Will

The voice sounded familiar, it was Rayne.

Seeing that Lena continued to stupidly lie atop the stranger's chest, Rayne pulled her up to face her.

" What? Can't talk? Or too ashamed to say a word? "

Lena looked around confused suddenly realizing the dense crowd of students on the rooftop. And everyone's eyes were on her, some pointing while whispering, others giving her a sympathetic look.

" What's going on? " Lena looked around confused.

" What's going on? Shouldn't I be the one asking that? Something goes wrong and the next thing you do is try to kill yourself? " Rayne snapped.

" What? I......" Just then the man beside her cleared his throat after dusting himself clean.

She stared at him in a daze again.

Seeing the man standing straight and tall stunned her once again she couldn't help drooling forgetting Rayne's words just now.

That height, that figure, certainly her type.

She found herself squeeling internally.

Rayne was even more upset at Lena's absent minded behavior.

" Hey! " She hit the back of Lena's head again.

" Oww! " she rubbed her head painfully.

" What what was that for? "

" You still have the galls to ask that? "

Before Rayne could start reprimanding her again a senior professor walked up to them. Along with him came a few policemen in uniform.

He patted the man who'd pulled Lena in appreciation. Before turning to the two girls with a Stern expression.

" Ahem " The professor looked at her rather sympathetically.

" Selena Thompson, am officer Harry Chesler, please come with us to the station for questioning." one of the police men who came along with the professor, introduced himself as he beckoned to Lena to follow them. The man was of average height with a slight chin beard, fair skin and a straight posture.

Lena's brows furrowed in confusion.

" Come with you? But why?" That was when she suddenly became fully aware of her surroundings.

The dense crowd of students on the rooftop weren't just standing around, they had their eyes all glued to her, and all of them either had on sympathetic gazes or one of hatred each one directed at her.

She peeked below the building to see an even bigger crowd with firetrucks filling the area.

She chuckled nervously as realization dawned on her. Did they think she was trying to kill herself?

She swallowed back a sarcastic chuckle.

' Her, commit suicide?'

She decided to clarify the misunderstanding. Turning to look at the police officer she said.

" Am sorry sir, but this is all some sort of misunderstanding, I wasn't....."

The man cut her short before she was even able to finish speaking.

He was quite familiar with suicide cases, the victim would usually deny attempting Suicide out of fear of being jailed when they spot the police or embarrassment, after realizing the effects of what they've done.

" Don't worry, we're only going to have a few words with you, and you'll be brought home safely afterwards." The man's voice held no room for refusal even though he had a smile on his face.

With a confused expression, she turned to look at Rayne in askance. But Rayne only pulled her along with a glare.

" Alright officer please lead the way." Rayne said to the police man.

Actually she was quite scared that Lena would suddenly jump off the building the minute they took their eyes off her.

The police officer addressed the professor before leading them off the crowded rooftop.

Before they left she could hear the professor murmur something about how good it was that a certain man had been around to rescue her, else she might have jumped to her death.

Her eyes subconsciously moved to the spot the gorgeously breathtaking man from earlier was standing but he was nowhere to be seen.

' He'd probably left.' she thought

Everyone was saying he saved her right? Fine, he'd be her hero then.

' Her hero.' an amusing concept, the image of the man's handsome face appeared in her mind and she couldn't help but smile widely, she sure hoped to see him again.

After hours and hours of trying to convince the cops a hundred times that she wasn't attempting suicide, she finally relented and just signed a few papers promising not to try it again but she did end up having a therapist assigned to her, which she'd have to attend for six months, at least she wasn't paying for it.

Leaving the station it was already dark, just as she stepped outside, her ear was suddenly grabbed by someone rendering a sharp pain. Then came Rayne's scolding voice.

" Try to kill yourself huh? So you're so brave enough to jump off a building? Weren't you scared huh? What got into you? " she mercilessly pulled Lena's ears to teach her a lesson.

" Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Hurts " Lena rubbed at her aching ear stinging with pain. " I really wasn't attempting suicide, really. "

" Who are you trying to fool? " Rayne didn't believe her, after all she clearly saw her almost jump off a building.

" I really wasn't, I went there for fresh air because I was upset at the fact that I was stupid enough to trust that Diane. "

" And so you thought to kill yourself. " Rayne admonished.

" pfft, No you should know more than anyone how much I value my own life. Why would I try to kill myself? " Lena remarked with an eye roll.

" Yes, but more than anyone I know how much you value your studies maybe even more than your life, who was it that ran into a safehouse guarded by deadly dogs that can rip you apart just to get your story, and all that for your assignment, mhhm. " she crossed her arms under her chest, looking at Lena with raised brows.

" Well, that was because, I was so close back then, would I allow just a pack of dogs to stop me? Anyway that's not the point, the point is I wasn't attempting suicide, gosh! Am not that crazy to jump off a building, do you know how high that is? " She was really getting tired of saying this same thing all day.

" Promise you weren't trying to jump?"

Rayne looked at her skeptically.

" I swear" Lena sighed holding Rayne's shoulders. " Really, I just wanted to relax." She noticed Rayne finally calm down at her words.

" Is that any way to relax? So what happened with Diane this morning?" Rayne could believe that she had really gone there due to the fact that she was upset. During the limited time she'd known Lena she'd always had crazy ways to unwind.

Rayne had just left a class when she noticed the commotion and rushed to the library, she had squeezed her way in out of curiosity just to get a glimpse of the drama going on when she suddenly found out that the one creating the whole drama was actually her best friend.

This morning was supposed to be Lena's presentation of her big story, she'd spent months doing research, going places, finding clues all to prepare for this big presentation.

Diane was one of the prettiest girl on campus, with her clique of friends, containing the most beautiful and elite girls from the sophomore year. Though they had almost the same classes, she and Diane never had any interaction at all.

Until this assignment, she was stunned when Diane had come to politely ask for her help, and even pulled an all night with her to do research.

She didn't expect to find out that, Diane was such a dedicated person, she'd always thought of her, as another pretty popular girl, but seeing Diane stick close to her for the assignment, she instantly changed her impression of the girl, and trusted her completely to even share her story with her in her excitement.

Last night when she had followed that man, she never thought she'd overhear such news, in her excitement, she texted Diane about it on the phone. Who knew that Diane would suddenly post the story as her own and even prepare to present it this morning, it was really shocking to see all of her own work in someone else's hands, and she even received all the credit for it. And to top it all off one of the biggest News agencies in the country had come in search of Diane, giving her praise and recognition for a work that wasn't even hers in the first place.

Listening to all of this Rayne was furious.

"What did I tell you? Not to trust that Diane girl she's up to no good, but you never listened to me, now do you see that she was really up to no good?" Rayne said in an annoyed tone, glaring at Lena.

Lena meekly shrunk her neck as she said.

"Alright, alright don't rub it in, I should have known girls like that would never have any good intentions, next time I'll listen to you alright." She smiled sweetly with two dips in her cheeks.

It was her fault for misunderstanding Diane's character.

Rayne placed her hands across Lena's shoulder as they walked down the street lit up by the street lights.

"Of course you'll listen to me from now on. At least now you know what happens when you don't heed my words." Rayne remarked playfully.

"Yes grandma." Lena grinned nudging Rayne.

"So what happens to your assignment now?" Rayne asked.

Lena glanced at Rayne with a crying expression, turning down her lips pitifully.

"I'll might have to restart all over again." She wailed flinging her arms across Rayne's shoulders.

Rayne burst into laughter patting Lena.

Getting into separate taxi's the two girls separated for the night.

Kalena's Eatery.

"Will, please take their orders." A woman yelled from outside the shop as she washed her hands in the sink. She had a small physique looking to be in her early forties. Her light brown eyes slightly narrowed in exhaustion as she took off her apron.

"Mother, am back." She heard her daughter's voice from inside the eatery, and her face lit up with a smile.

"Lena, what took you so long today, did you have extra classes." The woman's soft voice was filled with slight concern.

"Ooof." Lena threw her bag on a chair plopping her head on the table tiredly saying. "No mother, just had other things to do."

The woman smiled fondly as she ruffled her daughter's brown hair. "Quick, come get something to eat." She picked her apron to enter the eatery but paused as Lena pulled her arms forcing her to sit on a chair beside her.

"Mother, you always work so hard, get some rest, I'll go get the food myself." Lena glanced at her mother's exhausted face with worry in her eyes.

To felt a slight pang in her chest, her mother stubbornly shook her head waving it off.

"It doesn't matter, aren't I used to it? It's my job, am not feeling tired at all." Her mother tried to get up, but Lena pulled her arms to make her sit.

Lena pouted her naturally pink tainted lips in a childish manner as she leaned on her mother's shoulder. "You're working too hard, whenever you feel tired, just take a rest, stop pushing yourself too hard." Lena couldn't help but berate her mother.

Since her childhood she had always seen her mother working hard without rest, her mother had taken on the sole responsibility as the breadwinner for the family since her father died. Though she barely knew anything about him since he died right from when she was an infant, she barely even knows what he looked like. Growing up she had always wanted to help her mother share the responsibility but the woman would hear nothing of it and insisted she prioritize her studies.

Her mother had started this eatery when she was ten years old, and ever since then they'd grown, more people began to recognize and love her mother's food which earned them more customers but more work for her mother. She watched her mother strive everyday to put food on the table even if it was just the two of them. She swore to herself, that one day she would become so successful, her mother wouldn't need to work another day in her life.

"Fine, fine it's your job, but today I'm going to be the one to serve you." She got up leaving the table pushing down her mother's shoulders who was trying to get up in protest.

Kalisa watched her daughter's back shaking her head with a helpless smile on her face.

'Shing.' A frying sound could be heard from within the shop.

"Fried chips and mayo sauce, here's your order ma'am. Thank you, come again." Lena heard a male voice from inside the shop and a smile appeared on her face. She lightened her steps stealthily entering from the back.

A tall guy stood with his back facing Lena at the counter, his head lowered in concentration as he continously scribbled in a small notebook oblivious to Lena's arrival, as he mumbled something under his breath.

Lena narrowed her eyes playfully, raising up her fingers in a makeshift gun just like they usually did as kids to frighten each other she approached the guy. But just when she was a few inches away from him, she heard him say.

"Lena, if you interrupt my calculations, then you'll start over again yourself." His masculine voice reverberating in her ear.

She pouted, whacking his back with little force. "How did you know that I was here huh?" Lena demanded placing her hands on her hips.

"Please, I can smell you from a mile away." Will rolled his eyes without looking at her, he continued to focus on his calculations.

Lena frowned, sniffing her shirt. "What are you, a dog?" She picked up a plate and began placing food on it.

He chuckled before turning to look at her.

"You look like a mess, where have you been all day anyway?"

She picked up a silver tray looking at her own reflection, before sighing. "I don't look that bad, I was taken to the police station."

Will smiled not fully hearing what she said before suddenly exclaiming in shock. "What? The police, why, what did they do to you?" He suddenly dropped the little notebook grabbing her shoulders as he worriedly surveyed her for any injuries.

"Tsk, am fine, it wasn't anything bad I was merely questioned is all." She flicked his arms away and continued to pack the food.

Sizing her up again and confirming she wasn't harmed he breathed a sigh of relief, then said jokingly.

"I knew you'd end up getting yourself in trouble, you're too mischievous and even the police took notice of you, good thing, they thing they caught you before you end up tearing down the whole country."

"Humph, you're not going to ask me why I was questioned?"
