Lyra’s POV

The next morning arrived like a slow bruise, its pain spreading through my chest—faint at first, then steadily spreading.

I barely slept. When I did, it was dreamless, the kind of sleep that leaves you more tired than before.

Across the room, Saana’s bed was empty again. But her boots were by the frame this time, and her nightrobe folded neatly on her trunk. A gesture of her presence. Or something of the sort.

I didn’t know what it meant anymore.

Outside, the palace stirred to life

Freya’s POV“I said I’m fine,” I repeated, softer this time. She hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded slowly. But I could see the suspicion, the questions crowding her mind, and the growing distance. I turned away before she could read more meaning into my facial expressions.“I need to handle something in the lower quarters,” I said. “I’ll be back very soon.”“Again?” she asked quietly, like the thought of it was already irritating her. Guilt stabbed through me as I tried to pretend all was well.“I won’t be long,” I said, avoiding her gaze, as that would have a way of exposing me.“Freya,” she called before I could leave.I paused in my tracks, waiting to hear what she would say.“If something is wrong…” she said softly, “you’ll tell me everything, right?”My chest started heaving painfully.“I will,” I lied just to get away from her. Then I walked out before she could ask me anything.“Ethan,” I called as I spotted him near the training grounds. He turned, completely surprised.

Freya’s POV“Why were you crying?”Lyra’s red eyes lifted to meet mine, they were swollen from a night that clearly hadn’t given her rest. She sat on the edge of her bed, fingers clenched tightly into the sheets as if they were the only thing holding her together from tearing apart.“I wasn’t crying,” she said quickly, wiping her eyes.I raised a brow, wondering if she took me for a fool. “Lyra...”“I said I wasn’t crying,” she repeated, more firmly this time, even though her voice was literally shaking.I kept quiet, thinking thoroughly about my next words. I exhaled slowly, stepping closer. “Fine. You weren’t crying,” I murmured with a smile. “You just… decided to stare at the wall all night and forget how to blink, right?”Her lips twitched slightly at my little joke, but the sadness didn’t leave her eyes.“Freya…” she whispered, “do you think I’m foolish?”The question caught me off guard, as I wasn't expecting that.“No,” I said immediately. She let out a shaky breath that she ha

Lyra’s POV“And why is that?” he asked.I held his gaze for the longest time, trying to see through him. “Because you’re hiding something from me.”“You’re beginning to imagine things.”“No,” I said quietly, sure of what I’d seen. “I’m noticing things that shouldn’t be there in the first place.”His eyes narrowed slowly for a second.“What things are you talking about?”I hesitated, contemplating how to present it. Suddenly, Freya’s earlier words echoed in my mind.“Watch. Listen. The danger you seek is in the shadows.”That made my pulse quicken.“You avoid looking at me,” I said slowly. “You’re always somewhere else when I’m with you. Always distracted. And when I speak, it’s like you’re only half there most of the time.” He didn’t respond, just kept quiet. So I stepped closer to draw his attention. “And Seraphina,” I added. The moment I said her name, it did what my entire speech couldn’t. His body went rigid, and I knew there was more to it than he was saying.“You haven’t punishe

Lyra’s POV“Why didn’t you do anything till this moment?”Kieran didn’t move or say anything immediately. It was more like he was buying time to figure out how to reply to my question without letting on that something wasn't right since he returned. He stood quietly by the window, his back to me. But the morning light aided in carving his tall frame into something very distant… and unreachable.“Lyra,” he said finally, his voice coming out very low, yet controlled. “This isn’t something you just jump into without making inquiries.”“How you really making inquiries?” I let out a small laugh—which was humourless, by the way. “And this isn’t how you treat someone you call your Luna.”That got his attention as I wanted it to. He turned slowly to face me, his eyes locking onto mine too deeply, and for a second... I saw something that made my heart leap.I was sure it wasn't anger, but something much heavier.“What exactly are you talking about?” he asked softly. That made my chest tighten

Lyra's POV“I mean… I admit there seem to be things about him you may not understand right now,” she said finally, her voice low but heavy with truths she refused to discuss. “And right now, revealing them to you especially now might change everything between us, and even with him.”“Change everything? Freya… are you in any way saying he’s…” I stopped myself, my heart pounding uncontrollably. “Are you saying he might not be as trustworthy as I always consider him to be?”She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a brief moment as I watched her. “I can’t say that for sure. But all I can say is… you must be careful. Observe keenly from a distance. Listen. Watch for what isn’t said, for what’s in the shadows. That’s exactly where danger hides without anyone suspecting.”“Then give me the chance to be truly careful. Let me watch. Don’t keep me out of this, Freya. I can’t… I can’t stand being blind anymore.”Her eyes opened slowly, carefully study

Lyra’s POV“Freya,” I called cautiously, stepping closer as she organized the trays in the kitchen. “Can I ask you something?”She looked up quickly, her eyes guarded, her hands pausing mid-motion. “Of course. Go ahead,” she said, her voice steady—but something in it made me tense.“It’s about Seraphina,” I said, lowering my voice, unsure how to phrase it without sounding accusatory. “I’ve noticed some things, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t stop thinking about it.”Her eyebrows knitted together slightly, concern flickering across her face. “Not everything you see is what it seems, Lyra,” she said, picking up a tray with deliberate calm and avoiding my gaze.“But it doesn’t feel like that to me,” I pressed, stepping closer. “She’s always around these days. I see traces of her—even her choking perfume, people are whispering out of place. And every time you’re near me, you seem different. Mostly very nervous.”Freya stiffened, but she didn’t turn to face me. “I’m just careful, tha
