

  Joey Xiao was conflicted.

“Mr. Fu, why should we pay a lot of money to protect an old man?”

\"Your mother was still looking for the right kidney donor.\" James said.

Joey felt his chest tighten. \"What do you mean?\"

“Joey Xiao,” he said, “Your mother’s life was on the line. It’s your decision.\" James Fu turned towards the door.

\"I’ll leave you here for a while to give you time to think it through.\"

Joey Xiao picked up a book from the bedside table and threw it at James.

  \"James Fu, you fucking bastard!\"

James Fu just shrugged and left.

At dinner, the contract was on the table.

Joey Xiao seated himself, his face blank. His mind drifted off until James Fu came and sat on a stool. “I have signed the contract for my mother’s kidney donor,” he declared.

James Fu, signalled the servant to take the contract away. He nodded to Joey Xiao. \"As long as you behave.\"

Joey Xiao smiled but it didn’t reach his charming eyes, “Two years,” he said.

\"What? \"James Fu was dead serious as he looked at him.

Joey Xiao grabbed the knife and stared him in the eye.

\"The contract, it’s for two years!\" Joey Xiao stabbed his food with the fork and sliced furiously with the knife. “I don’t care who you want to sleep with or where you want to go! As soon as the contract expires, we have to go our separate ways. You can never bother me again.”

James Fu narrowed his eyes and tapped his fingers on the table. For a few seconds, he was lost in thought. After some time, he nodded gently.

  \"OK, I promise you.\"

James Fu looked at Joey Xiao\'s stubborn eyes, pondering on something but unwilling to say it out loud. Two years was enough time for him to expire.
