Chapter 3

Author: Heather Roberts
In my arms was a maid's uniform. Black skirt, white apron.

I looked up, staring at Darius in disbelief. "You want me to wear this to the birthday party?"

"This isn't just clothes." Darius's voice was calm. "You wear this tonight, and it means you're stepping out of the succession fight. You're backing Bianca."

He paused and gave me a once-over. "At least this way, you won't steal Bianca's spotlight tonight."

So in his eyes, this was already the perfect compromise.

My chest tightened, my fingers digging into the uniform.

"There's one more thing I need to tell you in advance." Darius pulled a crest from his inner pocket, one engraved with the Falcone family emblem. This was the badge of the heir's personal guard, but Bianca's name was carved into it.

"Starting tonight, I'll be Bianca's personal guard." Darius pinned the crest to his chest. "My gun and my blood will be loyal to Bianca from now on."

I froze.

Darius used to have the same crest once. Mine was the name on it.

When I was sixteen, after he rescued me from the kidnappers, he swore in front of the Don. He said he would protect me with his life, forever.

Now the person he would protect with his life had become Bianca.

Out of the three, Darius was the last one to turn to her. When Leon and Enzo drifted away, Darius's arms were my final refuge. I had prayed so many times in church, begging that he wouldn't leave me like the other two.

In the end, he pulled away more completely than anyone.

"The final part of the birthday banquet is the oath ceremony." Darius continued. "You'll need to swear in front of everyone too. As Bianca's personal attendant."

I almost thought I'd misheard.

"You want me to dress like a maid and swear loyalty to her?"

"It's just a formality."

"A formality?" I held up the uniform. "I will never trample my own dignity like this!"

"Elena, this is for your own good." Darius's brow lowered. "This is the only way you'll still have a place in this family!"

Even now, he still seemed to think I should be grateful for his arrangement.

I stared at him for a few seconds, then pulled with both hands.

The fabric ripped in my grip.

Darius's face went dark. He pulled out a radio and muttered a few words.

Moments later, the lounge door swung open. Bianca stood in front, Leon and Enzo right behind her.

Leon glanced at the torn uniform on the floor, then his gaze landed on me. "What are you causing now?"

"I'm not causing anything." I threw the torn dress to the ground. "I'm just refusing to be Bianca's attendant."

Leon let out a cold snort.

Enzo stood beside him, eyes like ice. "This is the family giving you a chance, Elena. I'd suggest you know when to take it."

I ignored them and looked straight at Bianca. "So this is why you invited me?"

Bianca walked up to me, her heel deliberately pressing down on my hem. She clutched her chest, her voice soft and frail. "Elena, you're misunderstanding me. I just wanted you to come to my party."

Her heel stayed on my dress as she spoke.

A faint tearing sound came from my feet.

I stared at her. "Move your foot."

She stepped half a pace closer and whispered, just low enough for me to hear, "Watch your tone. I'm the Falcone heir."

I bent down and yanked my hem back.

The fabric tore. Bianca lost her balance, let out a gasp, and fell backward.

Darius lunged forward and caught her smoothly.

The next second, Enzo twisted my arm behind my back, and Leon grabbed my shoulder, slamming me face-down against the vanity. My forehead hit the tabletop, pain shooting through me so hard my vision went dark.

When Leon's hand pressed down, I caught a glimpse of the pale scar on his palm. The one he got three years ago, protecting me.

Enzo's hold was still sharp and precise, just like the night he shielded me through that alley shootout a year ago.

But this time, they did it for Bianca.

Darius's furious voice crashed down from above.

"How much longer are you going to keep this up?"

"You actually dared to hurt Bianca right in front of us. Elena, I am so done with you!"

The only sound left in the hall was Enzo's muffled groans of pain.I handed my daughter to Adrian and walked up to Darius, looking down at him from above."Why did you do it?"Darius's face was covered in blood, but his eyes still followed me."If Adrian died, you would come back..."I let out a cold laugh. "Ridiculous. Who told you that?"Darius's body went rigid. His gaze flicked instinctively toward Bianca.Bianca's face drained of color. "Don't you dare—""It was her." Darius closed his eyes, his voice completely shattered. "She said if I killed him, you'd need me again.""I did not!" Bianca shrieked. "He's drunk! He's framing me!""Then what about us?" Leon suddenly spoke up.He was pinned to the ground by the guards, nothing but despair left on his face."You ordered the side doors closed. You said we should take Elena in the chaos and bring her back to us."Enzo clutched his bleeding knee, his voice trembling as he added, "You also said if we took her daughter, we could force he

Don Falcone's casket was temporarily laid in the main hall of the Falcone estate.I looked at his peaceful face inside the casket, tears streaming down my cheeks.Adrian held me tight beside me, pressing a firm kiss to my forehead. Our daughter stood behind us, held in the arms of a Moretti nanny."Say goodbye to your grandfather."The little girl placed a white rose on the casket, not quite understanding what was happening.I bent down and kissed her forehead, forcing back the sting behind my eyes.Bianca sat in the main seat, her gaze sweeping over us before she shot a look toward the corner. My heart tightened. The next second, the side doors of the hall slammed shut at the same time.Adrian stepped in front of me and our daughter, his voice low. "Careful. Something's wrong."Before the words fully left his mouth, Darius burst out from the crowd, drawing his gun and aiming at Adrian."You can't take my Elena away!"A gunshot exploded.Adrian was already ready. He rolled aside, dodgi

Before leaving the estate, Adrian said he wanted to see the room I used to live in.I couldn't say no to him, so I led him to the door. When it swung open, I paused for a moment. It looked almost exactly the same as three years ago. Neat and tidy. The bedsheets were my favorite pale blue. Fresh white roses sat by the window. The desk was piled with gift boxes, each one marked with a date.I flipped through a few and raised an eyebrow. They were the three birthday gifts Darius and the others had missed, all belatedly delivered. The butler followed behind me. "Mr. Lombardi won't let anyone touch this room. He has it cleaned every day. Would you like me to move these gifts to your car?"I shook my head. "No need."Late compensation wasn't love. It was just their offering to ease their own guilt. As we were talking, Bianca walked in with two bodyguards.I looked at her evenly. "Have you made up your mind about the agreement?""Three years away, and you come back throwing your weight around

Darius blocked the doorway, his gaze locked on my hand intertwined with Adrian's."Elena. Let's talk. Alone.""There's no need." I said.Leon stepped forward, his voice hoarse. "Three years. Not a single day has passed that we haven't regretted it."Enzo's voice cracked too. "We've already paid the price.""That's your life." I gently rubbed the wedding band on my finger. "Nothing to do with me."Darius finally noticed the ring on my hand. His face went ashen. He staggered toward me in a daze.Adrian raised his arm, blocking him. "Mr. Lombardi. Mind your boundaries."His tone was calm, but his hand rested casually on his holster.Darius stared at him. The regret in his eyes slowly curdled into jealousy."Get out of my way!" Darius snarled. "This is between me and Elena.""She is the Moretti heir." Adrian took my hand, showing off our matching rings. "And my wife.""You disgraceful piece of shit—" Salvatore's face flushed red. His trembling finger pointed at Darius. "Don't you dare emba

Three years later, I stepped into the Falcone estate again. As the heir of the Moretti family.Adrian walked beside me, flipping through the agreement that had just been delivered. He was the Moretti family's consigliere, the second-in-command, and also my husband. He was my father's right hand and brain, and my strongest pillar of support.Today, he came with me to negotiate the alliance treaty with the Falcones."They changed two terms last minute." He handed me the file. "They're asking for forty percent of the port profits, and they won't budge an inch on the Queens territory."I glanced over the revisions and said flatly, "They're using Don Salvatore's illness to pressure me into conceding."My foster father Salvatore was gravely ill. The Falcones wanted to lock in the treaty before he passed.Adrian shrugged. "Old ties are old ties. Business is business."Inside the conference room, the Falcone family had already assembled. Bianca sat in the main seat across from me.Three years

I had barely settled into the Moretti estate when my father knocked on my door."There are three young men at the gate, making a scene. They're demanding to see you." He looked at me. "Want me to send them away?"I raised an eyebrow, instantly realizing who had come. They'd hurt me. They didn't deserve me staying. But they'd also taken care of me for twenty-two years. They at least deserved a proper goodbye."No need." I kissed my father's cheek. "I'll handle it."My father paused for a moment, then pinned a Moretti crest to my chest."Remember. From the moment you came home, no one gets to humiliate you again."I nodded. When I reached the front gate, Darius, Leon, and Enzo were standing outside the iron bars. Their collars were disheveled, their eyes bloodshot. On either side of them stood two rows of grim-faced Moretti guards in black.Darius spotted me first. His gaze landed on the gauze on my forehead and the brace on my right arm. His face went pale."Elena..."He stepped forward
