~A MOTHER’S PANIC~

AMAYA’S POV

The older woman disappeared briefly, returning with a first aid kit in one hand and a small folded towel in the other before placing them on the table.

Then she carefully took Ariel from Ethan’s arms. My body tensed, but the woman offered a gentle smile. It was the kind of smile that reminded me there was still good left on this earth.

“I’ll clean her up and tuck her into bed,” she said in a warm, motherly voice.

For a second, panic rose in me automatically. My body almost moved to take Ariel back.

But Ethan noticed. “It’s okay,” he said quietly. “Maria has been with me for years.”

The woman—Maria, gave me another reassuring smile before carefully taking Ariel from his arms like she weighed something precious. I watched until they disappeared upstairs, my chest tightening at the sight of my baby finally resting peacefully after everything that happened tonight.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

Ethan guided me toward the couch.

“You need to breathe first before going upstairs,” he said.

I sat down slowly, every part of my body aching.

“What happened to you?” he asked after a moment. “Was it the robbers that did all this?”

I froze. My mind felt too exhausted to talk or explain properly anymore. I stared at my hands instead, one rested on my lap while the other clutched my bag like it was the only thing keeping me grounded.

Where would I even begin?

My head pounded so badly it felt like it would split open. I couldn’t think. Couldn’t breathe properly. Couldn’t even organize the chaos in my chest into words.

Ethan sat down beside me.

The movement alone made me flinch hard and instinctively shift away from him.

I hated that reaction and how normal it had become.

His eyes flicked to me immediately.

“You don’t need to say anything,” he said quietly. “Just let me tend to your wounds.” He paused briefly. “And you don’t need to be scared of me.”

A small, bitter, and tired laugh escaped me before I could stop it, because men always said things like that before proving otherwise.

I finally looked at him properly.

“I need a bath first,” I said softly. “I probably smell terrible.”

I glanced down at myself. Blood stains, sweat, dust, dried tears. I felt disgusting. “And my wounds…” I swallowed. “I can take care of them myself.”

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to argue.

“But…” He stopped himself and leaned back slightly. “Alright. I’ll let you.”

His eyes stayed on me though, steady and unreadable. “If you need anything, tell me or Maria.”

I nodded slowly and stood up, reaching for the first aid box Maria had left on the table and gripping it tightly. My legs still felt weak beneath me.

“Thank you,” I said again, more sincerely this time. “For letting us stay.” I turned slightly. “I should go to the room now.”

As I moved, I heard the younger staff tell him which room had been prepared for me. He quietly instructed her to bring fresh clothes and toiletries.

Something about that small detail almost made my chest hurt. Brown would have yelled at me for bleeding on his furniture. He would have forced me to clean up the mess and serve him dinner first.

Ethan stood up and gestured toward the staircase.

“I’ll show you the room.”

I followed him upstairs slowly. The mansion was quiet, the soft lighting making everything feel unreal after the nightmare I had just escaped from. My bare feet sank slightly into the expensive carpet as we walked down a long hallway. Finally, he stopped in front of a large door and pushed it open.

The room inside was beautiful. It had warm lights, cream walls, and a massive bed with big windows overlooking the city lights. But I barely noticed any of it, because Ariel wasn’t there.

Fear hit me instantly.

“Where’s my baby?” I asked quickly, turning toward him with panic already rising in my voice.

“Maria must have taken her to another room,” he said calmly, noticing the panic on my face almost immediately.

“No—” I stopped myself and took a breath. “Please… I want her to stay with me. At least for now.”

~THE MORNING AFTER~ AMAYA’S POV By the time I finished bathing and changed into the black nightwear Maria left for me, my entire body stung badly. The warm water had relaxed me for a few minutes, but now every bruise felt sharper somehow. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror while cleaning the cuts on my arms carefully, trying not to hiss whenever the antiseptic touched broken skin. After tending to my wounds, I switched off the bathroom light and walked back into the bedroom quietly. Ariel was already asleep beneath the duvet, curled into herself with her tiny curls scattered across the pillow. My chest softened immediately at the sight of her. I climbed into bed beside her carefully and pulled the blanket over us. Then I wrapped an arm around her small body and listened to her breathing. That alone calmed me more than anything else could. I honestly didn’t think sleep would come. My mind was too crowded, my body too tense, and this house still felt unfamiliar. Bu

~EXPOSED SCARS 2~ For one horrifying second, neither of us moved. His gaze flicked across me, too quickly for me to fully read, but enough to send shame crashing through my chest. I grabbed the gown from the floor immediately and pulled it tightly against my body. Ethan reacted just as fast. He turned away and shut the door almost instantly. “I’m sorry,” his voice came from the other side. Controlled, but rougher now. “I should’ve knocked.” I stood frozen behind the door, heart racing wildly. “I brought you clean clothes.” The door opened only slightly this time, just enough for his arm to reach through holding folded clothes neatly in his hand. I hurried forward and took them quickly without letting the gown slip. The second my fingers touched the fabric, he withdrew his hand and closed the door again completely. I leaned back against it afterward, breathing unevenly. Heat crawled across my face, not embarrassment alone, but humiliation. He saw me. Not the polis

~EXPOSED SCARS~ AMAYA’S POV The words came out faster than I intended. Too desperate, protective, but I couldn’t help it. Tonight had already shown me how quickly people could disappear. One second Ariel was in my arms, the next guns were pointed at us. I wasn’t ready to let her out of my sight, not even for comfort. Ethan watched me quietly for a moment before nodding once. “I’ll have Maria bring her back.” Relief loosened something tight in my chest. “Tomorrow,” he continued, “you can order whatever you and your daughter need online. Clothes, toiletries, anything.” He paused briefly. “And before you panic again, no—I’m not keeping you hostage. I just don’t think it’s safe for you to be seen outside yet.” I cut him off gently before he could explain further. “I understand.” My voice softened a little. “I don’t plan on leaving the house anyway. Not until I heal properly.” Not until I could look in the mirror without seeing fear staring back at me. His expression s

~THE STRANGER’S HOME~ AMAYA’S POV He smiled, but I barely noticed it because my mind had already drifted somewhere darker. For years, Brown made me feel powerless, but sitting there in that car with Ariel asleep beside me, something inside me slowly started changing. I wanted him to hurt the way he hurt me. I wanted him to wake up one morning and realize he no longer controlled me. I wanted him to feel the emptiness, the humiliation, the rage he spent years forcing down my throat. My fingers tightened around the bag on my lap. I used to look at myself and feel beautiful, but now, I avoided mirrors. Before Brown, I was confident, loud, and full of life. I took care of myself because I loved myself, not because I was trying to please anybody. My skin used to glow. I used to laugh without thinking about how I looked while doing it. I even contested in a major pageant once. I smiled faintly at the memory. I worked so hard for it too. Long rehearsals, strict diets,

~NEW BEGINNING~ He reached for me again, offering his hand. I stared at it for half a second too long. Then I ignored it and forced myself upright alone, still holding Ariel so tightly my arms had gone numb. Pain ripped through my ribs, but I swallowed it. I had trusted one man before. I wouldn’t make that mistake twice. Ariel kept crying against my neck, tiny shoulders shaking. I brushed her hair back with trembling fingers and forced a smile I didn’t feel. “Ariel, look at me, baby.” My voice was hoarse. “The bad guys are gone now. See? They’re gone.” She sniffled and slowly lifted her head. Her wet lashes blinked as she looked around the room, the men on the floor, the strangers with guns, the danger fading inch by inch. Her sobs quieted into shaky breaths. Then she pointed a tiny finger at the man in black. “He is an angel,” she whispered. “He saved us, Mummy.” For the first time, the stranger laughed. It was low and brief, but warm enough
