  • Daddy, I found you a wife.   Chapter 43

I stirred awake, staring at the empty space beside me.‘When did he leave?’The space beside me was warm, he probably just got up a few minutes earlier.I took slow steps to my room, my phone buzzed with new notificationsI already knew what It was about – the cast airing and the contract signing.Granger informed me that they planned on having a photoshoot, behind the scenes moments and snippets to increase the audience’s opinion on new actors in the show– Me.I couldn't remember the last time I slept in my room, most of the times I slept in Leonard's room. It was basically just for fancy, a place to keep my clothes. I rushed through my daily routine, glancing at myself in the mirror one last time before heading downstairs.Angel and Leonard were already seated at the dining table, the dishes in front of them remained untouched. He glanced at me as soon as I entered, “Good Morning.”I avoided his gaze, taking the seat farthest from him.Leonard seemed to mind, very much actually, hi

I may not have spent nearly enough time to know what Granger was thinking but I could swear on all the grey hairs in his head that it probably wasn't something good.Hannah leaned towards the assistant director, “Her gaze is frightening…perfect for Lenora.”Hattie's gaze was trained on me, she lowered her lids subtly and her mouth trembled as she clenched the hem of her skirt, “Anybody ... .Anybody but you!”Her head snapped upwards, staring right at us with teary eyes, “I would take a knife in the back from anybody…just not you!”I sat frozen in my seat, watching as she acted out her scene.Hattie. Her acting had improved, drastically compared to when we were kids. She was no longer the little girl who tailed behind me for every class and made a ruckus wherever she went, she was an A-list actress now, with a record as clean as it could ever be.Granger raised his hand and motioned for her to stop.“Veronica, why don't you act the scene alongside her.” I stood up and slowly walked to

I had just one question to ask,“Why?” I was more than dumb founded, what exactly was going through their heads? “You are fucking loaded so why on earth would you choose to clean up after an actress. A D-List actress!”This was absolutely insane, every single attire on their skin, heck James's Sneakers cost more than I earned in a month!“A lot of things matter more than money, for one, peace of mind.” Carrots bubbly face turned sullen, “I'd rather have a couple thousand bucks in my account than millions with zero freedom.”I'm not sure she understood the concept of poverty.Acouple thousand bucks would make a struggling single mom worship you and a med student battling with student loan treat you like a living Buddha.“I want to put my degree to good use in someplace other than my mother's company.” Lin adjusted the rim of her glasses, “Now, I'm just one string away from completly breaking loose.”James stared blankly at the table, “I'm just going wherever the wind takes me.”His voi

The therapy building looked like every rich-kid shrink's office I'd ever seen in movies, soft grays, abstract art that cost more than my soul, and a fish tank bubbling like it was paid to be calming.Angel clutched my hand the whole drive, her little fingers sweaty. Leonard had dropped us off at th

The puzzle box closed shut as Angel shoved the last piece in, her eyes gleaming like she'd just cracked a safe. I ruffled her hair, standing with a groan, my knees protesting from being too long on the rug. "Victory lap? Or straight to lunch? Your call, champ."She hopped up, notepad whipping out:

I shut the office door behind me, the click too loud in the quiet hallway. My phone was still buzzing in my pocket, like a damn hornet trapped in there, but I ignored it. Board members could wait. Reports could stack up. For once, something else clawed at me harder.Veronica. And Angel. Togeth

  • Daddy, I found you a wife.   Chapter 8: Veronica's POV

Angel's finger trembled on the paper, hovering over that jagged scrawl like it might bite. LEAVE OR DIE. The words weren't hers, they were too sloppy, too adult looking, etched in pencil that had ghosted through from the other side. My stomach dropped, cold and hard, like I'd swallowed ice. Who th
