Chapter 2

Author: Shell Flower
The words "illegitimate daughter" cut into me like a knife.

I couldn't hold back anymore. I screamed at Lauren's retreating back, "Tessa isn't illegitimate! She's Arthur's and my daughter. The day she was born, you and Arthur weren't…"

I froze mid-sentence because I remembered Lauren's marriage certificate date perfectly.

It was the exact day Tessa was born.

I remembered that day clearly. It was a rainy noon.

I had just finished feeding Paula lunch and was scrubbing the dishes with my huge belly sticking out.

The moment my water broke, I called Arthur immediately. But no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't get through.

I had to run outside and ask our neighbor, Sophia Carson, to watch Paula.

Sophia's husband, Steven Huff, took me to the village clinic on his tricycle.

As I lay in the delivery room, the pain was unbearable.

Yet, Arthur's phone seemed cursed. I dialed incessantly for a day and a night before the call finally got through.

There was no concern or joy in his voice. All I received was a jagged torrent of resentment. "Do you know how busy I am? This is a critical point in my career! Why did you keep calling me? Are you trying to ruin me?"

My hand shook as I held the phone. The words stuck in my throat turned into choked sobs of frustration.

After a long while, I managed to say, "She's six pounds, one ounce. It's a girl. I named her Tessa."

The call ended. Soon after, a transfer of two thousand dollars appeared in my account.

Arthur sent me a text. "I'm swamped and can't go back. Buy something nice for yourself."

Tessa was already five now. She hugged me and gently rocked me, pulling me back from my spiraling thoughts.

"Mommy, can we move to the city and live with Daddy?"

Her words shattered me.

She had breathed for the dream of a life shared with Arthur. Now, it seemed that dream would remain forever out of reach.

I saw Arthur again the next day at 4:00 pm.

Perhaps my expression was too broken. He sighed and took my hand. "Hattie, you know the full story now. I admit that I was in the wrong.

"But I was forced to marry Lauren. Her family has a lot of influence where I work. She pursued me for two years. She said that if I didn't marry her, I'd lose my job. You were pregnant then, and my mom was… I couldn't lose my job, so…"

So he could lie to me for seven whole years, keep me tied to his paralyzed mother, and trick me into giving birth to Tessa.

Now that Paula was gone, he was eager to kick me to the curb.

Even Tessa was just a tool to keep me trapped in this family.

I looked at his face, and all I felt was disgust. I pulled my hand back coldly and slapped him across the face.

"You make me sick."

Arthur's head turned from the slap.

Frowning, he pressed his tongue against his cheek. For a moment, he even looked relieved.

"I'll give you some money for Tessa's child support. After that, it's over between us."

As I stared at him, my heart sank completely.

Seven years of devotion, and I couldn't even buy a shred of his conscience.

His so-called love, promises, and excuses were all lies. To him, Tessa and I were nothing more than caretakers for his paralyzed mother.

When Tessa saw me crying, she immediately wiped my tears with her hands.

After that ordeal, Lauren's reputation was completely ruined. She had no place left in the city. She quickly finalized her divorce with Arthur and left with her son.As for me, I finally freed myself from Arthur and Lauren and welcomed a new beginning.Even after Arthur went to prison, I didn't let myself rest.I used the money from selling the gold bars to buy a spacious apartment in the city and brought Henry to live with me.With active treatment, his health steadily improved until he fully recovered.I also instructed Terrell to file a lawsuit in court, demanding Arthur compensate me for the seven years I cared for Paula and to increase Tessa's child support. The court ruled in my favor, ordering Arthur to pay me seven years' worth of labor fees and an additional three thousand dollars per month for Tessa's support until she turned 18.When I received the judgment, my heart overflowed with emotion. This wasn't just a sum of money. It was acknowledgment and respect for the s

Arthur was willing to make up lies and destroy my reputation just to take the inheritance.Tessa came over and tugged gently at my hand. "Mommy, are you mad? You always frown when you're mad."I pulled her into my arms and smiled. "No, Tessa. I'm not mad. Don't worry. As long as I'm here, we'll handle everything."I called Terrell right away and told him what happened. After listening, he calmly replied, "Don't worry. What he's doing won't help him get the inheritance. It'll only increase his legal liability. Leave the rest to me."Soon, Terrell released a public statement online on my behalf. He included Arthur's fake marriage certificate, Lauren's real one, as well as Paula's will and testimonies from the villagers. He laid out the full story clearly.Public opinion flipped almost instantly."So it was a fraudulent marriage? Arthur is absolute scum.""I feel so bad for Hattie. She took care of his mom for seven years and got treated like this?""Lauren's no better. She knew

Arthur met my steady gaze, then glanced at the angry villagers around him. In the end, he had no choice but to back down.He glared at me, then turned and dragged Lauren away.Once they left, the villagers slowly dispersed, offering congratulations as they went.Steven and Sophia stayed behind to help me pack the gold bars back into the boxes."Hattie, this is a lot of gold. You need to keep it safe. The gold market is strong right now, but don't sell it all at once. Keep some for value. It could even be Tessa's wedding gift someday."I nodded. Sophia's words made sense.Henry was still in the hospital waiting for money to save his life. I needed to cash out some of the gold immediately. The rest could stay as security for Tessa's and my future.I took one gold bar from the box and handed it to Steven and Sophia. "Mr. Huff, Mrs. Huff, thank you for taking care of me and Tessa all these years and for speaking up for me. Please take this. It's just a small token of my gratitude."

Steven said, "Arthur, don't blame your mom. Hattie hasn't had it easy. She never enjoyed a single good day after marrying you. Yet, she stayed behind willingly to take care of your mom for seven whole years."Arthur stood there, stunned, unable to say a word.Lauren's expression turned even darker, and her eyes were filled with resentment and jealousy. As I looked at Paula's signature on the will, tears slipped down my cheeks. It turned out that Paula had seen every sacrifice I made over those seven years. She had provided me with a solid ground to stand on in her own way.Terrell handed me a small brass key. "The two boxes of gold bars are hidden beneath the brick bed she used while she was bedridden. This key opens the compartment underneath. You can retrieve them anytime."I tightened my grip around the key, emotions surging through me.This tiny key didn't just unlock wealth. It unlocked my future. When I said I wanted to get the gold bars right away, Terrell agreed to come

My hand trembled as I held my phone. I couldn't believe what I had just heard.Arthur's expression changed instantly. He grabbed my wrist, his voice urgent as he asked, "Hattie, how could my mom possibly have gold bars? And why would she leave everything to you?"Lauren stood up from the couch as well. The shock on her face wiped away every trace of smugness from before.Compared to Arthur's excitement, her expression was filled with jealousy and a bitter resentment at seeing me do well."Is that a scam? Your mom lived in the village her whole life and was bedridden for seven years. Where would she get gold bars?"I shook off Arthur's grip.I took a step back. Watching their naked desperation for a quick profit, I felt a wave of profound irony wash over me.Back then, they had abandoned me and Tessa without a second thought. Now, just hearing the words "gold bars" had them scrambling."Whether it's a scam or not isn't your concern." I spoke coldly and turned to leave.Behind m

I continued, "Henry is critically ill. He needs money for treatment. And now you're asking me to return 200 thousand dollars?"There was a pause on the other end before Arthur's cold voice came through. "I don't have a choice. That money was marital property between me and Lauren. If you really have no way out, go beg Lauren. She's not short on money. She's just suing you to vent."What right did I have to resist anymore?Compared to Henry's life, my dignity meant nothing.…As I stood in front of the grand villa, the helpers looked me up and down like I was a beggar—or maybe a joke. When I went inside, Lauren had just taken off a face mask and was gently massaging her skin. Her smile was mocking, though she pretended to be surprised. "You came to see me to…"I lowered my head deeply. My throat was so dry that it felt like it was being cut open. "Please spare me. The money Arthur transferred was for our daughter's child support. My brother is seriously ill and needs money for t
