Chapter 5: When the Bond Bleeds

last update publish date: 2026-03-25 18:25:20

Kael knew something was wrong the moment he woke up.

It wasn’t the room—still cold, still silent, still suffocating in its emptiness. It wasn’t the academy either. Draven Academy had always felt like a place designed to suffocate weakness.

No.

This was different.

This was inside him.

A sharp pressure pulsed beneath his ribs, not quite pain, but close enough to make his breathing uneven. Kael sat up slowly, his hand pressing instinctively against his chest as if he could force whatever it was back into place.

It didn’t work.

The bond stirred.

Stronger than before.

Alive.

Kael exhaled sharply, swinging his legs off the bed. His body felt heavier, slower—not from exhaustion, but from awareness. Every nerve seemed tuned to something beyond himself.

And then—

It hit him.

A sudden wave of emotion crashed through his chest.

Not his.

Anger.

Sharp. Controlled. Burning.

Kael froze.

“…Lucien.”

The name slipped out before he could stop it.

The feeling intensified, flooding his senses with a clarity that made his stomach twist. It wasn’t just emotion anymore—it was direction. Pulling him. Guiding him.

Demanding.

Kael stood immediately.

“This is getting worse,” he muttered.

And he wasn’t going to sit here and pretend it wasn’t happening.

The corridors of Draven Academy were quieter than usual, but the silence felt… wrong.

Heavy.

Watching.

Kael moved quickly, his steps echoing faintly against the stone floor. The pull in his chest grew stronger with every turn, every step drawing him closer to something he couldn’t ignore.

Or escape.

He didn’t need directions.

The bond guided him.

Through narrow halls.

Past silent doors.

Down a flight of stairs that led somewhere deeper than the first-year quarters were meant to go.

Restricted.

Of course.

Kael didn’t slow down.

He found Lucien in one of the lower training chambers.

Alone.

The room was dimly lit, shadows clinging to the corners like they belonged there. A single training dummy stood in the center—split cleanly down the middle.

Lucien stood a few steps away, breathing steady, though his posture was rigid.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

Kael stopped at the entrance, watching him.

The bond pulsed sharply.

Relief.

Then—

Irritation.

Lucien turned slowly, as if he had already known Kael would be there.

“Following me now?” he asked, voice calm but edged.

Kael crossed his arms. “You pulled me here.”

Lucien’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“I didn’t—”

“You did,” Kael cut in. “Whether you meant to or not.”

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Lucien studied him for a long moment before speaking again. “You felt it.”

Not a question.

Kael nodded once. “Stronger than before.”

Lucien exhaled quietly, tension slipping through his otherwise perfect composure. “Same.”

Kael stepped into the room fully now, the door closing behind him with a soft click that felt louder than it should have.

The air shifted.

Charged.

“Something changed after the last trial,” Kael said. “This isn’t just awareness anymore.”

Lucien didn’t deny it.

“It’s escalating,” he replied. “Faster than it should.”

Kael frowned. “You keep saying that. ‘Should.’ Like you know what this is.”

Lucien hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

“I know what it might be.”

Kael’s eyes sharpened. “Then start talking.”

Lucien walked past him, slow, deliberate. Kael felt it immediately—the shift in proximity, the subtle tightening of the bond, like a thread pulling taut between them.

“There are records,” Lucien said. “Old ones. Before the academy became what it is now.”

Kael turned slightly, watching him. “And?”

Lucien’s gaze flicked toward him. “They mention something called a Blood Oath Bond.”

The words settled heavily in the room.

Kael’s expression didn’t change, but his chest tightened.

“Explain.”

Lucien’s voice lowered. “It’s not something that happens by chance. It’s ritual-based. Rare. Dangerous.”

Kael let out a dry breath. “That sounds about right.”

Lucien ignored the comment.

“It binds two individuals,” he continued, “on a level deeper than physical connection. Emotions, instincts… even pain can be shared.”

Kael went still.

That explained too much.

“And the catch?” he asked.

Lucien met his gaze.

“It doesn’t break.”

Silence.

Cold.

Final.

Kael’s jaw tightened. “Everything breaks.”

“Not this,” Lucien said quietly.

Something about the certainty in his voice made Kael’s stomach twist.

Before Kael could respond—

Pain exploded through his chest.

Sharp.

Violent.

He staggered back, grabbing the edge of a nearby table to steady himself.

“What—”

The pain wasn’t his.

That was the worst part.

It wasn’t his.

Kael gasped, his vision blurring as the sensation intensified. It burned through him, raw and unfiltered—

And then he realized—

Lucien.

Kael looked up.

Lucien had dropped to one knee, his hand pressed against his side, blood seeping slowly through his fingers.

“What happened?” Kael demanded.

Lucien’s breathing was uneven, but his voice remained steady. “Training… earlier.”

Kael’s eyes darkened. “And you didn’t think to mention that?”

“It wasn’t serious.”

“Clearly, it is now.”

The pain surged again, forcing Kael to grit his teeth. He could feel it exactly—every pulse, every throb, every sharp edge of it.

Shared.

Real.

Unavoidable.

“This is the bond,” Kael said through clenched teeth.

Lucien nodded once. “Yes.”

Kael let out a harsh breath, forcing himself upright. “Then we have a problem.”

Lucien looked up at him, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. “We always did.”

Footsteps echoed outside the chamber.

Both of them froze instantly.

The bond snapped tight, tension flooding through it like a warning.

“Someone’s coming,” Kael muttered.

Lucien pushed himself to his feet despite the injury, his posture straightening immediately, composure snapping back into place like nothing had happened.

Kael watched him for a second.

Even injured—

Still controlled.

Still dangerous.

The door creaked open.

Two upperclassmen stepped inside, their presence immediately shifting the atmosphere.

They were older. Stronger. And unlike the first-years, they weren’t hiding their interest.

Their eyes landed on Kael and Lucien almost instantly.

“Well,” one of them said slowly, a smirk forming. “Looks like we found something interesting.”

Kael didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Lucien stepped slightly forward, placing himself just enough between them and Kael to be noticed.

Protective.

The bond reacted instantly.

A sharp, unfamiliar warmth flickered through Kael’s chest.

He ignored it.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Lucien said calmly.

The second upperclassman laughed softly. “And you think you can stop us?”

The tension in the room snapped.

Kael shifted his stance.

Lucien didn’t move.

But the bond—

It surged.

The first attack came fast.

Too fast for a normal first-year to react.

But Kael wasn’t alone.

The bond flared, feeding him information before the strike even landed. He moved instantly, dodging to the side as Lucien stepped in, intercepting the attack with precise efficiency.

They didn’t speak.

They didn’t need to.

Every movement was synchronized.

Instinctive.

Perfect.

The second upperclassman lunged toward Kael, but Kael was already moving, his body reacting before his mind caught up. He blocked, countered, and struck in one fluid motion.

Lucien followed through on the opening instantly.

Together—

They overwhelmed them.

The fight ended faster than it should have.

The upperclassmen staggered back, stunned, their confidence shattered.

One of them wiped blood from his lip, eyes narrowing.

“…What are you?”

Kael didn’t answer.

Lucien didn’t either.

They didn’t need to.

Because even they didn’t fully know yet.

The upperclassmen left without another word.

But the warning was clear.

They had been noticed.

And in Draven Academy—

That was dangerous.

Silence returned to the chamber.

Heavy.

Tense.

Kael exhaled slowly, his pulse finally beginning to settle.

“That’s new,” he muttered.

Lucien nodded slightly. “Yes.”

Kael glanced at him. “We’re stronger together.”

Lucien met his gaze.

“Dangerously so.”

Kael didn’t disagree.

Because now—

It wasn’t just a bond.

It was a weapon.

But weapons could be used.

Or destroyed.

And as Kael looked at Lucien—

He realized something that unsettled him more than anything else.

This connection wasn’t weakening.

It was growing.

Adapting.

Evolving.

And if they didn’t understand it soon—

It wouldn’t just change how they fought.

It would change everything.

Because at Draven Academy—

Power always came with a cost.

And Kael was starting to realize—

This bond might demand more than he was willing to give.

They left before dawn.No announcements. No witnesses.Just quiet movement through the outer gates while the stronghold still slept under the illusion of safety. The sky was a deep, endless blue-black, untouched by morning. A few faint stars lingered, stubborn against the coming light.Arin walked beside Kael in silence. Not tense. Not distant. But… different.Something between them had shifted after the ridge. Not broken. Not fully mended.Just… changed.More honest.More dangerous. She could still feel it.The weight of his words. Then I will. The promise he had made.Or the threat. She wasn’t sure which one it was anymore.“You’re thinking too loudly.”His voice cut gently through the quiet.Arin didn’t look at him. “You’re listening too closely.”“I always

Arin didn’t remember how long she stayed there.Time blurred into something meaningless. The ridge was quiet again.Too quiet.Like the land itself had exhaled after nearly tearing itself apart. The cracks in the ground still glowed faintly, thin lines of something unnatural running beneath the stone like veins of dying light. The air carried a metallic taste now, sharp and lingering, clinging to the back of her throat. She sat where she had collapsed.Or rather… where she had been caught. Her body felt distant.Heavy.Not entirely her own.Every breath was slow and uneven, like her lungs were relearning how to work after being forced into something they were never meant to handle. The power had receded. But not completely. It never did.Now it lingered.Quiet.Patient.Watching.Arin pressed her hand against the ground, fingers brushing over the fractured stone. It was warm.Still.That shouldn’t have been possible.Nothing about this should have been possible.“You’re going to hurt

The moment Arin crossed beyond the outer watch line, the world changed. Not visibly. Not immediately. But she felt it.Like stepping through an unseen boundary where something ancient had been waiting. The wind was colder out here.Sharper.It cut through the fabric of her clothes and settled into her bones, but that wasn’t what made her uneasy. It was the silence. No distant clashing of steel. No low hum of voices. No sense of protection behind stone walls.Just open land stretching endlessly ahead. And the feeling…That she was no longer just walking through it.She was being watched by it.Arin tightened her grip on the blade at her side but didn’t slow her pace.Turning back wasn’t an option. Not anymore. Not after what she said. Not after the look in Kael’s eyes when she walked away. Her chest tightened at the memory. She pushed it aside.Focus.This was her choice. Her responsibility. If she was the reason the enemy kept coming…Then she needed to understand why.And the only wa

The stronghold had never felt this suffocating before. Not even during war.Not even during the worst nights when the air carried the scent of blood and smoke and loss. This was different. This silence wasn’t born from battle. It was born from something far more dangerous.Tension.Arin stood at the far edge of the courtyard, arms folded tightly across her chest, her gaze fixed on the fractured stone beneath her feet. The marks were still there.Deep cracks running through the ground like veins of something broken open. Her doing. Her power. Her mistake.Voices moved around her, soldiers passing, medics tending to the injured, captains giving orders, but it all felt distant. Muted. Like she was standing outside of it all, watching a world she no longer fully belonged to.She flexed her fingers slowly. They still trembled. Not from exhaustion. From memory. From the feeling of that power surging through her again and again in her mind.Uncontrolled.Unforgiving.Alive.“You keep staring

The first clash hit like thunder.Steel collided. Shields splintered. The ground trembled under the force of impact as Kael’s forces met the advancing enemy head-on.Arin barely had time to think before instinct took over.Move.Fight.Survive.She surged forward with the front line, blade already in motion.
