CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

Somehow, an oasis has been formed among the thick canopy of leaves in the treetops. Boards have been placed down to connect the trees, with a bed of blankets, shoddy table, small bookshelf, and other simple, human comforts nestled there.

Fireflies rest among the leaves, creating a natural light that illuminates everything. I’ve never seen anything like it before.

“This is one of my homes,” Lance explains. “I have a couple hidden around the forest. You have to be careful as a rouge, trying to maintain the balance of living your life without being caught. It’s exhausting sometimes.”

I feel bad that he’s had to live such an unstable life, but he’s certainly made the most of it. I can’t imagine how anyone could create something like this under such circumstances.

“It’s beautiful,” I say.

He shrugs though I can see he’s silently proud.

“The home part doesn’t stretch on too far. I want to make sure I don’t get caught, of course. And that kind of thing would raise suspicion.
