My hands were steady, surprisingly.  I disconnected the phone and then immediately dialed Emmett.

“Thompkins Pest Control,” he answered.

“It’s me,” I said. 

“Kacela!” he crowed.  “How’s the job coming?  I haven’t heard from you for a while.  You finishing up?  I have a stack of people who want your services.”

“I’m calling about something else,” I said.  “I need you to get on a plane immediately.  Go get my mom.  Bring her back to my apartment and then sit on her.  Don’t let anyone, especially my dad, know where she is.”

“How bad is this?” he asked, his voice serious.

“Pretty bad,” I said.  “I’ll keep my dad busy here.  I need you to get mom safe.”  I paused, trying to decide how much to tell him.  I decided he needed
