"On our way, Miller," Michael said, his voice perfectly steady.

I brushed past Miller without looking at him, my face feeling like it was on fire. I didn't stop until I reached the meeting room, where a woman in a sharp blazer was waiting with two folders and a look of grim determination.

The Contract: Rules of Engagement

The PR rep, a woman named Vanessa who looked like she ate scandals for breakfast, didn't waste time.

"Here is the narrative," she said, sliding two sheets of paper across the table.

"You’ve been 'discreetly' seeing each other since the summer training camp. The kiss tonight was a 'moment of emotional overflow' because you were tired of hiding.

It’s romantic. It’s brave. It’s exactly what the fans will eat up."

I looked at the list of 'Rules' on the paper:

Public Affection: Frequent but tasteful.

Hand-holding, arm-draping, the occasional 'lingering look.'

Social Media: You will tag each other in 'candid' photos once a week.

The Party: You arrive together. You stay together. No talking to the exes.

No Contradictions: If asked, the timeline is six months.

"Six months?" I whispered, looking at Michael.

"Long enough to be serious, short enough that people don't wonder why you haven't moved in together yet," Michael said, already signing his name at the bottom of the sheet with a flourish.

I picked up the pen. My hand felt like it weighed a hundred pounds. If I signed this, there was no going back.

I signed.

The house was packed. The smell of cheap beer and loud music hit us the second we stepped onto the porch. Usually, I love these parties. Tonight, I felt like a lamb walking into a den of wolves.

"Breathe, Golden Boy," Michael muttered, his hand reaching out and sliding firmly around my waist.

The touch was a shock. It was heavy, warm, and possessive. I stiffened, but he squeezed my hip, a silent warning.

"Relax your shoulders," he whispered in my ear, his breath hot against my skin.

"Look like you want to be here. Look like you want me."

We walked through the door.

The music didn't stop, but the vibe changed instantly. People started nudging each other. Heads turned. A sea of whispers followed us as we moved toward the kitchen.

And then, I saw them.

Liam and Chloe were by the keg. Liam had a red solo cup in one hand and Chloe’s hand in the other. When they saw us, saw Michael’s arm draped over my shoulder, saw the way he was leaning into me, Liam’s smug expression didn't just fade. It crumbled.

Chloe’s eyes went wide, her mouth dropping open.

"Keep walking," Michael murmured, his fingers dancing along the edge of my waistband. "Don't look at them. Look at me."

I turned my head to look at him, and for a second, I forgot to pretend. He was looking at me with an intensity that felt real. He reached up, his thumb brushing a stray hair away from my forehead, his touch lingering just a second too long.

"There they are," Michael said loud enough for the circle around us to hear.

"The happy couple."

He leaned in, kissing my temple. "You doing okay, babe?"

The 'babe' nearly made me gag, but the look on Liam’s face, pure, unadulterated shock, made it all worth it.

"Never better," I said, my voice surprisingly steady. I reached up and mirrored his touch, my hand resting on his bicep.

The muscle was rock hard under his shirt. "I think I need a drink."

"Let's go get one," Michael said, leading me away.

As we passed Liam, Michael didn't even look at him. He just kept his eyes on me, acting like I was the only person in the room.

For the first time in weeks, the knot in my stomach loosened. It was working.

But as Michael’s hand slid lower, resting just above the curve of my ass, I realized the plan had one major flaw.

I was supposed to be hating this.

The party was a humid, sensory overload. The bass was a physical entity, thumping through the floorboards and rattling my teeth.

Every time the back door opened, a gust of winter air tried to cut through the heat, but the sheer volume of bodies in the kitchen won out.

I was standing against the counter, trapped between the marble edge and Michael’s frame. He wasn't just standing near me; he was consuming my space. His hand was a heavy, branding iron on my waist, his fingers digging into the denim of my jeans.

"Rossi, people are looking," I breathed, trying to keep my voice low enough that the nearby sophomores wouldn't hear.

"That's the point, Axel," he murmured. He leaned in, his nose brushing against the sensitive skin of my neck. "They need to see that I can't keep my hands off you."

He didn't give me time to argue. His lips found the cord of my neck, sucking a sharp, stinging mark right over my pulse point.

I let out a soft, broken sound, half-gasp, half-moan, that I didn't recognize.

My laughter was cold, and it held a truly liberated sound. I finally realized my father was nothing more than a pathetic man who used his checkbook to hide his own massive failures. He was a lonely old man sitting in a silent corporate tower, and he had no real friends to share his life with. He only had his money, and he used it to terrorize his own children because he did not know how to love us."Why are you laughing?" Richard demanded, and his smug tone vanished in a single second. "I just stole your perfect home away from you, and you are going to live in that broken student dorm for the rest of the year.""I am laughing because you are acting like a spoiled child," I told him, and I squeezed Axel's hand to comfort him. "You lost your control over my trust fund, and you lost your legal rights to my brother.""You failed to revoke Axel's nursing scholarship, and you failed to ruin my hockey career with your paid players," I continued. "You have no real power left, so you resorted

I stood inside the small leasing office, and I stared at the nervous landlord sitting behind the wooden desk. The older man looked down at the silver keys in his shaking hands, and he refused to meet my eyes."What do you mean someone just bought the building?" Axel asked the landlord, and his voice trembled with sudden fear. "We just finished touring the empty apartment upstairs, and you told us it was available to rent.""I received a phone call while you were walking around the third floor, and the buyer wired the funds a few minutes ago," the landlord explained with a weak apology. "The new owner purchased the entire property with cash, and he ordered me to cancel all pending rental applications today."Axel turned his head to look at me, and his dark eyes showed a deep sense of panic. He thought we lost our dream home, and he thought we were back at square one with our living situation. He worked very hard to convince himself we deserved a nice place, and he looked absolutely hea

He sat down very close to my side, and he stretched his long legs out in front of him. I rested my head against his strong shoulder, and I reached my hand out to hold his fingers."We can put our new bed right against that far wall," Michael suggested, and he pointed his free hand across the room. "We will wake up with the morning sun, and we will have a great view of the city skyline.""I want to buy a very soft rug for this floor so our feet do not get cold in the winter," I added to his plan. "We can also put a small reading chair in that corner near the window so I can study for my nursing exams."We sat on the floor together, and we shared a very sweet and peaceful moment away from the chaotic world. We did not have to worry about lawyers or angry billionaires anymore, because we won the brutal war.I looked around the sunlit room, and a profound sense of hope filled my chest. I felt we finally had a real future together, and I knew we were going to be very happy in this new home

We woke up early the next morning because we wanted to call the phone number on the red rental sign. Michael dialed the landlord on his cell phone, and he arranged a private tour of the apartment building for us.We left Gabriel asleep in his bed so he could get some extra rest before his morning classes started. We walked across the quiet campus together, and the bright morning sun warmed my face during our short trip. The streets were very calm at this early hour, and we did not see any reporters hiding near the sidewalks. We crossed the main road, and we stopped right in front of the beautiful brick building we saw last night."This place looks even better in the daylight," Michael said, and he pointed at the large glass windows. "The metal security gate is very tall, so my father's men will never be able to bother us here.""I really love the private courtyard behind the fence," I agreed, and I admired the green grass near the front entrance. "Gabriel can sit outside and read his

We walked into the living room, and we found Gabriel sitting on the ruined sofa with Carter and Miller. They were watching a sports channel on the television, but they muted the volume when we entered the room."Put your shoes on, Gabe," Michael announced with a bright smile. "Your final court papers cleared today, so you are legally safe from Richard."Gabriel gasped loud, and he jumped up from the couch to hug his older brother. Carter and Miller clapped their hands, and they offered loud cheers to congratulate the young teenager on his new life."Does this mean I never have to see those security guards again?" Gabriel asked, and he looked up at Michael with hopeful eyes. "Will they stop coming to the dorm room?""You will never see them again," Michael promised him, and he ruffled Gabriel's dark hair. "We are going to a fancy restaurant to celebrate your freedom, and I am paying the bill tonight."We left the broken dorm room behind us, and we walked across the campus to reach the

I looked down at Michael kneeling on the soft carpet, and my heart broke when I saw the single tear fall down his face. He looked very vulnerable right now, and he dropped all of his stubborn pride just to make sure I was safe.He was the strongest man I knew, yet he begged me to accept his financial help because he loved me. I realized my own pride was hurting both of us, and I was pushing him away for no good reason.Accepting his help was not a sign of weakness, and taking his money did not make me a dependent child. It meant we were equal partners in this relationship, and partners always share their heavy burdens with each other."You do not have to beg me," I whispered softly, and I reached my hands down to cup his warm face. "I will let you pay the tuition bill, and I will let you take care of me."Michael let out a huge breath of air, and he leaned his forehead against my stomach. He wrapped his strong arms tighter around my waist, and he held me with so much gentle care.I sa

I ended the phone call with Gabe and shoved the device back into my pocket. The cold evening wind hit my face when I stepped out of my car. I hurried across the asphalt to the diner entrance. The morning sun shone through the narrow blinds when I woke up, casting long shadows across my small dorm room.
