Chapter 3

Penulis: Tranquil Phoenix
After returning to her room, Claire couldn't sleep. The sounds from the next room—Iris's unrestrained moans—kept her awake all night.

She had no idea Calvin was capable of such intensity. Even when she had tried everything she could, he had never touched her.

The next morning, Claire washed up and went downstairs. She saw Calvin in the kitchen, apron on, cooking. Iris hovered by his side, feeding him oranges and wiping his sweat.

Watching them, her chest ached without warning.

Since moving in, Claire had prepared every meal for him. Calvin could cook, yet on her birthday, he hadn't even served her something simple. But for Iris, his obsessive cleanliness apparently didn't matter—he was willing to cook.

Claire lingered at the top of the stairs, frozen, until her phone rang.

"Grandpa George," she answered.

"Claire, with the wedding approaching, I'll transfer some money to you so you can buy anything you need for the wedding."

"But I only want to buy a wedding dress…"

Before she could finish, her phone pinged again.

"Ten million dollars has been deposited into your account."

Claire froze. She hadn't expected George to be so generous.

"Thank you, Grandpa George," she said, hanging up.

She prepared to leave the villa.

"Claire, Calvin made breakfast. Want to eat together?" Iris saw her and smiled, inviting her.

Calvin's voice was cold. "If you want to eat, come sit."

Claire ignored them and stepped out.

At the bridal shop, she began searching for a dress she liked. Just as she picked out one that seemed suitable, she ran into Calvin, Iris, and his group of friends.

Calvin's face darkened at the sight of her.

"What are you doing here?"

Before Claire could answer, his friends started chattering.

"Calvin, didn't Claire say she wanted to cancel the engagement? Why is she here picking out a wedding dress?"

"Do you really believe what she says? She's been after Calvin for years. She's finally getting married—there's no way she'd cancel now."

"Maybe she's here secretly because she knew you'd be taking wedding photos with Iris today."

Claire suddenly understood. Calvin was accompanying Iris for wedding photos.

She almost laughed.

A month before the wedding, she had begged Calvin to take a wedding photo session with her—but he refused, mocking her. He had said if she wanted photos, she should Photoshop them herself. He would never take them with her.

And now here he was, taking Iris for wedding photos.

"Claire, don't misunderstand. I've never taken wedding photos before. Calvin just said we should do it for a keepsake," Iris explained, taking Claire's hand. "Don't worry, Claire, I won't ruin your wedding."

Her words were humble, but Calvin pulled her into his arms.

"No need to ask her. I promised you: I'll only ever take wedding photos with you. Even if I marry her, I won't take a single photo with her."

His words stabbed Claire like a knife to the heart.

She should have hurt. Instead, she lowered her head and smiled.

"You two can take as many photos as you want. It has nothing to do with me."

She turned to a shop assistant. "I'll take this dress. Wrap it up for me."

"Calvin, what if I like this dress too?" Iris asked.

Without hesitation, Calvin handed a card to the clerk. "Charge it."

"Calvin, I saw it first!" Claire frowned, her face darkening. Why did Iris have to snatch everything she liked? Even the wedding dress?

"Claire, are you deliberately making Iris unhappy? I've already said I'll marry you. Iris just wants some wedding photos—isn't that enough?"

"She can take all the photos she wants. Calvin, I'll say it again: I won't marry you!"

"Really?"

Iris could hardly believe it.

Claire sneered. "Yes. I'll let you have your match—illegitimate son and illegitimate daughter, you're both made for each other."

"You! Shut up!" Calvin raised his hand, aiming for a slap.

Claire's gaze froze, icy. "Go ahead. If you have the guts, hit me."

"I don't hit women," he said.

"Really? You missed your chance today. Hope you don't regret it."

With that, Claire turned and walked away, leaving everyone speechless.

"Was she serious?"

"Of course not. Otherwise, why come here to pick a wedding dress? She still wants to marry Calvin."

"Calvin, shouldn't you call to check?"

Calvin frowned and called the family estate. The butler answered.

"Gregory, is the engagement between the Bennett and Aniston families still on?"

"Yes, Sir. Of course, it's on. Your grandfather has arranged everything. All that's left is bringing Miss Aniston here on the day."

"Hmph." Calvin hung up. "Just as I thought. She lied. She's loved me for so many years… Now that she's finally about to marry me, there's no way she'd cancel the engagement."

Iris clung to him. "It's okay, Calvin. I'm happy to take the photos. Nothing else matters."

"Let's finish these photos quickly, before Claire comes back and causes trouble."

His friends urged them on. It took the entire day to finish all the shots.

Due to lack of oxygen, Iris could barely breathe."Calvin—help—"But no matter how she screamed, no one heard her.Soon, she died in agonizing pain.Calvin frantically restarted the machines, tears streaming down his face."No! Honey, don't die! Iris! Wake up!"Hearing the commotion, the doctor rushed in to save her. But it was too late—Iris was gone."I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett. We did everything we could."Calvin slumped against the wall, numb. "How… how could this happen? How…""Accept it," the doctor said gently, patting his shoulder as the staff recorded Iris's time of death.Once the doctor left, Calvin regained a cold composure. He pulled out his phone and dialed Claire."Claire… Iris is dead.""What?"Claire gripped her phone, stunned, her mind racing. She hadn't even had the chance for revenge yet. How could Iris die just like that?"Don't worry. She died painfully. Claire… I might never see you again, but I'll miss you."He hung up and left the hospital. At home,

Just as they reached the hospital ward, Claire saw Calvin sitting on the floor outside the door.He hadn't even changed his clothes. His entire body was smeared with blood, his appearance utterly disheveled. The moment he saw Claire, the dullness in his eyes suddenly lit up."Claire, you're here. You heard I was hurt, so you came to see me, didn't you?"He lunged forward and grabbed her hand, but Claire pulled away coldly."I'm here for Iris, not for you.""For Iris?"Calvin's face filled with regret. "I'm sorry, Claire. I didn't know she would go looking for Uncle Jordan last night. If I had known, I would've stopped her. You know I never wanted you to get hurt. This is all my fault—if it weren't for me—""That's enough!" The anger she'd been holding back finally exploded. "Calvin, shut up! Don't think the whole world revolves around you! I don't want to hear anything about you ever again! I'm here today because your wife murdered my parents. I will never let her go!""What?"

Claire didn't sleep at all that night. Her mind replayed the scene of her parents' deaths over and over again. That year, when she rushed to the accident site, she saw her parents trapped inside the crushed car, unable to get out, already unconscious. Just as she was about to run forward and save them, the vehicle suddenly exploded.Nothing was left. For so many years, that moment had haunted her like a nightmare. She had always believed it was nothing more than a tragic accident.Knowing she was in low spirits, Jordan cooked breakfast for her himself. When Claire came downstairs, he was wearing an apron, carefully setting a bowl of chicken soup on the table. Seeing her, he waved her over."Claire, come have some soup."For some reason, the sight of him made her want to cry."You know how to cook?""I learned from a chef," he said casually. "I know your stomach isn't good.""How did you know?" she asked, confused. Even Calvin had never noticed."There's nothing in this world

"I should be asking you—what are you doing here in the middle of the night?"Calvin was furious. Yet, once inside, his attention drifted helplessly toward Claire. He missed her—desperately. In the past, she had shadowed his every step. Her presence had filled the house, her touch in every corner. Now, the place felt hollow, stripped bare, as if she had never existed at all."Can't a person take a wrong turn?" Iris snapped. How could she admit she had come here to seduce Jordan—and failed? She had gambled for everything and ended up with nothing but utter humiliation."Show Calvin the security footage," Jordan said coolly.A servant immediately presented the recording. The moment Calvin watched it, his expression shifted completely. He turned and stared at Iris in pure disbelief."Have you lost all sense of shame?" he roared. "You actually came here to seduce my uncle? Iris, have you lost your mind? You're my wife now!""So what if I'm your wife?" she shot back. "Does being ma

Jordan shot Iris a single, glacial look, and she flinched, instantly letting go of him."Ah! You're so fierce!" she squealed."What exactly do you want?" Jordan asked, his voice like ice."You tell me," Iris replied, her fingers slowly moving to unbutton her dress. "I just want… a night with you, Jordan." Her voice was thick with brazen audacity. From the balcony upstairs, Claire's eyes widened as she watched the scene unfold. She had never imagined Iris could stoop this low. Stealing her fiancé had been bold enough—but now she dared to seduce her husband? And on the very night her own marriage to Calvin had just been registered? The sheer nerve was staggering."If that's all you came for… get out," Jordan said, rising to leave."Wait! Don't go!" Iris cried, stepping forward. "I really do have something to tell you about Claire! Don't you want to know how her parents died?"Claire's grip tightened on the balcony railing. Her parents… how did they die? Weren't they killed in a c

"You… I'll strangle you, I swear!" Calvin yelled."Go ahead, strangle me! Kill me, and you'll end up in prison! I don't think you'll ever climb out of that hole!"The two of them argued viciously, voices rising, faces flushed with rage. But the driver's calm, measured tone cut through their chaos."Mr. Bennett, I advise you to cooperate. You know Master George's temper—and Master Jordan's. If you don't register with Miss Iris as instructed, I can't imagine what the consequences will be."Hearing this, both of them gradually fell silent.Calvin feared Jordan because he'd seen his methods firsthand. One of Jordan's former subordinates had once stolen confidential company files—and had been made to disappear for days, reemerging barely recognizable. Calvin had no desire to share that fate, so he had no choice but to comply."Iris," he said, his voice tight with suppressed anger. "If you want to live, just cooperate and register with me. Isn't this what you always wanted? To marry me
