Chapter 5

Author: Lucky Jojo
Ryan studied me, clearly trying to figure out what I meant. "Why are you suddenly saying something like that?"

I scoffed and was about to answer when his phone suddenly started ringing.

The moment he saw who was calling, the darkness in his expression vanished, replaced by a tenderness he never bothered to hide.

"Don't be scared, Winnie. I won't let anything happen to you.

"You're not going to be disfigured. I'm coming right now, and I'll take you to the hospital myself.

"You'll have access to the best medical care in all of Jerriton."

That should have been mine.

Instead, I was lying helplessly in his Maybach, bound hand and foot, covered in blood and waiting to die while he promised another woman the medical care I desperately needed.

All at once, all words left me.

I simply closed my eyes and let him walk away.

In his rush to get to Winnie, he'd even forgotten to unlock the car.

I stretched toward the door with everything I had, desperate to get myself out, but I couldn't reach it. The air inside the car grew harder to breathe, and I pounded my fists against the window again and again until the backs of my hands were raw.

"Help... somebody... help me..."

The red haze clouding my vision gradually faded to black.

Just before I lost consciousness, I saw someone smash through the car window.

"Ma'am, wake up! We need a family member to sign off on your surgery!"

Through the fog, I vaguely heard one of the medical staff call Ryan.

The moment they mentioned my name, he cut them off impatiently.

"I'm busy right now."

Then he hung up.

The dead tone rang in my ears, and everything went black.

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed with layer after layer of gauze wrapped around my face.

A dull stinging sensation made me instinctively reach for the bandages, but a nurse rushed in and stopped me.

"Don't touch them! You just had extensive cosmetic surgery on your entire face. You need to keep it protected from the light."

Cosmetic surgery?

On my entire face?

A chill shot down my spine.

"What do you mean, cosmetic surgery on my entire face?"

Panic took over. Ignoring the nurse, I tore the bandages off.

The moment I saw myself in the mirror, I froze.

My face was so swollen and distorted that I barely recognized the woman staring back at me. My eyelids had been surgically altered to make my eyes unnaturally wide. The tip of my nose had been broadened, and my lips had been made thicker.

Someone had deliberately changed my entire face.

I couldn't hold back any longer.

"I was cut by broken glass! All I needed was for my wounds to be cleaned and bandaged. Who gave you permission to operate on my entire face?!"

"I did."

The door swung open.

Ryan stood there, completely calm, his eyes cold and indifferent.

"I authorized it."

My fingers clenched around the blanket so tightly I nearly tore it.

Ryan Holt.

It had been Ryan Holt.

"Winnie has a scar on her face," he said, looking at me evenly and emphasizing every word. "If it weren't for you, she never would've been hurt in the first place. And if you and my mother hadn't kept her out of the hospital, her treatment wouldn't have been delayed, and she wouldn't have that scar now."

His voice remained cold.

"You did something wrong, so now you have to face the consequences."

He stepped closer, grabbed my chin, and forced my face upward. Something vicious flashed through his eyes.

"Tomorrow is Winnie's birthday.

"Your face is my early birthday present to her."

His grip tightened until it felt as though he might crush my jaw. Tears streamed from my eyes from the pain, but all I could feel was hatred.

I sank my teeth into his wrist as hard as I could.

"Let go!"

Ryan recoiled in pain. His gaze lingered on the tears running down my face, and for a moment, his expression turned complicated.

"You..."

I didn't give him the chance to finish.

I grabbed the phone beside me and called 911.

"Hello. I need to report a crime.

"Someone had extensive cosmetic surgery performed on me without my consent."

Ryan's face changed instantly. He reached over and ended the call, his teeth clenched in fury.

"Shay Moore, have you lost your mind? You're really going to make a mountain out of a molehill over something this minor?

"You and Winnie aren't the same. She's young, unmarried, and she cares about her appearance. One scar on her face could change her entire future."

Then his voice turned mocking.

"But you?

"Haven't you already decided you're going to cling to me for the rest of your life? No matter how ugly you become, I'll still take you."

I spat straight at him.

"Get over yourself, Ryan. What makes you so sure I'll never leave you?"

I picked up my phone, opened the divorce confirmation my lawyer had sent me, and shoved the screen right in front of his face.

From that day on, Ryan seemed to disappear from my life completely. That didn't surprise me. He cared too much about appearances, and after I'd thrown him out of my shop so bluntly, there was no way his pride would let him come back. What I didn't expect was that the next time I heard anything about him, it would be from Elizabeth.Elizabeth and I hadn't spoken in a long time, so when I saw her familiar figure outside my shop, I stood there stunned for a moment. Our families had been close for generations, and she had always treated me well. There was no way I could simply pretend I hadn't seen her.I hurried over."Mrs. Holt, what are you doing here?"A rueful smile appeared on her face."Shay, why are you being so formal with me now? Even if things are over between you and Ryan, I've always thought of you as a daughter."I pressed my lips together for a moment."Elizabeth."She smiled, but tears immediately gathered in her eyes.I brought her inside and set one of my homemade dessert

I poured Ryan a glass of warm water. He held the glass between both hands, looking hesitant. Several moments passed, and he still didn't say anything.Eventually, I spoke first."You're not here to ask me where Winnie is, are you?"I haven't had any contact with her in a long time, and after everything that's happened, I'm certainly not going to do anything to her because of you. "So if you're here hoping I'll tell you where she went, you've come to the wrong person."Surprise flickered across Ryan's face.Apparently, he hadn't expected that to be the first thing on my mind. His hand tightened around the glass, trembling slightly."Shay, you've got the wrong idea. I don't think you had anything to do with it."I saw Winnie when she left."Ryan closed his eyes, and a faint, bitter smile touched his lips."I asked her why she was leaving. She shoved me to the ground and told me that if I wasn't going to leave her any money when I died, then why should she waste her time taking care of a

The next day, my dessert shop officially opened for business. We weren't exactly flooded with customers on the first day. Most of the people who came in were friends or friends of friends.I did receive plenty of congratulatory flower arrangements, though, including one surprisingly expensive one from Ryan.My best friend, Claire Bennett, stared at it with a complicated expression."So this is really it between you two? You're actually done with him for good?"Shay, you loved Ryan so much. Are you really able to let him go?"He's marrying another woman next Tuesday."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. She had known me for years and understood better than almost anyone how much Ryan and I had been through together. She'd once told me, "If you two ever break up, I'm never believing in love again."When Ryan's affair first came to light, she'd been even more shocked than I was."Are you sure there's not some kind of mistake?"She probably never thought she'd see the day I truly

The two weeks before the court hearing passed in a blur as I threw myself into getting my dessert shop ready.I'd loved baking since high school, but Ryan never had much of a sweet tooth and rarely bothered to taste anything I made. After years of that, even I'd started to believe I simply wasn't very good at it.It wasn't until I moved out and rented a small apartment of my own that I started baking again. I gave some of my desserts to the neighbors, and the response was so positive that, for the first time, I seriously considered opening a shop of my own.The storefront I found was small and tucked deep inside a side street, with a coffee shop right next door.Unfortunately, the coffee shop was barely hanging on. From what I'd heard, it probably wouldn't survive much longer. When the owner found out I was planning to open next door, she even tried to talk me out of it."If you can still change locations, do it now. Seriously. There's almost no foot traffic here. On a good day, we're

Shay's POVI didn't have to wait long before I saw Ryan again. Before I left, my attorney told me, "The mediation is mostly a formality. If you'd rather not attend, I can handle it for you."I thought about it for a long time before deciding to go."If nothing else, it'll be a proper goodbye to that part of my life."When I arrived at the mediation room, I saw Ryan for the first time in what felt like forever. He wasn't in a wheelchair. Instead, he came in slowly with Winnie supporting him.I looked up calmly and met his eyes, then gave a slight nod toward the chair across from me."Sit."Ryan's gaze stayed fixed on me. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his expression complicated."It's been a while."He sat down across from me, with Winnie pressed close to his side. She watched me warily. "Ms. Moore, I suggest you don't try anything. No matter what happens, I'm staying by Ryan's side."A trace of mockery flashed through my eyes.Would she still say that if Ryan really walked awa

"Leave with nothing?"The words stopped Ryan cold. A violent coughing fit seized him, and a flush rose over his otherwise pale face."You..." His voice came out rough and strained. "Are you joking?"He couldn't believe it. Shay hadn't just divorced him. She wanted him to leave the marriage with nothing. For the first time, panic overwhelmed every other emotion. He hated the feeling of losing control, and with nowhere else to direct it, he slammed his fist into the headboard. The skin across his knuckles split open. The court mediator's stern voice came through the phone. "Mr. Holt, I'm a mediator with the court. This isn't something I would joke about."If you have no objection, please come to the courthouse tomorrow at three for mediation."Ryan's lips trembled, but no words came out."Mr. Holt? Are you still there?"In the end, Winnie took the phone from his hand."Hello, I'm Ryan Holt's girlfriend. I'll bring him tomorrow."After hanging up, she took Ryan's hand and spoke with a hin
